When it goes down all over downtown Reykjavik October 15-19, the Iceland Airwaves festival will have finally entered the double digits. Yep, the Nordic fest juggernaut is 10, and to celebrate, they're having a party! Coincidentally enough, it, too, is called Iceland Airwaves, and you're invited! Should you care to attend, you'll join fellow early RSVPers like CSS, Simian Mobile Disco, Junior Boys, Dirty Projectors, Crystal Castles, Final Fantasy, Handsome Furs, These New Puritans, Familjen, Stars Like Fleas, Miracle Fortress, GusGus, the Young Knives, Florence and the Machine, Planningtorock, and Ghostigital. And, if it's anything like my tenth birthday, one and all will join in a rousing Game of Street Fighter II . Not bad! ...

First place in the "let's think about skiing contest," for the summer of 2008, goes to Mary Eloranta , head coach of the fledgling Peak Nordic Ski Club that trains out at Lapham Peak , in the Town of Delafield. Eloranta was the first to hit my inbox with a ski-related note when she passed along an announcement about informational meetings for prospective Peak team skiers. The first session is Sept. 22, at 7 p.m., in the Evergreen Shelter at the Lapham recreation area. The next session will be in the same place on Oct. 20. More details are available here. Peak Nordic has evolved from the Waukesha West Ski Team and extends the opportunity to ski competitively to high school and middle school students throughout the area. The team will train five nights a week and compete throughout the season, ending with the State Championships in Minocqua. Similar teams combining athletes from various schools are the core of the high school racing in Wisconsin. For the 2008-'09, Peak Nordic also formalized the program for youngsters in kindergarten through 6th grade. Directed by Roy Nilsen, the youths will ski on Sunday afternoons, learning more then competing. "The main thing is to get the kids together to have fun on skis," Nilsen said in an interview last winter, as the program started. "We'll incorporate instruction and drills in Game formats." The overriding goal behind moving the ski team out of a single high school and adding the youth progr ...

(1 vote - 1 comment - 71 views) From the Game developer's about page: "Dark Room Sex Game is an award-winning multiplayer, erotic rhythm Game without any visuals, played only by audio and haptic cues. The Game can be played with Nintendo Wiimote controllers or a keyboard. Dark Room Sex Game began its sordid life as a project for the 2008 Nordic Game Jam. The Nordic Game Jam is an annual event held at the IT University of Copenhagen that brings students and professionals together to prototype experimental games over the course of only one weekend. This year, the theme was “Taboo”. In Dark Room Sex Game, the player works with his or her partner to find a mutual rhythm, then speeds up gradually until climax. In four-player “orgy” mode, players swap partners randomly and compete to reach orgasm the fastest. When we realized the phallic and rumbling possibilities of the Wiimote controller, we felt oddly compelled to finish the Game. Our idea was that a sex Game would in fact be even more erotic if one stripped away all visuals and forced players to use their imaginations. Our hope was to use a combination of humor and embarrassment to make players uncomfortable, yet strangely satisfied. One could view the Game as a commentary on the dull fixation on visuals in the spheres of sex and also videogames. Or, you can just view it as a cool party Game." There are nods to the Nordic nature of Minnesota's nickname all over the play. A horn sounds whenever groups of Vikings players run through the tunnel from the locker room and enter the field during pre-Game warmups. There is an inflatable ship that is in place when the team runs onto the field. And then there's Ragnar, the wild-haired fur-clad Viking mascot, who led the team onto the field while riding a purple and gold Harley Davidson. That's what the great Nordic warriors rode around town on for their pillage and plundering, right? Garishly colored choppers? I didn't think I would ever see anything as dumb as Oregon's Donald Duck-looking mascot driven onto the field at Autzen Stadium aboard a motorcycle. I was wrong. A Viking riding a Harley is dumber. Or would that be more dumb? ...

[In an in-depth opinion piece, Game designer and researcher Douglas Wilson urges more collaborative approaches to Game design, suggesting that "the 'auteur' school of Game development is not only outmoded, but dangerous to the vitality of the medium".] As I see it, indie Game culture faced a major crossroads at the 2008 Nordic Game Jam . The biggest event of its kind, the Nordic Game Jam brings professionals, students, academes, and enthusiasts together at IT University of Copenhagen for a frenzied weekend of experimental Game development. At a Game jam, the operating principle is deep and messy collaboration. People pitch and trade their ideas, then coalesce into small teams. The more diverse the team, the better – different skill sets, ages, nationalities, you name it. It's precisely this collaborative spirit that made the keynote speech seem so, well, out-of-place. After a relatively harmless speech, the speaker, an acclaimed indie Game designer, launched into a curious Q&A. Asked how he motivated himself to work largely alone, the speaker bluntly stated, “I don’t like team dynamics very much.” His justification was one of artistic control: “My goal is to express things that are very intimate and personal.” Indeed, the speaker went as far as to suggest that sharing the Game vision is a secondary option for developers who aren’t fortunate enough to have the resources to work alone or control their own team. Suffice to say, this is no ...

On my to do list is to find joyful exercise. To sweat with dignity. To tone and firm and be ludicrously fit. My progress report: ….is in progress. I can talk myself out of virtually anything. Including exercising. It’s not for lack of trying. It’s just…I haven’t found My Perfect Exercise yet. My husband is an avid squash player and gets regular workouts without thinking of them as workouts. He’s got: a Game he loves, a skill he’s perfecting, and a night out with his friends all in one. I want that. My quest for The Perfect Exercise goes way back to the days of The Twenty Minute Workout - remember that? Bess Motta, lip gloss and absurdly large hair? That worked for a while until I felt like I was training to be an extra in a porn flick. Once I had that image in my mind, there was no way I was going to do “…just three more…(breathe)…and two more…(pout seductively)…aaaaand one more…”. I just couldn’t do it and not laugh. Mind you, laughing one’s ass off would be My Perfect Workout if I could actually laugh my ass off. The next thing I tried was skiing. I approached the slope with nothing less than abject terror. It didn’t get any better. So I ditched the skis and took the poles and tried to get into Nordic Walking . I was overcome with self-consciousness because one too many people commented on the fact that the slopes were “over there”. Ha. Next stop: The New York City Ballet workout. I was psyched. It was classical, it was beautiful, the ...
