This news is probably going to irk some horror fans. Bloody Disgusting brings us word that decidedly non-horror Natalie Portman is wrapping her dainty mitts around one of the horror genre's sharpest blades, 1977's Suspiria from the Italian horror icon Dario Argento. Come to think of it, how more pissed could you be after we learned back in March that director David Gordon Green (of this week's Pineapple Express) would, in fact, helm the remake? Portman's own production company, Handsome Charlie Films, will produce the film. Is it me or does everyone have a production company nowadays? This doesn't seem to be shaping up well for the return of a film that has been described as having "the most vicious murder scene ever filmed." Will Portman be able to bring this remake some justice? Kate Hudson in "Almost Famous." You know that fun, kooky, artsy chick who turns up in way too many movies to rescue some poor sad sack from numbing loneliness and depression ... and just happens to be drop-dead gorgeous to boot? I have often held forth on my disdain for this character but never had a concrete term for her until today. Now, thanks to the Onion A.V. Club, I know exactly what to call her: the Manic Pixie Dream Girl . The Onion lists and dissects 16 archetypal MPDG characters, including everyone from the classic (Katharine Hepburn in "Bringing Up Baby" and Shirley MacLaine in "The Apartment") to the newfangled (Kate Hudson in "Almost Famous" and Kirsten Dunst in "Elizabethtown"). And, of course, No. 3 on the list is none other than "Garden State," a film so horrifyingly self-indulgent that its soundtrack ruined several decent indie bands for me. Jezebel 's Jessica Grose eloquently sums up my thoughts on Natalie Portman's character in the movie, writing, "Anyone who telegraphs their so-called weirdness so outlandishly is not actually weird, they're merely quirky enough to be vaguely interesting without having their own thing going on. They're completely mainstream but have one really big tattoo, or occasionally sing really loud in the shower!" Filed under: Horror , Casting , Mystery & Suspense , RumorMonger , Remakes and Sequels Well, since it seems that the very few out there who still respect what I have to say about movies, and horror movies in particular, either didn't read or didn't mind my mild admission that I only like Stanley Kubrick's The Shining , I feel a little bolder about bringing another piece of quasi-blasphemy to light: at this time last year, I hadn't seen Dario Argento 's treasured Suspiria , and when I eventually did, I was distinctly underwhelmed. Perhaps it was too dated, perhaps I was too jaded, but I was relegated to sitting back and just plain 'respecting' another classic of the genre. That makes me no more oblivious to the fact that it's sacred enough that a remake announcement is cause for cringing. Making matters a little less cringe-inducing, though (in my opinion), is Bloody Disgusting's confirmation that Natalie Portman is to star in the 2010 incarnation . She's smart, she's sexy... in short, this Oscar nominee could wander curiously around the halls of my eerie ballet academy any day. However, I still find the reports that David Gordon Green is attached to direct a little hard to swallow; I'm still coping with the fact that he directed the very funny and relatively mainstream Pineapple Express .
