Just the other day, bluestreet pointed out one example of the Lame Pettiness of Neuheisel Haters .  In that case, we saw how Seattle Times writers with an ax to grind against Neuheisel jumped at the opportunity to take a joke at an alumni auction out of context. Well, those guys aren't alone.  Now, our friends at SMQ are taking their turn : The New Guy(s): Rick Neuheisel has a long way to go to escape the long shadow of charlatanism: he left Colorado with more than 50 rules violations and two years’ probation in 1998, was investigated for illegal recruiting visits, reprimanded by the board of the American Football Coaches’ Association and compared to Al Capone in Slate (the NCAA got him, but only for a technicality – gambling on basketball. like Capone got nailed for tax evasion – instead of the meat of his transgressions). This kind of jab isn't unexpected, at least from the Bill Plaschke's of the world (I can just see the Capone reference in one of his patented single sentence paragraphs).  But, it's not what one would expect from SMQ.  You see, despite apparently OMG holdingz a grudge , SMQ is a pretty thoughtful guy, known for in-depth analysis and doing his homework. So why would SMQ be so cavalier with the facts about Neuheisel?  Surely, before branding Neuheisel a "charlatan," he'd cite to more than a couple five year old articles that tell only part of the story.  Surely, SMQ's above-average Google skills gave light to th ...

Hey all. This site does a great job at covering UCLA and for someone like me who has never lived a day outside the eastern time zone, it's a window into UCLA's world. Anyway, I've been doing some analysis of coaching records for some guys down on my side of the country. I know that Rick Neuheisel's record has been a subject of much debate, so I went ahead and plugged his numbers at both Colorado and Washington into my spreadsheet and let the formulas do the rest. I mean only to provide stats; I'll let you all do the interpretation since y'all know the guy better than I do. Here is Neuheisel's record broken down by site: Site Wins Losses Totals Home 39 11 50 Away 23 16 39 Bowls 4 3 7 Totals 66 30 96 And here is his record broken down by the tier of his opponents. The tier for a team in a particular year was determined exclusively by that team's final, post-bowl winning percentage. First tier is .750-1.000, second is .500-.749, third tier is .250-.499, and fourth tier is .249 and below. For example, USC in 2001 counts as second tier because it finished 6-6, while USC in 2002 counts as first tier because it finished 11-2. Tier Wins Losses Pct. Avg. Scored Avg. Allowed First 12 13 .480 25 27 Second 20 14 .588 28 25 Third 26 3 .897 33 20 Fourth 8 0 1.000 42 22 If you want comparison points, these same tables for Tommy Bowden and Bob Stoops are here , and for Tommy Tuberville they're here . All three of those guys have been at their cu ...

Here is a very good example of how Neu haters will operate this season. They are going to look for every opportunity to make something out of nothing. From the blog Wizard Of Odds , which I guess is looking for anything to write about this long off season: UCLA held an athletic fundraiser Saturday night and Slick Rick Neuheisel was in fine form. Not only did the Bruin coach conduct the Alumni Band for one song, he played auctioneer when it came time for bids on a sideline pass to UCLA's game against rival USC on Dec. 6 at the Rose Bowl. According to an account posted on Bruin Zone , the bidding wasn't going well, so Neuheisel got up and said, "OK, I'll let you call call the first play." Bidding picked up and the pass went for $10,000. Later, Neuheisel muttered that, "Well, we may audible your call." Neuheisel was only warming up. Next up was a package to the Bruins' game at Washington, where a rather hostile crowd is expected to greet the former Huskies coach on Nov. 15. The package includes travel on the team charter, lodging at the team hotel and a game ticket. Neu haters in Washington did not waste any time in picking up this story non story . I talked to a couple of people who attended that event.  It was clear to them that Neheisel was making a joke, and everyone in the audience understood. But the sense of humor probably got totally lost on these Neu haters who are looking for any excuse to advance that "Slick Rick" narrati ...

I want to follow up Menelaus’ post from yesterday with some more data points wrt to our expectations for next season (at this point of time).  And again, just like Menelaus did, I will start this by briefly recapping this expectations related discussion on BN. So last weeek, we put up not one, but four posts (see here , here , here , and here ) discussing and setting our expectations for the next season.  From my vantage point, I am expecting UCLA to win somewhere around 6 games in Rick Neuheisel’s first season at UCLA.  Following my first post , BruinsRule - someone who I have enormous respect for -questioned whether I was setting the expectations in a way to make it easy for RN to meet our expectations.  I responded to his concern with my reasons on how I calibrated my expectations.  From our subsequent exchange in the comment thread and BR’s clarification , it seems like we are all on the same page. But that explanation (provided based on facts and statistics) and Achilles’s subsequent well thought out post , didn’t seem to stop some people (as noted in Menelaus’s post from yesterday) from charging that we are low balling the expectations game to give Neuehisel some kind of break compared to his fired predecessor.  To make that case, people are citing to the expectations we set for Karl Dorrell for his fourth and fifth seasons at UCLA, assuming somehow we had set the same expectations for Karl Dorrell in his first year at UCLA ...

Neuheisel's take on the players going over the wall... The good news is that there was solidarity. They were together on it. It was also good news that the coaches were disappointed. Everyone was on the same page, on both sides. What? Scout.com: Preview 2008 - Q&A with Rick Neuheisel ...
