UPDATE: Matt Johnson, attorney for Perry, said the writers were terminated for the "quality of their work" and accused the guild of misrepresenting the facts and negotiating in bad faith with the company. Tyler Perry, whose films embody messages of hope for people trying to improve their lives, draws the line at writers. At least that's the view of the Writers Guild of America, West. The guild announced late Thursday that it had filed unfair Labor practice charges with the National Labor Relations Board, alleging that mini-mogul Perry had unlawfully fired four writers on the cable TV series for trying to get a union contract. The guild has tried for months to negotiate a contract covering writers on the TBS sitcom and another Tyler series, "Meet the Browns," on USA. But those efforts broke down Tuesday, the guild said, when director/producer/playwright/actor Perry fired the writers after warning them that they could be replaced if they continued to angle for a guild contract. Not prone to shirking from a fight -- or a photo op -- the Writers Guild now plans to stage a "strike action" against Perry's production company during Saturday's opening ceremonies of his new studio facility in Atlanta. Perry could not be reached be reached for comment.     Since ending its 100-day strike in February, the Writers Guild has continued to take an aggressive stand in organizing reality TV shows, such as "American Idol" and various basic cable s ...

An overlooked order by the Labor Board’s lead lawyer this summer dealt a serious blow to the rights of U.S. workers to protest government policies. On May Day 2006, hundreds of thousands of immigrant workers walked off their jobs to protest restrictive immigration legislation. Some were fired, and brought complaints to the Board. Ronald Meisburg, the National Labor Relations Board general counsel, responded by posting a directive on “political advocacy” this July that enables bosses to immediately fire employees who participate in work stoppages of a political nature. The directive, as yet apparently unnoticed by both unions and Labor lawyers, cannot be appealed. Traditionally, workers around the world have used two kinds of walkouts to achieve their goals, economic strikes over workplace issues and political strikes directed at government policies. Political strikes in the U.S. are not as common as in Europe and Latin America. But they have happened, as in the 1970s strike by coal miners for black lung legislation and in this year’s walkout by West Coast dock workers against the Iraq war.   ...

On the heels of the Tyler Perry's House of Payne Labor controversy —in which WGA heads Patric Verrone and Michael Winship filed an angry grievance with the National Labor Relations Board, demanding restitution for "an abused writing staff forced to churn out sitcom dialogue with a pistol pressed to their temples by the world's wealthiest, union-busting grandma-with-a-dick,"—comes yet another fiery piece of rhetoric from the militant duo. This time, they target Fox's planned Osbourne family variety show, for which producer FremantleMedia is hoping they can get their snappy repartee wholesale. An excerpt from their letter : Fox has ordered a primetime comedy-variety show featuring Ozzy Osbourne and his family, and has engaged FremantleMedia North America, the company behind American Idol, to produce it. Because they wanted to hire WGA members to write the show, Fremantle contacted the WGAW to see if we would agree to a sub-standard contract. Attempting to pay as little as possible to the writers on the show, Fremantle asked to treat it as “half-scripted” and pay greatly reduced writing fees to those writers who wrote skits, interview material, intros, and “outros.” We refused to agree to such a deal because it would drastically undermine hard-won minimums and standards. [...] Accordingly, WGA East and West members may not write for the Osbourne variety show (working title: The Osbournes: Loud and Dangerous). Any members who perform ...

DENVER - Senate candidates Mark Udall and Bob Schaffer staked out their differences on Labor issues, health care and energy development on Tuesday, conceding they don't see eye-to-eye on many of the issues facing today's economy.Udall defended his decision to support the Employee Free Choice Act, which would allow Labor organizations to unionize workplaces without secret ballot elections, saying it still provides many worker protections that he supports. He said the Bush administration and the National Labor Relations Board have been "missing in action" in ensuring that employees are treated fairly. ...
