MORGANTOWN--In an ideal world, every tight end in the West Virginia University football program would look and act like Will Johnson . After a year as a wide receiver, tight ends coach Doc Holliday encouraged head man Bill Stewart to give the 6-foot-2, 215-pound sophomore a look at tight end ...

We really did belong to a club. There were degrees of membership, of course -- hey, nice asymmetrical haircut! -- but one thing was for certain: if you were lucky enough to have lived through the New-Wave music invasion of the early 1980s, Long Island was the place to be. ...

The Martin Parr article made me think of young photojournalists who are out on their own gathering stories that interest them first, and pitching them second. I've covered a few of these folks, including bright young thangs Matt Lutton and M. Scott Brauer . I thought this would be a good time to highlight some of the work of 25-year-old Mark J. Davis ; I love it when you can get story ideas by looking at someone's pictures--  Here are two groups of photos, one from Chile, one from Romania (and a single from Bolivia), that tell quite a narrative. Warning: castration is involved. Call Mr. Davis, picture editors! He's a bright star! Ok. Chile: Master ship builder Joel Esparza nails down a cross section support in the interior of a ship with the help of his assistants, Caleta Tumbes, Chile. The ship is in repairs and will be amplified, a process that will take many months. The cross sections are boiled in sea water for three hours in order to make them pliable. Fishermen set out from the bay of Caleta El Soldado, Chile.  Seaweed washes ashore together with garbage, such as this lounge chair. Luis Espinoza carries in nets of shellfish after a morning of work, Caleta El Soldado, Chile. The fishermen set out in groups of three to the open sea in small motor boats to gather the shellfish from the sea floor. Typically two divers collect the shellfish while an assistant mans the boat, regulating the air compressor and sorting the product before i ...

Chess is a great game , but do you sometimes find it a little too… static? Wish you could add an extreme component to it? If downhill chess is something you'd like to try, the New Wave Chessboard is the one you want. The 9 x 9-inch board is made of high-quality corrugated cardboard, and each square has laser-cut slit. You insert the flat playing pieces into the slits, and the board holds them there so tightly they can't be knocked out — the pieces only move when you want them to. Theoretically you could play Frisbee while you also play chess. Invented by New York designer Daniel Young, the New Wave board also comes with checkers pieces. You can apparently insert pieces into the slits at least 1,000 times without any reduction in the grip. Besides being durable, it's also cheap, costing just 12 bucks. For that price, why the hell not? Paradoxy Products , via Better Living Through Design ...

The rise of the Internet and downloadable music has made it easy for musicians to get their product heard. Waltham resident Zane Kuchera has jumped on music's technological boom, transforming a nook in his Roseanna Park Drive home into a studio where he runs his own record label. ``I have a project studio. It's not big enough for a full band,'' Kuchera said. ``I do film scoring there as well and I co-write with a bunch of local artists and produce their CDs.'' On his Web site, customers can easily download collections of songs ranging in price from $9.99 to $14.97. Kuchera, 46, a singer, songwriter and record producer, began his musical career as a sound engineering assistant in a recording studio at age 17. He moved to Waltham in January 2000 with his husband and two children, ages 16 and 19. Having been involved in the music industry since his teens, Kuchera said he has noticed tremendous changes in the market while developing Zane Kuchera Records. ``This business, it's changed a lot over the years,'' he said. ``It used to be you solicited to a few publishers and a few would scope you out and things were iffy. Times have changed with the rising use of the personal computer. People are doing studio work at home.'' Kuchera said his home studio was designed with some pointers from his former teachers at the Berklee College of Music, where he pursued a degree in contemporary writing and production in 2004. ``We were able to design ...

Analysts say impact could even worse than the subprime crisis The first Wave of Americans to default on their home mortgages appears to be cresting, but a second, far larger one is quickly building.Homeowners with good credit are falling behind on their payments in growing numbers, even as the problems with mortgages made to people with weak, or subprime, credit are showing their first, tentative signs of leveling off after two years of spiraling defaults. The percentage of mortgages in arrears in the category of loans one rung above subprime, so-called alternative-A mortgages, quadrupled to 12 percent in April from a year earlier. Delinquencies among prime loans, which account for most of the $12 trillion market, doubled to 2.7 percent in that time. The mortgage troubles have been exacerbated by an economy that is still struggling. Reports last week showed another drop in home prices, slower-than-expected economic growth and a huge loss at General Motors. On Friday, the Labor Department reported that the unemployment rate in July climbed to a four-year high. While it is difficult to draw precise parallels among various segments of the mortgage market, the arc of the crisis in subprime loans suggests that the problems in the broader market may not peak for another year or two, analysts said. Defaults are likely to accelerate because many homeowners' monthly payments are rising rapidly. The higher bills come as home prices continue ...
