After observing the School Department’s New transportation program for a month, Superintendent Nicholas A. Fischer said department officials are now trying to determine whether any changes are necessary. As the calendar turned from September to October, Fischer said complaints and calls to his office and other staffers in the school district regarding transportation questions have decreased. “Over the last week or two, the number of calls has gone down dramatically,” Fischer said “I view that as a good sign.” For the first time in recent years, the School Department moved away from a transportation system that allowed students to be picked up and dropped off in front of their homes. This year, the department started using a bus Route program with bus stops along designated routes. Fischer said the New system prompted calls regarding just about all aspects of transportation. Among the topics being reviewed, Fischer said is if bus stops are in safe locations, if those stops are being used by enough students to make them viable and whether routes should be consolidated in any manner. Fischer said once those matters are resolved, a determination will be made on requests to pick up children who were not previously receiving transportation to school. “First and foremost is the safety of the students,” Fischer said. Before facing everyday stresses, commuters can now find relief at a New oasis on Route 13 in Smyrna. The coffee is hot and ready to be served at the New Dunkin’ Donuts near the south Smyrna Route 1 interchange in the Gateway North Shopping Center. The store held its grand opening on September 10. Owner and manager Himanshu Shah said ever since he was a hotel and restaurant management student in college he has been interested in opening a Dunkin’ Donuts. Shah owns another Dunkin’ Donuts in Camden, Delaware off of Route 13 next to the Super Wal-Mart. His first Dunkin’ Donuts store, which opened in March of 2005, has a Baskin Robbins on the other side of the store. The New Smyrna store has a 35-person staff. Along with donuts and hot coffee, they also serve ice coffee, muffins, omelets, cookies, and a variety of breakfast sandwiches on a bagel, croissant, or English muffin. The business is open seven days a week from 5 a.m. until 10 p.m. inside the store, while the drive-though is open from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. Shah said he opened Dunkin’ Donuts to give people a more convenient way to get their morning coffee, and he chose this location because of the growth in the area. “It’s easy access,” he said. “We get all the Route 13 traffic. People are coming from Dover going north to work. This is the Route 1 exit. In the summer we will probably get beach traffic. People are coming from Smyrna, Odessa, Felton, and Townsen ...
