J.T. O'Sullivan knows he's in for a beating this year, and he doesn't mind. To be at the controls of San Francisco offensive coordinator Mike Martz's high-risk, high-reward schemes, the veteran coach's quarterbacks over the last seven seasons had to absorb more than their share of sacks. Through four games of Martz's first season with the 49ers, O'Sullivan has been dropped a league-leading 19 times. ...

Mike Nolan refers to his version of the nickel defense as the Big Sub. The San Francisco coach's scheme is earning some less-flattering nicknames from fans who don't think the Big Sub is doing much to stop big plays. With four defensive linemen and five defensive backs on the field for large portions of two recent games, the 49ers (2-2) look different from most NFL teams, even if Nolan insists the... ...

From Randy Moss' dynamic 66-yard touchdown catch to Kevin Faulk's score on a direct snap, the New England Patriots returned to their usual regular-season form in an unusual place. Faulk rushed for two scores, Matt Cassel had 259 yards passing and the Patriots won in San Francisco for the first time in franchise history, beating the 49ers 30-21 Sunday. ...

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) -Mike Nolan refers to his version of the nickel defense as the Big Sub. The San Francisco coach's scheme is earning some less-flattering nicknames from fans who don't think the Big Sub is doing much to stop big plays. With four defensive linemen and five defensive backs on the field for large portions of two recent games, the 49ers (2-2) look different from most NFL teams, even if Nolan insists the Big Sub isn't much of a departure from what every other team does to capitalize on matchups. Nolan touts the Big Sub as a way to stop long-gaining plays, with five defensive backs available to blanket the opponents' receivers. With four defensive linemen on the field, Nolan figures, the scheme also should be strong against the run and adept at rushing the passer. ...

There are no changes to the 49ers' injury report. LB Manny Lawson, T Jonas Jennings and CB Shawntae Spencer are still out. As reported yesterday, the 49ers have no plans right now to fill Spencer's spot on the roster because there simply is no void that needs to be filled. The 49ers began the season carrying more defensive backs that normal. When asked yesterday if this was a money issue, Nolan said, "No, not at all." However, the 49ers are also saving money (and salary-cap room) by not filling the roster spot. They're saving anywhere from $17,350 a week (for a rookie or first-year player) to $48,820 a week (for a player with 10-plus years of experience) by not filling the roster spot. * * * LB Tully Banta-Cain's chances of suiting up for Sunday's game against his former team are "better than favorable," Nolan said. With Lawson out, Parys Haralson will start at OLB. Haralson is capable of playing all three downs. When Haralson needs a rest, Banta-Cain is likely to take over. * * * Nolan on the Bill Belichick-Mike Martz matchup: "Both he and Mike, when they go against each other, will try to figure out some little wrinkles to show one another." * * * From the 49ers' PR department . . . The 49ers' offense is 97.2 yards better per game than last season. The last team with that large of an increase (over a full season) was Martz's 121.3 improvement with the 1999 St. Louis Rams. . . . Hello Niner Nation, We're just getting our feet wet here on SBNation, but wanted to give you our take on San Francisco hosting New England this weekend. NE @ SF Our Line: San Francisco by 5 In our review of this week's rankings, we talked about how the bye week should have benefited New England by giving them time to figure out how to get their offense jump started. There is no need to jump start the San Francisco offense, which would be firing on all cylinders if not for some costly turnovers, specifically fumbling the football. We remember how Miami ran all over New England two weeks ago, and so does our system. Regardless of whether or not New England's offense improves, we think that playing at home the San Francisco offense will have an answer when needed and keep their team in front on the scoreboard, even if the game becomes a shootout. ITN Rankings: - New England #10 - San Francisco #20 Another Niner Nation poster picked SF to win but said "don't bet on it!" We actually think this is a very solid bet to make given the odds SF is getting. ...

By Glen Farley In honor of Paul Newman, we recall the words the late actor uttered to The Sundance Kid while cast in the role of Butch Cassidy. “Who are those guys?” Who are these guys who comprise the San Francisco 49ers, the team the New England Patriots will face at Candlestick Park when they return to the playing field at 4:15 this Sunday afternoon? The 2-1 Patriots are in the process of learning that because, in the 2-2 49ers, they will be facing the unknown. “(It’s) a team that we don’t know very well,” Patriots head coach Bill Belichick acknowledged on Monday, “but (one) we’ve got to get to know (them) here in a hurry.” When last they met, the eventual Super Bowl XXXIX champion Patriots topped the 49ers, 21-7, in the 2004 regular-season finale at Gillette Stadium — a game that brought an end to the Dennis Erickson era, a reign that saw the Niners drop 23 of the 32 games they played in the two years that followed Steve Mariucci’s departure. Tom Brady (touchdown passes to Mike Vrabel and Deion Branch) started and Rohan Davey (1-for-4 for 10 yards) finished that game at quarterback for the Patriots, but the story that day was Corey Dillon. With 14 carries for 116 yards and one TD, the running back carved out his ninth 100-yard game of the season. The quarterback for the 49ers that day: Ken Dorsey (19-for-29 for 189 yards and a touchdown); his supporting cast included running back Kevan Barlow (25 carries for 103 yards), wide r ...

Hey folks, this is Fooch from Niners Nation , your friendly SB Nation 49ers blog.  Our sites have begun a fun little idea where the opposition blog will come over and answer questions directly from the fans.  We've traditionally done the 5 questions, but this allows for everybody to get involved and come up with as many questions as they could possibly want answered.  First though, I thought I'd give you a quick rundown on the new and (still TBD on how much) improved 49ers. Offense Add 49ers fans to the growing crowd that finds Mike Martz both incredibly brilliant and incredibly frustrating.  Mike Martz appears to be continuing his magic in turning J.T (John Thomas/Just Touchdowns/Just Turnovers) O'Sullivan into a more than serviceable starting quarterback.  The 49ers offense has been clearly improved from last year, although when you hit rock bottom there usually is nowhere to go but up.  The primary issue most people have with the offense right now is the fact that J.T. O'Sullivan is getting absolutely killed by defensive pressure, as he is currently on pace for a record-tying 76 sacks.  There are 3 reasons for this problem.  First, the Martz offense is prone to a lot of sacks, just ask Jon Kitna.  Second, the offensive line has struggled at times in pass protection.  Third, JTO has shown a consisten ability to hold onto the ball for too long trying to make plays. The primary strength of the offense is the Frank Gore, not exactl ...
