This week at TreeHugger: Tesla Motors, makers of fine electric cars, have a announced along with California's Governor that their next electric car will be called 'Model S' and that it will be built in the Bay Area instead of New Mexico. A 375 lbs black bear was shot down with a tranquilizer dart, but fell in the water. Adam Warwick jumped after it and kept the bear from drowning in sting-ray infested waters . A roundup of 7 Electric Scooters , from prototypes to production models. Finally, Carlos Ghosn announced that Nissan would produce an electric car by 2010 . Some are skeptical about labor costs in the Bay Area, but that's where the Tesla Motors plant will be. The state gave tax breaks and incentives to keep it there, so that certainly helps. The 'Model S' electric car should cost around $60,000 and have a range of 225 miles. Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission biologist Adam Warwick just couldn't let the bear drown, so he took off his shirt and dive after it. The 375 lbs black bear had been spotted in a residential area, obviously looking for food, and was shot with a tranquilizer dart. Unfortunately, before it went under, it jumped in the water of the Gulf of Mexico. Photos and a video here . With 30% of Americans saying they would consider riding a scooter—even some people we wouldn't expect to—and sales of scooters up by 200%, now seems like a perfect time to revisit some of our past scooter coverage and bri ...

Presidential politics ran on two tracks this week. Barack Obama roaming the world to widespread applause and great pictures. And John McCain and his campaign griping about it all. For Thursday, McCain, a noted gambler, thought he had an ace in the hole to counter Obama's big Berlin speech. He would chopper out from Louisiana to an oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico. Which would do two things. Remind everyone he was a naval aviator. And push his big New theme that more offshore oil drilling is the way to bring down sky-high gas prices. (The existence of which he blames on Obama, curiously, in his latest TV ad, ignoring that gas prices have tripled under President Bush.) All with really cool pix. But his campaign had to cancel late Wednesday, officially because of the threat of inclement weather from nearby Hurricane Dolly. Which might have been a tip right there that the whole offshore drilling thing is, as putative panaceas go, pretty problematic. McCain reportedly bemoaned the lost opportunity all yesterday. It's somewhat surprising he's upset it didn't happen, as I think it would have been a real debacle. Here are six reasons he is very fortunate he ended up at Schmidt's Sausage Haus -- no relation to campaign director Steve Schmidt -- in Ohio yesterday, rather than on a pitching oil platform in the Gulf of Mexico: 1. California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, and Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell, a ...

McCain and his would-be first lady tour the Basilica de Guadalupe in Mexico City today with Monsignor Diego Monroy Ponce Mexico City's Basilica de Guadalupe is one of the holiest sites for Mexico's Roman Catholics and, by extension, many of the Hispanic voters up north -- in New Mexico, Nevada, Colorado and a few other key states. So Sen. John McCain made a stop there today on his Latin American I-know-more-about-the-world-than-Obama tour. Praying for a good November Notable footnote: Jeb Bush , the first brother and former Governor of Florida, just happened to be in Mexico "on business," and tagged along for most of the tour. Alas, no photos have moved on the wire to provide visual fuel for the veep speculation. "I think he's going to win," Bush told reporters. "He just needs to be himself and not let senator Obama redefine himself." Does that count as a violation of the rule about leaving politics at the U.S. shore? ...

Senator Obama passed on attending this year's meeting of a centrist Democratic group, the Democratic Leadership Council, even though it was in his hometown of Chicago and he was in the city for most of the session. However, some key vice presidential prospects for Mr. Obama made the trek, such as Governor Richardson of New Mexico and Governor Sebelius of Kansas. For more than a year, Mr. Obama and his main primary rival, Senator Clinton, have steered clear of the group, which is viewed with... ...

A law giving some illegal immigrants a tuition break at Kansas universities and colleges has withstood a legal challenge. The U.S. Supreme Court has refused to reinstate a lawsuit against the 2004 law filed by six parents and 18 out-of-state students attending Kansas institutions. The law allows illegal immigrants who qualify for the lower tuition rates reserved for legal Kansas residents. It has the support of Gov. Kathleen Sebelius. According to national groups, nine other states have enacted similar laws: California, Illinois, Nebraska, New Mexico, New York, Oklahoma, Texas, Utah and Washington. "Governor Sebelius has always been confident in this law, which makes college accessible," spokeswoman Nicole Corcoran said Wednesday. "Those eligible for in-state tuition must prove they're pursuing citizenship and must pay their own way and are not eligible for state or federal financial aid." ...
