In years past, companies relied on Network edge security to establish a perimeter separating trusted insiders from everyone else. However, the distributed and dynamic nature of modern networks, combined with targeted threats against applications and data, is changing that focus. Today, Network security is more about controlling individual user access to services and data, and auditing their behavior to ensure compliance with policies and regulations. Best practices developed for perimeter security still apply, but they must now be deployed more pervasively and become an integral part of the Network itself. This tip looks at how unified threat management (UTM), SSL VPNs, endpoint security, NAC and Network security monitoring are being used to secure the new Network Architecture. ... Server virtualization not only challenges Network managers with consolidation and latency considerations, it also places a heavier burden on the Network infrastructure going into each physical server. When a company reduces the number of physical servers, the number of people served by each server can increase proportionately. Network managers need to look at implementing high availability and data replication software to minimize the impact a server problem could have on the Network. This tip looks at the Network Architecture and capacity planning issues that must be considered when you implement server virtualization. ... Source: dallas.backpage.com --- 13 days ago

Abstract As a promising solution to efficiently achieving fiber to the home (FTTH), Ethernet passive optical Network (EPON) is currently improved to provide intercommunication among customers, together with normal traffic delivery, via optical local area Network emulation. It is a new research direction and expected to enhance the normal EPON performances. The purpose of this article is to review the state-of-the-art solutions to emulating optical local area networks (OLANs) over EPON. We discuss the major problems involved, e.g., Network Architecture, control mechanisms, and other potential enhancements. We also outline areas for future researches.
