Filed under: Digital Cameras It looks like those not willing to give up on DV tape for their HD recording needs now have a pair of New options to consider from Sony, which has just introduced its HDR-FX1000 and HVR-Z5J Camcorders in Japan. The HDR-FX1000 (pictured above) is the slightly more consumer-minded of the two, with it boasting a not-outrageous price of ¥400,000 (or roughtly $3,700), and some impressive specs all around, including a 20x optical zoom, both 24p and 30p modes, and Sony's G-series lens, which promises to deliver some top-notch images. The HVR-Z5J, on the other hand, offers some more specialized features like XLR audio inputs, PAL and NTSC compatibility, and support for the DVCAM format in addition to usual DV/HDV option. Look for it to set you back ¥554,400 (or just over $5,000) when it lands in December, with the HDR-FX1000 set to slip out ahead of it on November 10th. The inexorable march away from tapes and discs has picked up steam in Camcorder Land—and this trend will continue until MiniDV and DVD home video makers take their place on the obsolete shelf next to Walkman cassette music players and analog televisions. This won’t happen overnight, but it’s happening right in front of our eyes as flash-based and hard disk drive Camcorders win-over the public and take share from competing formats. Basically, it’s the iPod Phenomenon dramatically reshaping the camcorder biz. According to industry execs, tape and DVD cam sales are dropping while the New—and definitely cooler—formats take over. Almost all of the recent releases were memory card, flash or HDD based. And many of them are high-definition. I’m a big fan of high-def hard drive Camcorders because their storage capabilities can’t be beat. It’s great not worrying if you have enough blank tape or DVDs for saving memories. And the small size and weight of flash-based models is also a winner. Finally, a high-definition camcorder is the only way to go, even though they’re much more expensive than SD ($799 USD is still about the cheapest, compared to $250 USD for MiniDV). With these preferences on the table, I was happy to test a New JVC HD Everio with a 120GB HDD. This high-def camcorder saves up to 15 hours of best-quality AVCHD video plus it performs several other unique tricks we’ll disclose on the following pages. Is it worth 1,300 clams? R ...

This post is syndicated with permission from Gadgetoholic.com When Camcorders first launched decades ago the image quality was bad, the cameras were huge, and lots of tapes were needed to record anything. At the CEATEC show in Japan next week, Hitachi will show off their latest technology which works to improve the resolution of standard-def to nearly 1080p quality. The up-converting tech will convert DVDs and SDTV to almost-HD and could even make HDTV broadcasts look better. No specifics have been released yet on how this technology will work, but one thing we do know is that it “analyzes the luminance signals of input images before processing multiple regions at a time.” Each frame is processed individually in real-time, making this a very fast and efficient way to up-convert standard definition images. It can also determine between areas that are in-focus and those that are in the background and adjusts the sharpness accordingly. We can expect to see this New Hitachi tech in the wild in their HDTVs sometime after 2010. [via Electronista ] Relevant Entries on SlashGear Hitachi W51H - Featuring High Resolution Mobile Screen! Hey there. I'm Mike, one of the folks at Motionbox committed to making Motionbox the best personal video-sharing site out there. As you can imagine, there are a good number of video nerds here at Motionbox. Truth be told, I'm not really one of them. I just want to shoot a bunch of video of my family and friends, upload it to Motionbox, and share it with them (mostly with the goal of embarrassing each and every one of them). And, I want it to be easy. I have a Canon 790IS which is all well and good for photos and mediocre-quality videos, but the Motionbox team recently pooled all our loose change and bought a Canon Vixia HD10. You can see its specs here , and you can see some videos taken with it here . This camera is awesome. It's the first HD camera I've used where I was immediately blown away by pretty much everything about it: It holds a ton of video, the picture quality is flawless, and it's got crazy zoom. It's pretty awesome. But... it uses the AVCHD format. AVCHD (Advanced Video Codec High Definition) is the format used by most of the snazzy New AVCHD cameras. The consensus in the world of electronics and video enthusiasts has generally been that these Camcorders are amazing, but that AVCHD is a useless format for the majority of us who just want things to work. Why useless? Because there's no super-easy way to let you edit, share, or play back AVCHD videos on your computer. And – until NOW -- not a single video sharing site out ...

Toshiba's palm-sized, full-HD camcorder offers huge capacities In our group test of high-definition digital Camcorders (May 2008), we noted a couple of things. Not only were the devices getting smaller and lighter as footage is increasingly stored via integral hard disk, they were also utilising a New compression format – AVCHD – an MPEG-4 code that allows playback on Blu-ray devices including Sony’s PlayStation 3. Toshiba uses AVCHD in its New Gigashot A100F. This means that Mac users will need iMovie ‘08 along with an Intel-based machine. ...

RCA has expanded its popular Small Wonder line with New EZ300HD. For only $160, you get a pocket-sized cam that's capable of shooting 720p HD video and crisp pictures, with the same 2.4-inch screen and easy controls as previous Small Wonder Camcorders — including the ability to toss videos you shoot right onto YouTube. You won't go very far with only 2GB of internal memory if you want more than just snippets of HD video, though. Luckily you can upgrade that by up to 16GB thanks to its SD card slot , which RCA clocks as about 10 hours' worth of HD capture. The EZ300 is aimed squarely at consumers who aren't looking to make the next great indie movie, but instead at someone who wants something that'll capture moments to remember in a format that'll look good on modern televisions. Hitachi has today announced an ultra thin LCD display prototype at CEATEC Japan. Measured at a mere 15mm in depth, the New WOOO is 58% thinner than current production of Wooo UT series. The 37-inch prototype replaced IPS panel with newest and better RGB backlit LCD model and also boasted a huge color gamut of 150% wider than HD Rec.709 color space. Also disclosed are the weight of the display has been reduced to 22lb and unit has more economical power consumption;it only consumed half the power of year 2007 model. Fewer details such as contrast and brightness are available, but an economical and light-weight 37-inch LCD with ultra thin profile can be a serious contender for OLED display. Small is the New big. Well, it is when it comes to Camcorders. The likes of Sanyo with its Xacti range knows this, and that is why in recent months we have seen myriad companies release diminutive HD shooters that can film at 1080p and still slip in your pocket. While JVC hasn't exactly been quick off the mark, it has unveiled a HD pocket camcorder at this year's Ceatec, in Japan. Lack of specs There's been no official announcement as such and actual specs are thin on the ground, but the mere fact that JVC has created an SDHC based HD Everio is something to get pretty excited about. A quick look at the picture of the cam (picture courtesy of Akihabara News) and it's plain to see that it will shoot using the AVCHD codec and most of the buttons you need to work the thing are situated within finger distance at the top of the chassis. Looks-wise, it's a touch reminiscent of Panasonic's SDR-S10, which is no bad thing. ...
