'' The Power of Nightmares '' is a BBC documentary film series, written and produced by Adam Curtis . The series consists of three one-hour films, consisting mostly of a montage of archive footage with Curtis's narration, which were first broadcast in the United Kingdom in late 2004 and have been subsequently aired in multiple countries and shown in several film festivals, including the 2005 Cannes Film Festival . The films compare the rise of the American Neo-Conservative movement and the radical Islamist movement, making comparisons on their origins and noting strong similarities between the two. More controversially, it argues that the threat of radical Islamism as a massive, sinister organised force of destruction, specifically in the form of al-Qaeda , is in fact a myth perpetrated by politicians in many countries—and particularly American Neo-Conservatives—in an attempt to unite and inspire their people following the failure of earlier, more utopian ideologies. ''The Power of Nightmares'' has been praised by film critics in both Britain and the United States . Its message and content have also been the subject of various critiques and criticisms from conservatives and progressives. Gosh not only has Leila written an enormous entry about my last topic, and proposed the new topic that I'll get to soon, but she's forged ahead and written a post on the next topic already. Wow three posts in two days from her, that's fairly impressive. I've deliberately avoided reading her post on the current topic until I complete mine - I'm not quite sure why, perhaps because I won't feel quite as much behind if I write mine before reading hers. Anyhow, let's get into it. There are clearly two distinct parts of this topic: childhood fears and childhood Nightmares. I think, quite fortunately, that for me to two didn't generally coincide particularly often, as it would have been rather horrible. Generally my Nightmares were about stuff that didn't consciously freak me out particularly much in my general life, although obviously they did unnerve my subconscious enough to make it put them into my Nightmares. But anyway, which shall I start with... hmmmm.... how about childhood fears, that's a little more interesting probably. When I look back at things, I was definitely a pretty damn timid child. For years I slept with the light on (or at least went to sleep with the light on), and while I don't remember the age I was when I finally made the transition to going to sleep with the light off, I know that it was probably older than I'd really want to admit to. So obviously 'the dark' freaked me out reasonably much as a kid. But it wasn't j ... Source: www.npr.org --- 8 days ago

The first time I cam face-to-face with a dinosaur I was so scared I ran around the corner and hid, peeking out to see my parents try to reassure me that I would not be gobbled up, impaled, trampled, or otherwise harmed by the roaring robots. I had bugged the hell out of them to go see the animatronic dinosaurs traveling exhibit at the Morris Museum but when I finally got to see them it was too much for me to handle. I don't remember how old I was exactly, probably about five or six, but even though the synthetic creatures were downsized they still towered over me. The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County has done one better, featuring a chubby, fuzzy Tyrannosaurus that waddles the halls. I think it's pretty cool, but at the same time I can't blame some of the children for being upset when confronted with a tyrannosaur smile. Free-roaming dinosaurs that shuffle through the shadowy hallways of museums break one of the "rules" about dinosaurs; they're supposed to be dead. As scary as their skeletons might be when we're young they are just the remains, they don't move and they can't come and get us. Someone in a theropod suit can, though, allowing dinosaurs to step over the gulf of millions of years to smile their toothy smiles. Most of us who are afraid when young grow out of our fear, thinking that the robotic dinosaurs are more silly than scary, but I didn't know that when I thought the anamatronic Tyrannosaurus was fixing ... By VICKY SINAGRA St.AlbansMessenger ST. ALBANS — Maurice Lamothe knows engines. Since 1974, he has operated Lamothe’s Repair Shop on Lower Newton Road in St. Albans, and while he’s seen many changes in the past three decades, nothing has been as alarming as recently introduced gasoline additives, which he says are causing problems in the engines and fuel systems of his customer’s cars and boats. “Three months ago when we opened up the boats from winter, they had bad gas, dirty gas,” he said. Lamothe has also seen the same problem in luxury cars, adding that one BMW owner went through three fuel pumps and gas filters, spending $700 to fix problems Lamothe attributes to gas. “A BMW will not handle dirty gas,” he said. Lamothe said he believes the problem may have something to do with ethanol. According to The Boat Owner’s Association of The United States, many states have mandated the replacement of the gasoline additive MTBE (methyl tertiary-butyl ether) with ethanol. This changeover was part of the 2005 Energy Bill, which also eliminated the requirement for oxygenated gas, the main reason MTBE, a suspected carcinogen and groundwater pollutant, was added in the first place. The bill also required ethanol, made from Midwestern corn, to be gradually added to the nation’s supply of gasoline. A blend of gasoline with ethanol added, called E-10, contains 10 percent ethanol and 90 percent gasoline and is being sold locally. read more ... Source: info.detnews.com --- 5 days ago
