Filed under: handsets , Nokia , Symbian , GSM , HSDPA , UMTS , HSUPA Nokia's latest promotion isn't the most enthralling we've ever seen, but two aspects in particular stand out. First, those fortunate enough to be able to drop €759 ($1,206) on an N96 will be helping the WWF project to save the red pandas in Nepal. Secondly, the Face The Task website designed to highlight the limited edition kit is worth viewing for kicks alone. From what we can gather, 96 well-packaged N96 mobiles will be made available at the aforesaid price, but nothing about the device itself will be special. You will, however, receive a limited edition ash tree box in a raw silk bag along with an 8GB microSD card. Worth it? That's up to you. If the majority of new products and services from wireless carriers and handset manufacturers recently seems to be an answer to something from Apple, it’s probably because it is. Sure, Apple’s iPhone, iPhone 3G, iTunes integration, and AppStore may not be directly responsible for all of the wireless industry’s recent advancements, but Cupertino’s entry in [...] ...

Filed under: handsets , Nokia Nokia isn't dropping many hints with this one, but it's apparently just let out word that it plans to show off two new handsets next Monday, with an actual launch set to follow a week later. Not one to let an opportunity for speculation go unheeded, The Boy Genius Report says it has a hunch that that these may, in fact, be the N79 and N85 , which were recently spotted alongside Nokia's XpressMedia 5800 "Tube" handset but very light on details. That certainly seems as safe a bet as any, and we certainly don't have very long to wait to find out for sure. [Via The Boy Genius Report ] Read  |  Permalink  |  Email this  |  Comments ...

So says this ET story, citing talks that Airtel is having with handset players such as Nokia...Airtel Live, the mobile VAs app, may be embedded in Nokia ( NYSE: NOK ), and irrespective of whether users are on Airtel network or not. "The icon will be available in all handsets and hence will remain inactive if the consumer is not using an Airtel connection. It then also serves as a huge branding tool," Bharti Airtel's chief marketing officer (mobility) Sanjay Gupta told ET . We reported earlier this year that Airtel had tied up with Mobio to launch a separate mobile app, and this seems to be the result of that. Also, the company is launching its mobile social networking service, Airtel Mobile Campus, with the focus on top 10 cities in the country. Services including photo and video sharing, blog, bulk sms, contests and discussion forums. Bharti Airtel's VAS revenue contributes around 10 percent to its turnover, the company said. According to the Nokia global site, the company is about to reveal two new handsets to the world. While pre-launch spy shots aren't uncommon, releasing it slightly early on the company's own website is. The first is the Nokia 3608, a bog-standard flip phone. It packs a 1.3MP camera, and dual inner and outer screens. It does have GPS, which is probably by far the most advanced feature and shows how cheap the chips have become. It also has FM radio capabilities as well as a MicroSD slot for cards up to 4GB. The other slide The 8208 is a dual slider, in the same vein as the N96, but more feature light. Non-3G toting, it again is in the mid-to-low range of phones, but still manages dedicated music keys, and 20 hours of playback time on a charge. A 3,5mm jack is included for your headphones as well as GPS, a 3MP camera and other treats like FM radio. No word on the important stuff, like pricing or release dates, but you'll know when we do! ...

The timing of Nokia is impeccable, since I just wrote up something about Exchange for iPhones and more. Darla Mack is testing out a related service aptly called Nokia Email . Near as I can tell, this is a hosted email service that offers POP and IMAP for Nokia handhelds. The upside? It will offer the same Direct Push functionality you can find in MobileMe and Microsoft Exchange, so as soon as e-mail arrives on the server, it gets pushed to your handheld. Much like ActiveSync, you can configure a synchronization schedule and even better: you can control the synching behavior when roaming. That's key if you're on the road but don't have a roaming data plan: I'd hate to come home from a trip and find a four-figured bill from my carrier. I also see nice integration between emails and contacts, which although is common sense to have, doesn't often appear in software solutions. Darla is also taking advantage of a nice feature: email folders can be created for local, unsynched storage. If you've got one of these handsets, you might want to sign up for Nokia Email: Nokia E51, E61, E61i, E65, E66, E71, E90, N73, N80, N81 8GB and N95. I've got an N80 lying around here somewhere, so I just may have a look-see. Sign up and other info can be found at http://email.Nokia.com/ I've been trying to hit it for 10 minutes but can't for some reason, so be patient. Now that I mention the N80, I think I still have RoadSync on that handset : it offered D ...

Credit Suisse has cut EPS estimates for both Nokia (NOK) and Motorola (MOT), citing lower than expected demand for handsets, particularly in Europe and China: Based on comments from SEMC Brightpoint and TI we believe that handset volumes are tracking below normal seasonality due to weakness in W. Europe and China, and hence we estimate industry volumes for Q208 to rise by only 1% qoq to 300mn units (+11% yoy). And more concerns that Nokia is getting its clock cleaned by Apple (AAPL) and Research in Motion (RIMM) in smartphones: Our concerns about Nokia due to increasing competition in the smartphone area (especially in H208) remain. Given this and our view that 2009 consensus EPS remains 15% too high, we retain our Neutral rating despite current valuation. Motorola's revenue estimate drops 3% to $7 billion. EPS remains unchanged and rating stays at Underperform. Nokia's revenue and EPS estimates fall to Eu12.4 billion and Eu0.36 respectively and rating remains Neutral. ...
