As Barack Obama never tires of saying, America is a country where 'ordinary people can do extraordinary things.' In January 2006, Neil Entwistle, a seemingly ordinary 27-year-old Englishman with an honours degree from the University of York, who had been living in the US for barely four months, shot dead his American wife, Rachel, and their baby daughter, Lillian, with a long-barrelled Colt .22 revolver borrowed from his father-in-law's gun collection. By the time the bodies were discovered in their house in Hopkinton, Massachusetts, huddled together beneath a rumpled duvet in the brand-new four-poster bed bought by the couple just ten days before, Entwistle was home in England, living with his parents in Worksop, as if what had happened in America was a violent dream from which he'd woken to reality in his old back bedroom at 27 Coleridge Road. ...

Judge Diane Kottmyer Thursday sentenced Neil Entwistle to life in prison for the murder of his wife and baby, and has imposed a condition that he not profit from the sale of his story in any way. The judge said it would only be "symbolic" to sentence him to two consecutive life sentences - one for each murder - and so instead the two will run concurrently. The judge made a point to say that in this state, this sentence has no chance for parole and Entwistle - if his appeal is unsuccessful - will actually remain in jail for life, only except if the governor issues a pardon. Regarding the two possession charges - of a firearm and of ammunition - he will be put on probation for 10 years, to run concurrent with his life sentence, with the condition that he not profit from the sale of his story. Kottmyer said he will serve his time at Massachusetts Correctional Institution at Cedar Junction in Walpole. To comment, visit the Entwistle trial blog . ...

During closing arguments on Monday, prosecutor Michael Fabbri said there were two sides to Neil Entwistle. A notebook recovered in Entwistle's pocket when he was arrested in England in February 2006 seems to display both sides of the man convicted Wednesday for the murder of his wife, Rachel, 27, and daughter, Lillian Rose, 9 months. The notebook, and several other pieces of evidence, were displayed yesterday in the same courtroom in which Entwistle was convicted the day before. In some portions of the notebook, Entwistle sounds like a distraught husband and father, while in others he poses as a friend trying to sell the Entwistle story. "I'm afraid I am not strong enough to take this any further," Entwistle wrote in often hard-to-read writing. "I miss my wife and daughter so much it feels like I am completely empty inside. The void grows larger each day ... I need to be with them again, my orange Rose and my Lilly." But, in other sections of the notebook, Entwistle wrote two letters on one notebook page to newspaper editors. In one, he introduces himself and said he wanted to speak to an editor or someone else responsible for covering the case. In the second portion of the letter, which appears to be a rough draft, he said, "I am a close friend and confident of Neil Entwistle." He said he wanted to give Neil's side of the story and asks about money. "What's of interest to us is what price you would be willing to pay for exclusive right ...

On June 25, when a jury foreman twice pronounced "guilty," convicting Neil Entwistle of murdering his wife and daughter, prosecutor Michael Fabbri showed no elation. Fabbri, an Ashland resident, didn't celebrate. He didn't go out and toast the verdict with others from the Middlesex County District Attorney's Office. Instead, the veteran assistant district attorney said what he felt was relief. "It's a lose-lose situation," Fabbri said. "Regardless of the verdict, it is not a moment to celebrate. Both families lost someone." Following a four-week trial in Middlesex Superior Court, Entwistle, 29, a British national, was convicted of murdering wife Rachel, 27, and daughter, Lillian Rose, 9 months old, two years ago in Hopkinton. Fabbri has prosecuted about 20 murder cases since his first in 1995. The Entwistle case, by far, had the highest profile and was a long way from his first criminal trial - a drunken driving case in 1985 for which he had 15 minutes to prepare. The murders of Rachel and Lillian Rose Entwistle in their upscale suburban neighborhood attracted local, national and international attention. Every tiny detail and every mundane step in the legal process - even before Entwistle's arrest in February 2006 through his conviction last month - was featured in newspapers and broadcast news reports around the country. "I never considered the media to be a hindrance or a bother," said Fabbri, 53, who had never had to deal with ...

Neil Entwistle may follow several high-profile convicted murderers inside the walls of MCI-Cedar Junction in Walpole eventually, but he won't begin serving his life sentence there. Entwistle, 29, was convicted Wednesday of two counts of first-degree murder for the Jan. 20, 2006, murders of his wife, Rachel, 27, and daughter, Lillian Rose, 9 months. On Thursday, he was sentenced to life in prison without the chance of parole. He was sent to the Souza-Baranowski Correctional Center in Shirley on Friday, the only other maximum security facility in the state. Past notorious inmates at the Walpole prison have included Albert DeSalvo, also known as the "Boston Strangler," who died there in 1973, Richard Reid, the so-called shoe bomber, and John Salvi, the man convicted in a 1994 shooting spree at a Brookline abortion clinic. Salvi committed suicide in 1996. Media outlets as diverse The Boston Globe, The Sun (London) and Wikipedia incorrectly reported Entwistle was headed to Walpole rather than Shirley. It will take at least six months before Entwistle is going anywhere, though, according to Diane Wiffin, a spokeswoman for the state Department of Corrections. At six months, Entwistle, like any other maximum-security prisoner, will have a classification hearing to determine if he stays at Souza-Baranowski or transfers to Cedar Junction. This hearing will be repeated every six months. Inmates serving life sentences typically start with two ...

When prosecutor Michael Fabbri heard the jury foreman say "guilty,'' twice on June 25, convicting Neil Entwistle of murdering his wife and daughter, there was no sign of happiness. Fabbri didn't celebrate. He didn't go out and toast the verdict with others from the Middlesex County District Attorney's Office. Instead, the veteran assistant district attorney said he just felt relief. "It's never exciting,'' Fabbri said on Friday. "It's a lose-lose situation. Regardless of the verdict, it is not a moment to celebrate. Both families lost someone.'' Entwistle, 29, was convicted of murdering wife Rachel, 27, and daughter, Lillian Rose, 9 months, after a four-week trial in Middlesex Superior Court. Fabbri has prosecuted about 15 to 20 murders since his first in 1995, but the Entwistle case has been by far the most high profile. It was far cry from Fabbri's first trial, a drunk-driving case in 1985 when he had 15 minutes to prepare. The Entwistle case, the murder of a young mother and child in their upscale suburban neighborhood by their British husband and father, attracted local, national and international attention. Every step of the legal process - even before Entwistle's arrest in February 2006, through his conviction last month - every tiny detail was featured in newspapers and broadcast news reports around the country. Some weeks, not much happens. Some weeks, you can't believe so much could possibly take place in the space of a few days. You can't take it all in. And when you do, the connections break your heart. Last Tuesday, when juries were deliberating the fate of James Brescia, found guilty of the January 2006 murder of Ed Schiller, and the future of Neil Entwistle, convicted of killing his wife and daughter in Hopkinton in January 2006, testimony continued in the James Keown murder trial. And Jeff Weaver was fatally stabbed on his porch at 38 Gordon St. in Framingham. The same street where Carla and Caique Souza died, allegedly at the hands of Carla's husband, Jeremias Bins, in May 2006. On Wednesday, Kevin Porter of Stow was arraigned on charges he killed Weaver during a fight. It's a fair bet he'll eventually be in one of the courtrooms that drew so much media attention last week. But none of those bits of news was likely on the minds of a group of young men looking to cool off and have a little fun Wednesday afternoon. No, they weren't supposed to be there, in the slice of the Sudbury Reservoir near the Pike. But it's not like thousands of other kids haven't done the same thing. It's been a summertime ritual for decades. Just like swimming in the Milford quarries. Ask someone who grew up around here. Most everyone has a story about going swimming with buddies in off-limits water. It's practically a rite of passage. Just innocent fun. Ex ...

It's been a mystery in Southborough for many years, and it looks like it's going to remain a mystery. Nobody knows who originally put the American flag on the island in the Southborough Reservoir just off Rte. 9 westbound opposite White's Corner. Or, if they do know, no one is spilling the beans. The tradition dates back to around 1930, said Town Clerk Paul Berry. "No one really knows who puts it up every year," he said. And, it's certainly not town officials. "It's a group of citizens who do it," said Karen Galligan, superintendent of the Department of Public Works. "I think that kind of makes it more neat." When asked about the flag, Fire Chief John Mauro Jr. originally pleaded the Fifth. But after some coercion, he admitted that several weeks ago Fire Department personnel went out to the island and attempted to take down the old, tattered flag. However, the tree the flag hung from had been struck by lightning and there were few branches to scale. But after the Fire Department made its attempt, an unknown individual (or individuals) was successful in replacing the tattered flag with a new one. "The mystery, of course, is whodunit," Mauro said. *** So how do you unwind after weeks in the international spotlight prosecuting a double-murder case? If you're Michael Fabbri, the Ashland resident and Middlesex assistant district attorney who successfully prosecuted Neil Entwistle for the murder of his wife and child in their Hopkinton ...
