Massachusetts newspaper The Republican reported yesterday that the Zoning Board with authority over Six Flags New England approved a special permit to allow upgrades to the Superman: Ride of Steel roller coaster. The upgrades will include the addition of fog banks, fire bursts, and audio, according to Melissa Pinkerton, public relations manager for Six Flags. The park opens April 10, 2009 but the upgraded Superman coaster, with the audio and visual enhancements, is scheduled to open Saturday May 23, 2009 during the Memorial Day 2009 weekend. In the early 20th century, Superman exploded into legend as the last son of Krypton. But ensuing series, including DC Comics' recent inter-title crossover Superman: New Krypton, buried his singularity by populating Earth with less honorable Kryptonians. DC's New maxi-series Superman: World of New Krypton, on sale March 4, picks up where Superman: New Krypton left off. Namely, on the planet of Kandor, where Earth's 1000,000 Kryptonians have been transplanted in hopes of averting all-out war. Geoff Johns began the revitalization of Superman in 2008, and this year all of the ground work that he laid last month is finally bearing fruit. Exciting, exciting fruit. Johns spent most of 2008 setting up the New Superman status quo in the New Krypton storyline and now that we (nominally) know the players and where they exist on the chessboard, it’s finally time to start playing. Much like the writing team on the most excellent 52 , Johns is not handling this sprawling Superman tale alone. James Robinson and Greg Rucka have joined Johns and will be handling some of the writing chores. Robinson and Rucka are co-writing this 12 issue mini-series as well as handling their own books, Robinson on Superman and Rucka on Action Comics . Along with Sterling Gates on Supergirl , which has been excellent, and Johns on the year long Superman: Secret Origin (which you just know is going to tie into all of this) what we have here is the makings of a sprawling, intricate, and hopefully compelling year long adventure for the Man of Steel the likes of which we haven’t seen in… hell, I can’t even remember the last time anything this audacious was planned for Superman. All I know is that when I got to the bottom of the final page and it indicated the issues that were coming at us in the upcoming weeks I got really pumped. I wanted to read those issues NOW. For those who like their politics to include meteors and punching, your day has come; Warner Animation have confirmed that their next DC Comics adaptation (following Green Lantern ) will be the ridiculous Superman/Batman: Public Enemies . If you happened to miss the original comic version of the story (which ran in the first six issues of DC's Superman/Batman series, back in 2003, written by former Heroes writer, Jeph Loeb), then here's a basic plot summary, courtesy of Warners: United States President Lex Luthor uses the oncoming trajectory of a kryptonite asteroid to frame Superman and declare a $1 billion bounty on the heads of the Man of Steel and his "partner in crime" Batman. Super heroes and super villains alike launch a relentless pursuit of Superman and Batman, who must unite – and recruit super help – to stave off the action-packed onslaught, stop the asteroid, and uncover Luthor's devious plot to take command of far more than North America. Yes, it's Superman and Batman Versus America - but even that doesn't adequately describe the level of hyperbolic action that the original comic offered; if the animated adaptation can live up to even half of the purposefully stupid thrills and spills of the comic, this just may be the greatest superhero cartoon ever.
