Thomas E. Gorman is proud to announce his candidacy for Norfolk County Commissioner. Gorman, who has served as a Town Meeting representative in Dedham for the past 26 years, is running with the sole purpose of abolishing Norfolk County government. “At one time, county government played an important role in providing critical services for a number of small communities,” said Gorman. “But those days have long since past. The reality is that county government, as currently constituted, is now a non-essential bureaucracy that costs our communities millions of dollars a year to operate.” The 28 cities and towns that make up Norfolk County last year paid $4.5 million in scarce tax dollars to support the county’s administrative operations. The only notable service provided to the towns for that money was access to a handful of traffic engineers, and a bulk purchasing collaborative. Norfolk County is one of just five Massachusetts counties that still retain this vestigial form of government. Middlesex, Essex, Hampshire and Worcester counties were among those abolished in 1997 as part of a widespread government reform package pushed by then-Gov. William Weld and the Legislature. If elected, Gorman will work towards the elimination of the Norfolk County Board of Commissioners and its administrative staff. This isn't a surprise since Darren Rumble talked about it last week, but Rumble was officially introduced as Norfolk's coach and Alan May as his assistant. Mike Butters also was named general manager. Here is the announcement from the team: "Mike Butters is a lifetime hockey man with extended experience as a player, manager and owner," Lightning vice president of hockey operations Brian Lawton said. "He is a meticulous evaluator of talent and his knowledge of the game will prove to be a valuable asset for the Admirals as we try to return them to the top of the standings. The Helena Independent Record is reporting Mike Butters, part-owner of the Helena Bighorns Junior A Tier III hockey team, will be introduced as the AHL Norfolk Admirals' new general manager. The Bighorns are also owned by Oren Koules, who runs OK Hockey - owners of the Tampa Bay Lightning. The newspaper describes Butters as "energetic and often boisterous," which would seem to fall in line with the rest of the new Lightning organizational ownership, which includes real estate magnate and former NHLer Len Barrie. Damian Cristodero of the St. Pete Times reports in his blog that former Lightning Darren Rumble will be named AHL Norfolk's next head coach on Tuesday. Rumble was an assistant under Steve Stirling last year for Norfolk, but did not have his contract renewed at the end of the season. Stirling was reassigned to an NCAA scouting position by the Lightning following the season but later left the organization to coach in Germany. Rumble played 24 games for the Bolts from 2002-2004, registering 8 penalty minutes in limited duty as a defenseman. He was a member of Tampa Bay's 2004 Cup team.
