Headliners such as The Black Crowes and Jimmy Buffett and the Coral Reefer Band aren't exactly the troubadours that once topped the bill, but underneath the bigger ticket sellers was a lineup consisting of talent whose tunes and performances were very much in the vein of the folk Music that launched this fest in the first place. Acts like Stephen Marley & Damian Marley and ukulele virtuoso Jake Shimabukuro aren't exactly playing folk Music, but artists like Kate Taylor (sister of James ), Gillian Welch , Richie Havens and a solo acoustic set by Jim James of My Morning Jacket offered up a modern, 21st Century application of the art form. While we were sweating it out in Grant Park for Lollapalooza this past weekend, friend of the 'Gum and occasional photo contributor Jon Bahr was toughing it out up in Newport, Rhode Island for this year's installment of the annual folk Festival. Well, maybe not toughing it out, exactly. Jon describes the scene: The setting of the Newport Folk Fest couldn't be more picturesque and nearly every artist who played couldn't help but mention the scenery. The 8,000 attendees take over the Fort Adams State Park, whose centerpiece is the Fork was built in 1799 and is the largest coastal fortification in the United States. Surrounding that is the stunning view of the massive Newport Bridge (picture the Verrazano bridge) and hundreds upon hundreds of boats filling the coast, anchored watching the stage/screens, and listening to the Music perfectly with a "Boat Drink in hand. Anchoring the waterfront scene, of course, was a broad sampling of "folk" with everyone from Steve Earle to Gillian Welch, Trey Anastasio to She & Him. THE FELICE BROTHERS ANNOUNCE FALL HEADLINING TOUR WITH A.A. BONDY, DEER TICK The Felice Brothers The Felice Brothers are proud to announce a multi-date Fall headlining tour of the United States. Following their well received appearance at the inaugural Outside Lands Music Festival (read the review here ) in San Francisco's historic Golden Gate Park, they kick off an impressive run in Burlington, VT September 4, and keep on through early November with a show at the world renowned Spiegeltent in New York City. Along the way they will be joined by A.A. Bondy and Deer Tick . Recently signed to Team Love Records, the Catskill Mountain rabble-rousers released their Self-Titled LP this past March 2008 on the NYC based label. No Depression wrote that the "ethereal, guns-and-sex-and-Dust-Bowl-metaphora infused" album could "not be understated." Meanwhile Uncut went on to say, "rowdy, vivid, moving and playful, The Felice Brothers is just glorious." It follows their self-released debut Through These Reins and Gone (2006), and Tonight at the Arizona , put out by Loose Records in the U.K. in 2007. This summer they've kept busy on the road, hitting festivals like Bonnaroo, All Points West, The Newport Folk Festival, Mountain Jam, and Langerado. Though most of the Music world's attention was focused on Grant Park last weekend, there was another, more storied Festival happening on the east coast. The Newport Folk Festival is now in its 49th year; a remarkable achievement considering the number of festivals that have come and gone over the same amount of time. The site of the famed 'electric Dylan' controversy, as Jim James said this year, is like "playing on top of ghosts who are playing on top of ghosts." This year's Festival was dotted with a number of quasi-mainstream musicians and one very mainstream actress. NPR Music , in its infinite wisdom, did something very cool for all of us taking in the different sounds coming out of Chicago last weekend. They recorded a number of the concerts and are streaming them on their site right now. I listened to the Jim James show yesterday to wind down my afternoon and it is another special performance by this growing figure in Music. On top of James, they have a Trey Anastasio solo set and a performance by She & Him . Follow the jump to see what else they have for you. With a total ten concerts from the weekend -- with more to come -- one can really get a feel for what seemed to be a very special two days. NPR does a really nice job with these shows; the sound quality is always very crisp and even. I'll probably take in the Trey show later today.
