The Anaheim Ducks named four-time Stanley Cup winner Scott Niedermayer their team captain on Tuesday. Defenceman Chris Pronger and centre Ryan Getzlaf have been named alternate captains for the upcoming season, while centre Rob Niedermayer will serve as an additional alternate captain when necessary. “Scotty is a tremendous leader and has been for his entire career,” said Ducks head coach Randy Carlyle. “We have several experienced leaders on this team, and we will need them to work as a group in order for us to have success.” Niedermayer, 35, served as Ducks captain during the 2005-06 and ‘06-07 season. The team then handed the ‘C’ to Pronger for the 2007-08 campaign as Niedermayer contemplated retirement during the first 34 games last season. Niedermayer, who won three Stanley Cups with the New Jersey Devils and a fourth with the Ducks in 2007, has 148 goals and 485 assists for 633 points in 1,101 career NHL games. “It’s an honour to be named team captain,” said Niedermayer, a Norris Trophy winner in 2004 as the NHL’s top defenceman. “We have several great leaders in this locker-room and I’m just happy to be part of that.” — Canwest News Service ...
