SINGAPORE: With a new-look team comprising five rookies, Singapore's netballers were gunning for victory in their first international test at the Fisher & Paykel Nations Cup 2008 at the Toa Payoh Sports Hall on Sunday. But the defending champions were defeated 66-63 by Sri Lanka in their first round-robin match, which was also the tournament opener. Despite the absence of goalkeeper/goal defence Li Qingyi, who fractured her finger during a training session last week, Singapore held the lead for most of the match. They were ahead 16-13 after the first quarter, 32-31 at the end of the second and 47-45 going into the final period. But a number of costly mistakes saw Sri Lanka tie the game 59-59 with five minutes on the clock. Turning up the pressure, Sri Lanka forced several turnovers to pull away and register their first victory over Singapore in five attempts since the 2001 Asian Championships. Sri Lanka lost 60-54 to Singapore at last year's Nations Cup. Co-captain Pearline Chan, who was part of last year's championship winning side, was visibly disappointed. "It's hard not to feel disappointed as it's not a position we're quite used to, especially at home," said the 29-year old, who plays in wing attack. "But this is a team that's growing and looking ahead to the 2011 World Champs." Coach Lisa Beehag said her team will regroup for today's match with Samoa. "The team never felt totally confident in the match," she said. "At this in ... Source: www.nzherald.co.nz --- 23 days ago
