T-Mobile and Nortel Networks tests high speed wireless internet services T-Mobile and Nortel Networks have said that they have successfully tested a new high-speed wireless technology which would make them as fast as fixed line wireless internet. They tested the technology in a car which was driven at an average speed of around 70 kmph while keeping it in range of three cell sites on a highway in Bonn, Germany. They managed to achieve a data transfer speed of up to 170 Mbit/s for downloads and up to 50 Mbit/s for uploads. This is much faster than current generation wireless internet services available in the market today. They aim to take a decision within the next six months whether they would be upgrading their Networks to this new technology. Telecom equipment vendor, Nortel Networks, has won a contract to provide Bell Canada Enterprises with high-speed optical networking gear for its broadband services. Nortel’s adaptive optical technology is capable of transmitting data at 40-Gbps, or four times faster than most state-of-the-art broadband Networks. While 10-Gbps technology is enough bandwidth to simultaneously transmit about 1,000 channels of high-definition video over a single optical fiber, even it is beginning to prove insufficient as demand surges for internet-based video services. Bell Canada will use Nortel’s technology to speed up traffic between Toronto and Montreal, Toronto and Chicago, and Montreal and New York. Financial details of the contract were not disclosed. ...
