What if the environment could speak for itself? Would it say “ouch” every time a new plane took off from the tarmac spewing CO2e’s into the air. So I'm an early adopter of at least one annoying habit. For eight or nine years now, I've carried around a 32 oz Nalgene water bottle almost everywhere I went. Work. Play. Home. Travel. Clarion. Bathroom. I'd fill it with water twice per day, on average. This. Is. What. I. Drank. Out. Of. I remember going to parties and Jen telling me to put my Nalgene back in the car (I brought it with me out of habit, on accident, I swear!! I do have _some_ social skills...). I had to pry the Nalgene from Thor's cold, furry paws. I championed the Nalgene, because of its health benefits (hydration, hydration, hydration!), as well as the environmental and financial benefits (purchasing one kickass bottle every two years or so vs purchasing disposable water bottles wherever I went). Reasonable, right? Early adopter or no, I bloomed late to the health risks of the BPAs and the polycarbonite plastics Nalgene uses. I took the "sure, isn't everything bad for you in large enough amounts?" line. But post head injury, I've forced myself to become more aware of everything that goes into my body. And something that's bad for you in large amounts is probably bad for someone who drinks 64 ounces of it per day, almost every day, for the better part of a decade . Food containers made with common chemical bisphenol A pose no health threat, according to a draft assessment by the Food and Drug Administration. More than 100 government- and university-funded studies have linked BPA to cancer, diabetes, behavioral disorders, and reproductive problems, and an April report from the National Toxicology Program declared there was "some concern" about infant exposure to the chemical. But relying largely on two industry-funded studies that say the chemical is just peachy, the FDA found that "an adequate margin of safety exists for BPA at current levels of exposure from food contact uses." Advisers will review the draft report in September. BPA is found all over the damn place, from sunglasses to CDs to car interiors; it rears its head in can linings, baby bottles, and many food containers made of hard, clear plastic #7. Canada and San Francisco have banned BPA in baby products, and California voters are set to vote on a ban soon. sources: The Washington Post , Associated Press , Bloomberg see also, in Grist: Nalgene, Wal-Mart back away from BPA straight to the report: Draft Assessment of Bisphenol A for Use in Food Contact Applications [PDF] ...

By Maywa Montenegro Slate's Dan Engber has attempted to take down Wall-E in classic Green Room style with a piece slamming the film's connection between obesity and environmental destruction. Engber's critique is flawed in so many ways that it's hard to know where to begin ... For instance, he doesn't seem to believe that obesity really has much to do with being too sedentary or eating too much. To support this, he cites research saying that 80 percent of the variation in body weight can be explained by DNA. But what the research actually shows (and what his own colleague, William Saletan, has recently gotten right) is that 80 percent of the variation can be explained by DNA among individuals living in the same environment . If fatness is determined so strongly by genes, as Engber would have us believe, how in the world, then, is it possible to explain skyrocketing obesity rates in the past several decades? In sum, Engber thinks the Nalgene-toting eco-liberals are ridiculous (and disingenuous) in their linking of the expanding waistlines and climate change. It's a too-easy analogy, he says. Granted, I (most likely, we) are among those people Engber loves to loathe and could scarcely be dissuaded from doing so, but just in case -- in case there's been a fundamental oversight, a gap in education -- I feel like sending him a copy of Michael Pollan's In Defense of Food or Paul Robert's The End of Food . It's impossibly hard to argue, ... Source: www.freecycle.org --- 34 days ago
