Filed under: Transportation We've been hearing about vehicle-to-grid (V2G) for quite a while, and now a team at the University of Michigan is conducting an extensive study on the technology as part of a national sustainable energy solution. While current electric plants are good at generating power, they often fall short when it comes to storage -- which can be a problem when there's a power surge or when demand increases. V2G will let hybrid-electric owners sell the power their car generates to the electrical power grid whenever the car is not in use. The research team envisions a time when millions of hybrid vehicle owners will come together to create one large battery, allowing us all to play a small part in building our Nation's energy independence. And sure, this all sounds good in theory. But wouldn't that mean relying on the neighbors to provide a key piece of the Nation's Infrastructure? Have you met the neighbors? Doesn't that seem a little... iffy ? Read  |  Permalink  |  Email this  |  Comments ...

October 1, 2008 By Bill Roberts Koreans who do not want to use a credit card do not need online payment services to shop on the Internet. The Nation's banking system installed a real-time direct settlement capability many years ago on the country's networking Infrastructure. About 50 percent of all bank transactions go through the online channel; another 30 percent take place through ATMs or telebanking using the same payment system. "Because of the ... ...

U.S. Rep. George Miller (D-CA), the chairman of the House Education and Labor Committee, issued the following statement today after the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics announced that 159,000 jobs were lost in September, the steepest decline in five years and the 9th consecutive month of job losses. “Today’s jobs report highlights the massive destruction that the Bush-Cheney-McCain wrecking ball has done to our economy, workers, and families. Eight years of their misguided policies have culminated in nine straight months of job losses. Two million workers have been unemployed for more than 27 months – 167,000 more than in August. Our nation is now dealing with the largest financial crisis since the Great Depression. “America’s working families are hurting, and in need of real solutions to get our economy back on track. For starters, we must extend unemployment benefits for hundreds of thousands of out-of-work Americans whose current benefits are set to expire this weekend. Today, as the House considers a financial rescue plan to protect the credit that small businesses and families rely on, we will also vote to extend unemployment benefits to help workers cover their bills while looking for a new job. “But workers also need a long-term strategy to generate new jobs. Last week, the House passed a much-needed stimulus that would create millions of good-paying jobs by investing in our crumbling Infrastructure – an investment that would ge ...

Transportation Futures: Ontario's Inaugural Road Pricing Forum http://www.rccao.com/events Date: Thursday, November 13, 2008 Location: Hart House at the University of Toronto Traffic congestion. Lost time. Crumbling roads. Increasing emissions. Few transportation choices. Most Ontarians agree that there is an urgent need to bring predictability and ease of mobility to the country's transportation network -- especially near large urban centres. Can road pricing play a role in improving mobility, air quality and the state of the Nation's transportation Infrastructure? Or is it just a cash grab? To answer these questions, the non-partisan Transportation Futures Forum will showcase how several countries have dealt with road pricing issues related to policy development, public acceptance, technology, governance and investment. They include: · London's Congestion Charging Scheme · France's Variable Tolling System · Germany's Satellite-based Toll Collection System for Heavy Trucks · Oregon's VMT-Based Road Charging Pilot Project · Holland's "Different Payment for Mobility'" Plan A round table of local experts will be on hand to assess which of these road pricing approaches might be best for the Ontario context and when the time might be right for implementation -- if ever. And your participation with over 150 decision makers, transportation practitioners, land use planners, business leaders, academic researchers and NGO representatives will ...

Kentuckians are among the Nation's least healthy people. All of the surveys show it. Many of us smoke, most of us don't get enough exercise and almost all of us have a deep and abiding love for fried, salty and sugary food. We also know Kentucky is a poor state, with little money available to build gyms, pools or trails for walking and biking. All of that is why many people who attended Lexington's first Bike Summit a year ago were struck by a presentation from Gil Penalosa, the former parks director of Bogot., Colombia. "He said, 'You have the best bike and pedestrian Infrastructure in the world already in place. You just have cars running up and down it all the time,'" Urban County Councilman Jay McChord recalled. ...

“This was the largest single act of class warfare in the modern history of this country,” Rep. Dennis Kucinich, D-Ohio, who led the fight in the House against the bailout, told me by phone from Cleveland. “It is a direct attack on the American people’s ability to be able to stabilize their homes and their neighborhoods. This single vote will define the careers of everyone. We are back to taxation without representation, to markets that are openly rigged.” “We buried the New Deal,” he said of the vote. “Instead of Democrats going back to classic New Deal economics where we prime the pump of the economy and start money circulating among the population through saving homes, creating jobs and building a new Infrastructure, our leaders chose to accelerate the wealth of the nation upwards.   »  original news ...

The U.S. economy is driven now by borrowing (both at a business and personal level). We've become a nation of consumers. Much of our so-called economic growth is fueled by people spending money they haven't earned by producing tangible goods and services (like China). And we've allowed the so-called "free trade" agreements to manage our industry off our soil into developing countries... our very Infrastructure of production taken away from us. The solution is NOT to allow our credit-dependent politicians to roll-over to the strong arm tactics of the Federal Reserve (the nations PRIVATE BANK - see http://tinyurl.com/2qr8u9 ) and bail out private industry. Thomas Jefferson was concise in his early warning to the American nation, "If the American people ever allow private banks to control the issuance of their currency, first by inflation and then by deflation, the banks and corporations that will grow up around them will deprive the people of all their property until their children will wake up homeless on the continent their fathers conquered." We, the people, must educate ourselves as to the REAL reasons we're facing this crisis. Bad home loans are the sympton - NOT the reason. We've allowed the Federal Reserve to print money out of thin air (inflation of the currency - $650 BILLION new dollars just this week) to lend to banks in the first place. If the banks don't have money in the form of deposits (savings) then they shouldn't be le ...

Re: “Palin fires at Obama for ‘pal,’ ” Oct. 5 news story. Sarah Palin’s comments about Barack Obama’s acquaintance with Bill Ayers are irrelevant to the issues facing Colorado voters. Obama and Ayers are not “pals.” Palin’s quips are juvenile and unwelcome in a nationwide debate. I do not want this important election to sink into mudslinging. Sarah, stop hyperventilating. Discuss bread-and-butter issues like health care and Infrastructure investment. Grow jobs in America. Voters, we’ve had eight years of Republican leadership. Their legacy is war, economic collapse and loss of freedom. McCain will continue with Republican ideology. We need Obama to turn our great nation around, back to leadership and strong productive citizenship. We can change direction of our nation by voting for Barack Obama. Victoria Berge , Denver This letter was published in the Oct. 8 edition. Say it ain’t so, Sarah. You most admire vice presidents who’ve “gone on to the presidency,” as you told Katie Couric. You’d be a “maverick,” you said amid your winks in the vice presidential debate, if “the worst happened” to “the consummate maverick” John McCain and you became U.S. president. And now in Colorado, you wanna smear Sen. Barack Obama for what he accurately describes as “detestable events” that happened when he was 8 years old. Where’s your pal McCain’s plan for building up our economy, our schools, our health care system? And where’s his plan to do what Obama ...
