Blogs get a lot of the blame for the destruction of the newspaper business. As a form of communication, they are quicker, easier and more effective than Newspapers. This we know. In a Reuters article discussing the decreasing number of newspaper analysts, Robert MacMillan offers another explanation of bloggers on the newspaper world: "In the absence of critical analysis from Wall Street, bloggers and industry executives have grown in importance." In essence, the opinions of the blogsphere take on more importance in the absence of more traditional expert advice. What came first: the lack of advertising or the doom and gloom of the blogosphere? Probably the former, but the latter is increasingly hurting the industry. New Career Opportunities Daily: The best jobs in media ...

The World Association of Newspapers and World Editors Forum have called for the repeal of a punitive "luxury" tax on Newspapers that are imported into Zimbabwe, which is preventing independent Newspapers from reaching their audience. The tax was imposed in early June in the run-up to the widely condemned presidential election won by Robert Mugabe after his opponent quit the race in the face of escalating violence against his supporters. It aims to reduce the influence of South African-based news sources, which have been extremely important to Zimbabweans. "Restricting access to information by punitive taxation constitutes a clear breach of the right to freedom of expression, which is guaranteed by numerous international conventions, including the Universal Declaration of Human Rights," the Paris-based WAN and WEF, which represent 18,000 Newspapers world-wide, said in a letter to President Mugabe. The two organisations called on Mugabe to remove the luxury tax on foreign publications and to end state intimidation of the independent media. All domestic independent Newspapers and broadcasters in Zimbabwe are banned. ...

In June, Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki dropped the publication of government bid requests in national Newspapers. The decision has been a blow to Iraqi papers, particularly independent Arabic-language papers, who receive 40 to 70 percent of their income from government advertising. Although Iraqi papers also receive revenue from sales and private advertising - mainly from mobile phone companies and agencies distributing American political advertising - these sources of income are dwarfed by government spending. This is not the first time papers have been victim to the whims of politics. In December 2005, Prime Minister Ibrahim al-Jaffari ordered ministries not buy advertisements from independent papers, however, the orer was later withdrawn. The new measure by al-Maliki has coincided with the establishment of a new newspaper linked to his Al-Dawa party, Al-Bayan . Source: Menassat ...

Next week I'm leading a discussion at a conference run by the Knight Digital Media center about innovation within Newspapers. The topic of the conference is "Transforming News Organizations for the Digital Now." They've asked me to talk about two things: The "ecology of innovation." What type of environment fosters innovation best? Provide examples of innovation that helps journalists to transform. I have my own thoughts about this, informed by my work in Bakersfield as well as at previous companies. I will share those ideas here soon, in addition to anything that comes out of the panel discussion. But to make sure I convey the best ideas at the conference I want to open this up to the readers of this blog. How would you answer these questions? I'll do my best to bring them up during the discussion -- especially if the audience is quiet. And if nothing else, I expect the discussion here on MediaShift Idea Lab could be illuminating in its own right. I have just one request, though. The purpose is to identify proven ways to create a culture of innovation within news organizations. I realize that some think this is not possible and that the only solution is to leave the newsroom. I respect your opinion, but please keep comments focused on the questions above and asssume that leaving a news organization is not a solution (because in this case, it isn't). You can think of this as a Desert Island exercise. If the newspaper is the Desert ...

Filed under: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle It's a sign of the times: rustling through the trash for recyclable goods to redeem for a few cents is no longer the vocation of the downtrodden. It's gone mainstream. The USA Today reports that a truck full of recyclables can be worth as much as $1,000, with Newspapers worth $600. It's an organized industry featuring fleets of trucks and cell phones looking to take advantage of rising commodity prices. Much of the paper makes its way over to China where it's less plentiful. Some cities have laws against stealing recyclables because they rely on the revenue to fund the collections. But here's what I wonder about, from an economic standpoint: if collecting recyclables is so profitable in thickly-settled areas, why bother with a city-sponsored effort at all? Wouldn't it make more sense to let enterprising individuals collect and sell the "merchandise" on their own, rather than putting a bunch of people on the town's payroll, and then using the police to enforce the monopoly? Certain services need to be handled publicly -- police, fire, etc. -- but does recycling really fit the bill? It makes sense when it's a public good in need of subsidy but when old Newspapers can be sold for big profits, maybe we should just let the market work. Newspapers are making several preparations in anticipation of the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics, trimming staff and putting increased focus on their online operations. The Associated Press will provide Newspapers with a service called Summer Games Plus, made possible by a deal with NBC that allows the AP to publish NBC-produced context. According to New York Times Sports Editor Tom Jolly , the Times will utilize the AP's service "because we wanted the ability to fully cover things like lead-up events, lesser events we might not staff, and mostly agate events."   The Tribune Company 's papers, which include the LA Times , the Chicago Tribune , and the Baltimore Sun , will share reporters to provide the widest range of coverage. The Boston Globe is among the papers sharpening its web coverage. According to sports editor Joe Sullivan , the paper is bringing "a full-time multimedia person...in charge solely of producing products for the Web." The Globe will also bring a Chinese reporter "to help with the language and cultural stuff." MONMOUTH -- Daily Review Atlas Publisher Tony Scott said the difficult economic times facing the country were a large factor in the decision to eliminate the Monday edition of the paper.     While the newspaper industry has been experiencing a crunch, so have most industries. In fact, when Leaders from the Group of Eight economic powers meet starting Monday — between surging oil prices, food inflation and a credit crunch that's depressed global growth — they will be faced with the the gravest combination of economic woes in at least a decade.     Scott said the company, GateHouse Media, has been considering changing the paper from six to five days per week for at least two years. Scott said the aforementioned combination of economic forces made this the right time to make a the move.     Scott has said that, by eliminating the expenses of printing and delivering one day of the paper, the increased costs will not have to be passed onto readers.     The Review Atlas will also continue to work on improving the quality of its daily coverage and the features it offers to readers. Daily Sudoku puzzles will be a regular feature starting Tuesday, and an  expanded weekend edition  will allow readers to continue to rely on the paper for the TV guide and comics they have become accustomed too. The weekend edition will now also include PARADE Magazine.        Readers will also be able to see expanded coverage on the Web site, www.reviewatlas.com. ...
