At a well-attended and jovial dinner on Friday, the Mount Shasta Elks honored the patriotism of local residents as part of their Americanism program. Recognized by the Elks were Sergeant First Class David Adlard of the National Guard, Niels and Hanne Henriksen of Lake Shastina, who recently became American Citizens after living in the US for 40 years, and Boy Scout Clayton Poore. As a prime rib dinner was enjoyed by all, Sergeant First Class Adlard was commended for his service to the nation. Adlard returned in May 2007 from a year of service in Iraq, where he was a program manager in the Army Corp. of Engineers. Adlard said he was stationed in Basrah, which is in Southern Iraq. He served as a program manager in charge of refurbishing gas plants there. Adlard explained Iraqis use natural gas for electricity. Propane is also separated out and used for heating and cooking. “It gets up to 140 degrees in Basrah,” Adlard said. “The Iraqis need the propane for air conditioning. Children have difficulty with the extreme heat... they are constantly fighting heat exhaustion.” Adlard said he worked with Iraqi people and never had any problems. “They were friendly. They just wanted stability... they had families and needed their jobs.” Adlard was in a unit of 40 National Guardsmen from all over California who were sent to Iraq. He said he was honored to be recognized by the Elks, who sent him care packages while he was overseas. He also gave tha ...
