Perhaps taking a cue from Sarah Palin’s barbs against the elite Washington media, Ralph Nader has released a new Web ad chiding the same fickle bunch. But it’s not negative coverage he’s complaining about. It’s the lack of any coverage whatsoever. “All these reporters I’ve known, and the commentators and editors, they just froze,” he tells his pet parrot. “They froze, Cardozo. National television has just blacked out the Nader-Gonzales campaign. I don’t know what I have to do.” His best bet, he decides, is to dress up like a Panda and go to the zoo. Running against the media is a failsafe way to gin up attention. Voters devour it, even as they depend on the media to broadcast the candidate’s media-bashing. Even the media kind of likes it, since they get to discuss their favorite subject. At least Nader does it with a sense of humor, compared with Palin’s suggestion that media elites dislike her because she’s an outsider and “consider a candidate unqualified for that reason alone.” Nader has only registered on the election radar a couple of times this cycle, first with the usual will-he-or-won't-he, then with his vindication on the question of game-fixing in the 2002 NBA playoffs. Both times, the spotlight faded. (Between the conventions, the hurricanes, and the economic meltdown, you can sort of see why.) “To be, or not to be … a Panda,” Nader wonders. Hell, I'd cover that.   ...

Ralph Nader, in this youtube.com video wonders if he wouldn't be better covered as a political candidate if he dressed like a Panda and wandered over to the zoo, to cast amorous glances at the female pandas. In the video, which is actually a campaign ad, he spills out his thoughts to Cardozo, his parrot, and laments all the years that Dems and GOPs have spent merely parroting the corporate party line. ("I don't mean any disrepect.") "National television has just blacked out the Nader.Gonzalez campaign," he notes. Adding that networks go crazy for animal stories. "To be, or not to be, a Panda.." read more ...

Everyone needs some chicken soup for the soul - even pandas. The Wuhan Zoo in central China has been feeding its two pandas home-cooked chicken soup twice in a month to reduce stress and give them a nutritional boost, a zoo official said Friday. He Zhihua said 3-year-old Xiwang and Weiwei - literally meaning "Hope" and "Greatness" - were tired and suffering from a little shock since the start Monday of the weeklong National Day holiday, one of the biggest travel seasons of the year. On Wednesday, up to 30,000 people swarmed the zoo and about 1,000 tourists packed the Panda enclosure, shouting to get the animals' attention, He said. The pandas paced restlessly. "They had been getting less sleep, and they had to run around more," he said. "We felt it would be good to give them the soup because they were fatigued and had a bit of a shock." Reflecting the Chinese tradition of drinking slow-cooked chicken soup for health, the zookeepers boiled roosters in water overnight and added a pinch of salt to the concentrated stock. The pandas were served 2.2 pounds of soup in giant dishes, in addition to their regular diet of bamboo, milk and buns, He said. It was a hit. "They drank it all like they drank their milk. They loved it," he said. Pandas' diets usually consist mostly of bamboo, but they also can eat meat and He said in the wild they sometimes catch insects and small birds. Xiwang and Weiwei arrived at the Wuhan Zoo in June from the W ...

And now, a brief interruption in the US Presidential campaign… Nader talks to a parrot (whom I mistook to be his running mate) about media coverage, National health care and of course, dressing up as a Panda and making love to another Panda at the zoo. addthis_url = 'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.black-iris.com%2F2008%2F09%2F17%2Fbut-what-about-nader%2F'; [...] ...

To help promote this Sunday's Panda Webkidz Day at New National Park, Pete Orr and Charlie Manning from Our Washington Nationals headed to The Washington National Zoo yesterday meet and sign autographs for the many fans and children on hand near The Zoo's Giant Panda Habitat. For over one hour--the two players greeted hundreds of kids, taking pictures and basically having a pretty good time. When Washington takes on The Cincinnati Reds this coming August 3rd--each child 12 Years of Age and Under--the first 10,000 of whom entering New Nationals Park will--receive a Free Panda Webkidz Plush Doll along with a special baseball card featuring statistics of Tai Shan--the three year old Giant Panda--now in residence at The National Zoo. All Webkidz contain a special code that allows kids to play with a virtual version of the pet online. The turnout yesterday was quite remarkable. I could only stay for about 20 minutes, but the lines did not stop filling up with those interested in meeting the players for a few moments. After the meet and greet, Pete Orr and Charlie Manning took a brief tour of The Zoo--including a visit to see Tai Shan. ...
