#VOICE ONE: This is Shirley Griffith. #VOICE TWO: And this is Steve Ember with the VOA Special English program, Explorations. Today we tell about one of the world's greatest scientists, Isaac Newton. #(MUSIC) #VOICE ONE: Much of today's science of physics is based on Newton's discovery of the three laws of motion and his theory of gravity. Newton also developed one of the most powerful tools of mathematics. It is the method we call calculus. Late in his life, Newton said of his work: "If I saw further than other men, it was because I stood on the shoulders of giants. " #VOICE TWO: One of those giants was the great Italian scientist, Galileo. Galileo died the same year Newton was born. Another of the giants was the Polish scientist Nicholas Copernicus. He lived a hundred years before Newton. Copernicus had begun a scientific revolution. It led to a completely new understanding of how the universe worked. Galileo continued and expanded the work of Copernicus. Isaac Newton built on the ideas of these two scientists and others. He found and proved the answers for which they searched. #(MUSIC) #VOICE ONE: Isaac Newton was born in Woolsthorpe, England, on December twenty-fifth, sixteen forty-two. He was born early. He was a small baby and very weak. No one expected him to survive. But he surprised everyone. He had one of the most powerful minds in history. And he lived until he was eighty-four. Former Middlesex County Register of Probate John Buonomo was indicted yesterday on charges he stole thousands of dollars from copy and money machines at his former office. The Newton resident, who resigned on Sept. 7, was indicted by a Middlesex County grand jury on 12 charges of breaking and entering into a depository with intent to commit larceny, eight counts of theft of public property by a city, town or county officer, and eight counts of larceny of less than $250. Prosecutors say Buonomo, who was elected to register in 2000, repeatedly stole cash and coins from copy and money machines at the office of the Registry of Deeds over a period of several weeks. After the thefts were noticed, video surveillance was installed in the building, and captured Buonomo taking money out of the machines several times during the months of June, July and August, according to the Middlesex District Attorney's office. According to the Registry of Deeds, Buonomo had no authority to access the machines or to remove money from them. Following his arrest in August, Buonomo initially denied taking the money, but later told police he took the cash to purchase office supplies. Buonomo's lawyer, Michael Natola yesterday said the indictment wasn't unexpected. "Our response to is is that this development was completely expected, and the indictment as they have been returned are exactly as I thought they were going to be," he said. "There's no surprises a ... Source: www.kansas.com --- 8 days ago

Construction on the new Newton North High School is on schedule, with the concrete foundation of the $195 million project 56 percent complete. That was the update the Newton Building Commissioner Nick Parnell, along with Mayor David Cohen and Frank Allard of Dimeo Construction, gave to the Board of Aldermen about the high school project during the Sept. 2 board meeting. Parnell also said that the utility work on Elm Street was complete. Parnell acknowledged that noise has been an issue for neighbors and said most of it was coming from “the backup sound of the machinery that back up and smooth out the concrete to different levels of the floor.” “We’re working right now with Dimeo, with Aggregate Industries…to try to expedite this earlier in the day so that this activity goes no later than 8 p.m.,” Parnell said. “We’re going to try to eliminate the beep, beep, beeps.” Pointing out that the city ordinance calls for construction noise to stop at 7 p.m., Alderman George Mansfield asked that the city not violate its own noise ordinance during the construction. Mayor Cohen responded by saying the noise from the Elm Street utility construction fell under the emergency exception guidelines. Alderman Marcia Johnson asked Parnell for “guarantees that people aren’t going to live with that,” adding that with school starting, people can’t have noise late at night. Parnell said that the late-night utility construction on Elm Street involved a gas ... Source: www.starherald.net --- 36 days ago
