Book -- $14.93 A Leadership Network Publication A New Kind of Christian 's conversation between a pastor and his daughter's high school science teacher reveals that wisdom for life's most pressing spiritual questions can come from the most unlikely sources. This stirring fable captures a New spirit of Christianity--where personal, daily interaction with God is more important than institutional church structures, where faith is more about a way of life than a system of belief, where being authentically good is more important than being doctrinally "right," and where one's direction is more important than one's present location. Brian McLaren's delightful account offers a wise and wondrous approach for revitalizing Christian spiritual life and Christian congregations. The merchants of cruelty lost the New York Times today in a strongly worded editorial embracing Prop 2. Here's their take: "It would ban the confinement of animals in a way that keeps them from being able to stand, sit, lie down, turn around and extend their limbs. The fact that such fundamental decencies have to be forced upon factory farming says a lot about its horrors. We urge California voters to pass Proposition 2. We urge every state to enact similar laws." If Prop 2 passes, the New York Times is likely to get it's wish. While opponents of Prop 2 malign the Yes on Prop 2 campaign for being organized by "a well-funded Washington D.C.-based special interest group," of which they mean (though don't mention by name) the well-respected Humane Society of the United States, the truth is more than 70 percent of the funds raised for the No on Prop 2 campaign have come from out-of-state egg-producing factory farms and related industries. While the No campaign screeches in horror at the prospect of forcing California's factory farms to give egg-laying hens enough space to turn around and spread their wings, utilizing the sky-is-falling rhetoric that every industry always uses whenever any government body attempts to impose any regulations, those with the most to lose are actually the largest factory farms that primarily exist out-of-state. While egg production is a rather small industry in California, representing only about 6 percen ...

Just what we need: more cockroaches! Get ready because University of Florida bug experts warn that all the folks raising these creepy crawlers as lizard food could create New varieties of cockroaches, reports the Gainesville Sun. Excuse us, but we didn't know that people were raising roaches to feed lizards. And, really, don't you have anything better to do? We've got enough problems with that Turkestan roach, which caught a lift from the U.S. military returning from the Middle East. And the 3-inch-long Madagascar hissing roach. And we've got enough creeper critters here already. And, no, that's not a reference to New Yorkers.
