Foods of the World , a new site from National Geographic , launched yesterday to relatively little fanfare. The site is equal parts global food bazaar, recipe resource, and exploration/research tool. In fact, the marriage of National Geographic and food in one convenient site makes so much sense that we were more surprised to hear that it didn't already exist than that it was launching at all. After the jump, more on Foods of the World. ...

Do you know what that innocent-looking Facebook app is really doing? Researchers at the Institute of Computer Science (ICS) have created a proof-of-concept Facebook application capable of covertly herding users of the popular social network into a powerful -- and malicious -- botnet. The demo application, called Photo of the Day, delivers a different image from National Geographic everyday but, behind the scenes, special code embedded into the application creates a botnet of Facebook users launching denial-of-service attacks. In a research paper (.pdf) to be presented at this year's Information Security Conference, the research group provided technical details of its Facebot: [W]e have placed special code in the application’s source code, so that every time a user views the photo,... ...

The head of the city's finance department on Thursday said citywide sales tax revenues are lagging, a sign that a National slowdown in retail sales has settled in Sioux Falls. City Finance Director Eugene Rowenhorst said sales tax revenues have grown by only 1.4 percent over the same period last year. If that pace continues for the rest of the year, city government will collect $2 million less than what officials anticipated when they created the 2008 budget last year. This year's budget assumes sales tax revenues would grow by 7 percent. Ernie Goss, an economist with Creighton University in Omaha, said the low numbers were surprising. But Goss, who monitors economic conditions in the Midwest, thinks regional trade centers such as Sioux Falls are more at risk for slowing retail sales. That's because they draw shoppers from a wide Geographic area, and many people are staying in their own communities because of higher gas prices. ...
