From the outside, the house at the bottom of Stocking Street looks no different from any other in the cul-de-sac. But step around the back and a purpose-built shed hums with the latest in green technology - a state of the art hydrogen fuel cell. Today the house in Lye, near Stourbridge in the West Midlands, will be opened as the first permanent hydrogen-powered home connected to the National Grid. The refrigerator-sized fuel cell unit will produce 1.5kW of electricity and 3kW of heat for the occupants of the house, with any excess power being fed into the National Grid. "You shouldn't notice any difference in the house," said Waldemar Bujalski from the University of Birmingham's fuel cells group, which will monitor its performance and reliability. "For the typical house, the unit is capable of providing 65% of the power on average and about 75% of total energy demand, both electricity and heat." There is no way yet to pipe hydrogen directly into homes, so the demonstration house will use natural gas that comes in via the existing mains supply. This is first passed through a steam reformer that generates hydrogen. The hydrogen is then combined with oxygen in a fuel cell unit, made by German company Baxi Innotech, that produces both electricity and heat and without producing carbon dioxide. Although creating the hydrogen from gas does produce some carbon dioxide, using the fuel cell cuts overall household emissions by 40% compared ...

The UK government is desperate for a new generation of nuclear power stations. But how is the older generation doing? Not well … Six of the UK's ten nuclear stations are not operating at full capacity. Three are completely closed, one is operating at half capacity and two have been reduced to 70 per cent because of safety fears. There is talk of brownouts and blackouts in the UK as early as next month when it is feared the country’s National Grid will be unable to fulfil demand for electricity.. So why has the British government continuing to fail to learn the lessons of the past? Why isn’t the rest of the world looking at the example of the UK’s nuclear industry? ... Harvard residents now have an alternative for purchasing their electricity — and it’s called Easy Energy. It’s an audacious plan: compete with National Grid to supply electricity to the residential market by being cheaper, greener and user friendlier. But that’s exactly what Bolton residents Margaret Campbell and Stan Smith are doing via their new start up called Easy Energy of Massachusetts. “We always wanted to be entrepreneurs,” Campbell said. They had a consulting business in the late 1990s. Now with Easy Energy they have found a way to be their own bosses and bring the benefits of utility deregulation to the masses, or at least to National Grid’s customer base in Massachusetts. Experts disagree whether public utility deregulation has been boon or bust. It was meant to foster market competition to reduce prices. And for the most part it did — for large commercial and industrial customers. “But residential customers were left in the dust,” Campbell said. Only recently has competition begun to trickle down to smaller companies and residential customers, but the companies that offer it are still few and far between. Smith and Campbell have commanding backgrounds. Smith has been in the power industry for 35 years including 10 on the retail side and now works in energy forecasting. Campbell studied renewable energy in college, but by the time she graduated in the early 1980s, the latest oil crisis was over, and conservation jobs w ... Source: www.wickedlocal.com --- 4 days ago
A Boxford state representative said Tuesday the state is proposing a new telephone hotline to help residents keep warm this winter. The announcement by State Rep. Brad Hill, R-Ipswich, came during an energy assistance forum for seniors inside Boxford’s Community Center. Hill said the hotline would be an expansion on the state’s 211 telephone system which provides health and human services information in an attempt to reduce the number of unnecessary 911 calls. “It should be all one number, when it’s all said and done,” Hill said. The expanded 211 system is one of the proposals offered by the Governor’s Energy Task Force created in July. Hill was named minority leader of the bi-partisan group which looks at ways of making homes more energy efficient and reducing energy costs. Hill would not say when the hotline may be added but said it was a priority for the task force. Speaking in front of about 20 seniors, Hill discussed the dangers of space heaters and other non-traditional methods of keeping warm. Space heaters, he explained, generate sufficient heat to set nearby items such as curtains and other to ignite. “They are causing more damage than they are helping,” Hill said. Also speaking that afternoon were State Rep. Barbara L’Italien, D-Andover, National Grid spokesman Maria Raphael and Haverhill Community Action member John Condon. Raphael offered some energy saving techniques ranging from using more efficient light bulbs to u ... Source: www.motorsport.com --- 4 days ago

Councilors last night told Mayor Nancy Stevens to move ahead with plans to re-institute a municipal aggregation plan for energy rates. The city used the program from April 2007 through this June, but suspended it because of high energy costs. Small businesses and residents who opted into the program paid less than those who did not, as the city bought the energy wholesale and paid only for delivery costs. Now a new proposal is on the table. The contract would be for 18 months and would guarantee participants pay less than the cost of National Grid. "We're looking at the potential to save money," said Ward 6 Councilor Edward Clancy. "It is a small amount, but it is a savings to residents and businesses (that use the program)." The order comes with the caveat that Colonial Power Group, which oversees the municipal aggregation program, individually notify all the clients that opted out of the program the first time. "Some people might want to get back in," Clancy said. Councilor at large Michael Ossing and Ward 3 Councilor Scott Shafer abstained from the vote, which referred the matter back to Stevens to execute a contract. The program saved the city about $800,000 last time, said Brian Murphy, president of Colonial Power. "When you take a look at the city as a whole, this program has real value," Murphy said after the council meeting. (Paul Crocetti can be reached at 508-490-7453 or pcrocett@cnc.com.) ...
