We've been so busy here that we haven't been able to announce the New Books uploaded on literature, fully bookmarked and free. A Treatise on Currency and Banking , by Condy Raguet (1889) With such advantages resulting from the use of credit, so palpable and so well known to every body, it is not extraordinary that the "credit system" should be so much extolled. It is indeed a great moral power, without the employment of which our country could never in so short a period of time have attained to its present advanced state of wealth and prosperity. Whilst seeing and acknowledging, however, this important truth, we must not lose sight of another truth equally important, which is, that nothing but capital, that is, something which possesses an intrinsic value, can possibly be the means of enabling the person who obtains it on credit to produce a New commodity or a New value, and we must be particularly careful to remember that the credit system thus extolled, is not the banking system, as some would endeavor to inculcate in their speeches and writings. See especially page 155 for his discussion of banks that extend loads when there is no specie backing: Speculation, over trading, and extravagance, are all multiplied, as every New addition of the currency appears to augment what people suppose to be the mass of wealth. Author, stylist and all-around crafty guy Matthew Mead brings his stylish touch to Halloween in "Matthew Mead Halloween Tricks and Treats" (Time Inc. Home Entertainment, $19.95). And unless you truly hate the ghoulish holiday, good luck resisting Mead's charms. He's collected so many good ideas that you'll wish Halloween was more than just a single day. His ideas for easy sweets are enough to make the book worthwhile - who knew that the simple act of adding candy eyeballs to a frozen fudge pop could create such a fun and spooky treat? A candy corn-inspired ice cream parfait, orange hot chocolate and doughnut-hole kabobs aren't particularly time- or labor-intensive, but the cute factor is impossibly high. And if your sweet tooth can't handle any more, try a craft project or two. Some (a quilt) are longer projects, but some (ghosts made from white paper cupcake liners) can be accomplished in a few minutes. Mead makes templates for many of the crafts (and sweets) available at matthewmeadstyle.com. The appetizers are coming. It's that time of year - when pigs in a blanket, ranch dip and, cheese and crackers, make their annual appearances at festive fetes. This year, why not add a few New recipes to your hors d'oeuvres bag of tricks? Pamela Sheldon Johns' "50 Great Appetizers" (Andrews McMeel, $14.99) keeps things fairly simple, without a lot of crazy ingredients or fussy preparations. Some of the recipes require advance preparation and as ... Source: www.hotfroguk.co.uk --- 9 days ago
