Interplay has relaunched its company website which notes, among other things, that the company's Fallout MMO is still in development. Codenamed "Project V13", Interplay has opened an Orange County, CA office for development of the game. It has also hired Chris Taylor, who was part of the original Fallout team, to be the lead system designer for the New game. Taylor joins several other former Fallout development team members who had been hired by Interplay previously. Though Interplay sold the rights to Fallout to Bethesda last year, it retained the possibility to develop an online Fallout game. Interplay does need to raise at least $30 million in funding for the project before April of 2009, and Bethesda is allowed to keep close tabs on development -- or the company loses the MMO license. ... by: Alex Eperjessy Now this is more like it. For the past two years, Dmitri Williams, Nick Yee and a whole lot of other people, mined Everquest II for all the data it could give, with Sony Online Entertainment's complicity. The results are here and they'll tell you who plays (age, gender, race, income, education, religion, media use, health), how much they play and why. It could've become a sterile academic exercise but instead, it turns out to be a very useful resource. ... Source: www.topix.com --- 23 days ago

Goes by the name "Otherland". Sounds like it will be low on the PvP - preview describes as "largley cooperative". Still, they're playing about with some of the typical notions of MMOs apparently - we'll see just how far they deviate from the mainstream. Also, while the descriptions are quite hacker/cyberspace esque, I don't see the "punk" aspect that properly charaterises cyberpunk at all. Anyone read the novels can confirm/deny that? ... While pulling together this morning's stories, GP stumbled across ExGamer.net . The site chronicles the unnamed blogger's struggles with compulsive MMO play. ExGamer describes himself as " a 40 year old Canadian in recovery from a nine year compulsive online gaming habit ." From the site's FAQ: My life as a gamer was out of control. I couldn’t hold down a job or function as a brother, son or husband... This blog is about my ongoing healing process, and that of some New friends I’ve met along the way... This is not an abstract illness; it involves the use and abuse of specific products that proved very problematic for me... I could not stop playing online role playing games for years, no matter how bad things got. I would spend hundreds, even thousands of dollars and untold hours in one game, only to bore of it and seek another “high” elsewhere. It also appears that ExGamer will be appearing on the upcoming Dr. Phil segment on game addiction that GP mentioned recently in regard to Wendy Kays, wife of SOCOM lead designer Graham Kays. GP: Good luck to ExGamer with the site - and especially with his recovery. ... Source: www.igarchive.com --- 9 days ago

Eurogamer breaks news that German games publisher DPT Entertainment will be making an MMORPG based on Tad Williams' Otherland series of books . As anyone who has read the books will know, this could be an interesting New spin on virtual worlds. Quoting: "For want of a better soundbite, let's call it the first cyberpunk MMO: a virtual world about virtual worlds, in which your avatar is an avatar, the NPCs play NPCs, and you explore a multiverse in which you might be in realistic historical surroundings one minute, and cartoon fantasy ones the next. Everything changes, even your own appearance, and nothing is even pretending to be real. ... You start the game as one of those consciousnesses in a place called the Land of the Lost, a nightmare scenario which you're trying to escape. You'll run, be killed, and reborn in a 'baby' state as a simple, low-rent sim (though we suspect the game won't be using that term, for obvious reasons) - a blank, featureless avatar that can be male, female or even neither." ...
