Got a toddler? If so, it’s worth picking up Dr. Harvey Karp’s book on them. We went right out and bought it after reading the New York Times story on it. Karp’s earlier book, Happiest Baby on the Block , was hugely influential for us. We were religious with our oldest, Alexander, about using Karp’s soothing techniques. They worked, and they worked again with Rowan, although I probably pulled back a bit from the constant swaddling the second time around. (Hey, that swaddle gets hot in Florida!) Karp’s theory is that a toddler’s development mirrors human evolution, but he rockets through evolutionary stages that took millions of years for our ancestors. So toddlers go from “charming chimp-child” to “knee-high Neanderthal” to “clever cave-kid,” and then “versatile villager” from 12 to 48 months. He writes: “Once you learn how your toddler is similar to a caveman, your true job will become clear – you must think of yourself as an ambassador from the 21st century to the Neanderthal people!” Then Karp offers a key piece of advice: how to talk a primitive language your toddler will understand. There are a few steps to speaking “toddler-ese”: short phrases, repetition, tone and facial expressions and body gestures. Here’s where it gets funny. It really comes down to embracing those silly moments when you manage to distract your toddler from some pending meltdown. So I tried it with Alexander, our 2-year-old: He woke up one morning and starting ...

clipped by: einbar clipper's remarks: Are modern humans the hybrid children of early humans and Neanderthals? For over a decade, scientists have wondered what exactly happened to the Neanderthals, low-tech hominids who populated Western Europe, when homo sapiens arrived on the scene from Africa and Asia with sophisticated weaponry and the rudiments of symbolic art. Homo sapiens arrived in Europe roughly 45,000 years ago, and co-existed with Neanderthals for what scientists estimate could have been anywhere from 1000 to 10,000 years. Some remains seem to indicate that the two groups shared the same caves, and might have traded with each other. But what else did they share? Clip Source: io9.com A group of Italian researchers published a new study today in PLoS One comparing the DNA from early human bones from about 28,000 years ago with DNA Neanderthal bones. What's cool about the new study is that the early human bones are quite recently discovered, and therefore very unlikely to have been contaminated by DNA from humans who have handled them. The researchers sequenced DNA from these bones, testing to see if there was significant overlap with Neanderthal DNA, which would indicate that homo sapiens' DNA had been changed by interbreeding with Neanderthals. Many anthropologists have long believed that the two species interbred because there are a few ancient skulls whose morphology seems to be a perfect blend of human and Neanderthal. ...

Cro-Magnon people and Neanderthals may have shared their European habitat from 45,000 to 30,000 years ago, but new evidence suggests that they didn’t get more intimate than that. Italian researchers sequenced mitochondrial DNA from Cro-Magnon bones dating from 28,000 years ago and found no trace of Neanderthal DNA, suggesting that the two early hominids [...] ...

Image by 八 creatività e follia ♫♪ via Flickr It's 2008. At least I think it's 2008 in most of the country. Unfortunately it looks like some parts of Mayo are stuck in some kind of time warp. I'm usually proud to be Irish, but when I see the kind of junk being pumped out by the Mayo Echo I cringe. If this were supported by any part of government I'd probably switch my citizenship without any further ado.  I don't want to be Irish if that's how Irish people behave. Seriously What am I ranting about? The Mayo Echo carried a story on its front cover recently with the title: Castlebar Lake Attracts Hundreds of Perverts Charming. Castlebar.ie 's main page tells most of the woeful and embarrassing story of how the site has been shut down due to legal threats from the idiots in The Mayo Echo. Idiots. While the comments on the Castlebar.ie site are not visible this explanation is: The comments that Mr Geraghty complained about arose from a highly controversial article written and published by Mr Geraghty in his newspaper covering what were termed "gay perverts" in Castlebar. Moderators judged the comments that resulted from this to be fair comment - many expressing strong disapproval of the article and including some of the opinion that it was likely to incite hatred against the gay community. The article included, for example, a clearly identifiable number plate of a car belonging to those that were allegedly some of the "hundreds" of "gay perv ...
