Can a nationalist found an empire? The United States of George W. Bush invaded Iraq in the name of democracy, though any representative Iraqi government would have to oppose a foreign occupation. Russia under Vladimir Putin tries to impose its will on Ukraine in the name of national self-determination, denying that Ukrainians are a separate people. The Chinese regime modernizes Tibet while expressing its own sense of national superiority. All of these are imperial policies by essentially nationalist regimes, and all of them spread nationalism around the world. Ukrainian national identity is ever more distinct. Tibetan protests spread from towns to the countryside. The American occupation will build the Iraqi nation, as the inevitable withdrawal creates a heroic myth of resistance to the outsider. In Isaiah Berlin’s famous formulation, a bent twig snaps back. ... Source: www.timesonline.co.uk --- 47 days ago

If they come here and try to fingerprint our children we will stop them.” ... Source: www.timesonline.co.uk --- 43 days ago

To the editor: This letter is in response to Mike Tyson of Salisbury's letter about "Obama suggestion scary" (July 10). Mr. Tyson scares me! He doesn't mention in his letter whether or not he has any school-aged children, but here in Amesbury, students are required to perform 75 hours of community service before they can even graduate from high school. It's as much a requirement as passing English! Should I assume from his rationale that the Amesbury School System is grooming all its graduates to be "goose-steppers in training"? ... The death of the great Alexander Solzhenitsyn over the weekend marked the end of one of the 20th century's most extraordinary lives. It was he who came out of the Soviet labor camps bearing witness to the cruelty and inhumanity of Soviet communism. It was he -- and not only he, but his voice above all others -- who told the world the truth about what communism really meant: mass murder, misery and oppression. What Solzhenitsyn accomplished was an act of heroic conscience that may be paralled, but never exceeded. His passing reminded me of 15 years ago, meeting a friend for a drink at a new hipster bar in Washington, DC. The theme was Soviet kitsch. There were hammers-and-sickles everywhere, and all kinds of Soviet junk on the walls. We were all meant to laugh at it. I found the whole thing unnerving, and left after my first drink. I would never have gone to a Nazi kitsch bar, and indeed such a place would never have opened. I believe we in the West have an unjustifiable double standard when it comes to Nazism and communism: we rightly find Nazism utterly abhorrent, but we -- at least we in the media, and in academia -- don't judge communism by the same standard. I think this is wrong, and an example of left-wing bias, conscious or unconscious. What do you think? --Rod Dreher ... Find more results for Nazism on RSSMicro.com |
