President John Agyekum Kufuor of Ghana has announced that in his country, drugs and piracy will be treated the same, with former Narcotics officials set to go after counterfeit goods as well. “This insidious crime of product counterfeiting has become a global phenomenon; it’s no longer the canker of the under-developed or developing world,” president John Agyekum Kufuor recently said, “The developed world is also battling with counterfeiting products albeit at a scale lower than in our part of the world”. According to a Ghana News Agency (GNA) report , the Criminal Investigation Department of the police will begin to “handle counterfeiting and piracy crimes as drug trafficking” effective immediately. There are however, many glaring problems with this latest announcement. Drug trafficking has never been adequately stopped, in any country in the world, and certainly a drug such as heroine or cocaine should be easier to find then a counterfeited software CD intended to look exactly like the original. Narcotics crimes are federal offenses everywhere whereas piracy is not, except in certain circumstances. Another bandage on a cut that will never be closed. Permalink | Comments ...

Allen Risinger will be returned to Pennsylvania as a parole absconder after he faces charges in Branch County Circuit Court for possession, with intent to deliver, the drugs Oxycotin and Xanax. Coldwater Police Department Sgt. Joe Scheid worked with a confidential informant to buy the illegal, highly-addictive Oxycotin from Risinger, 43, at his Cynthia Drive apartment. Sgt. Scheid obtained a search warrant, based on the purchases, and found both drugs in Risinger’s pockets and apartment. Assistant Prosecutor Bill O’Grady said there were large quantities of the pills, and that the buys were between 8-30 pills. According to the probable cause affidavit, Risinger admitted he injected Oxycotin. To see the full story, visit extras.thedailyreporter.com. ...

The Beauregard Parish Sheriff’s Office set up a Narcotics Checkpoint Thursday night near Starks, Louisiana. Due to several complaints coming from the Fields area, the BPSO put together a joint operation with the help of Sheriff Ricky Moses and the DeRidder city police department. The operations utilized several BPSO deputies as well as the new Drug Interdiction team led by Detectives Dale Sharp and Greg Hill. Seven police units total were used for the operation in addition to 4 other units performing regular patrols. Sharp helped plan the operation and stated that it took approximately a week to pull everything together. “You have to work out personnel and equipment issues early on,” Sharp explained. “It’s definitely a process.” The Narcotics Checkpoint’s main objective was to get the Narcotics off of the street. “Anything off of the streets is not in the hands of kids or anyone else,” stated Sharp. The checkpoint proved successful early on as even before dark, the team found marijuana in a vehicle being searched. The team also quickly realized how badly the area residents wanted them there.  Kimberly Mcintosh lives near the area where the checkpoint was set up, and she felt compelled to stop by the officers and offer her thanks. “I am so thankful that you are out here,” she said with an enthusiastic thumbs up. Another resident who actually lived on the land where detectives and deputies were parked offered her help in whatever way sh ...

The FDA is considering making a recommendation that doctors get special education to prescribe strong Narcotics, despite the fact that it has no power to enforce such a proposal. FDA officials say they're most concerned about high-potency, long-acting Narcotics like methadone, fentanyl and some forms of oxycodone. In particular, they've noted that a mix of methadone and fentanyl patches has been associated with patient deaths and injuries from doctor misprescribing or accidental patient misuse. Under current DEA rules, doctors only need to show that they're licensed to practice medicine to register with the agency, which permits them to prescribe Narcotics. There is an exception if doctors want to prescribe buprenorphine as an in-office treatment for Narcotics addiction, which requires that they take eight hours of specialized training first. But they can prescribe even buprenorphine without extra training if they're using it to treat pain. Lately, however, the agency has been under pressure to address issues with these drugs. In addition to recommending training for doctors, and sending out alerts to doctors regarding methadone and fentanyl, the agency is considering new rules requiring drugmakers to monitor how their Narcotics are being prescribed.
