Ban Takes Effect July 1 For Artificial Fats New York City-As chefs and restaurants around the city scramble to make last minute menu revisions, New York City begins its first of its kind ban on partly hydrogenated vegetable oil. This is a ban that is truly a pioneer in healthy foods and eating, and it follows a ban on smoking that New York City implemented in public. About a year ago New York restaurants were banned from using the unhealthy fats in spreads and cooking oils, but on Tuesday a total Trans Fat ban went into effect throughout the city. There is a short grace period where warnings will be handed out before fines up to $2,000 dollars will be accessed. Some of the bakeries and restaurants have complained that the Trans Fat ban hurts their businesses or makes their products turn out too crisp, but they as a rule have all been working to adjust their menus and recipes. The city has set up a Trans Fat Help Center, that is working to help different businesses and restaurants make the transition to Trans Fat free cooking and food. Overall the transition has been smooth, but it is still early in the total ban. ...

LEARN MORE NYC Trans Fat Help Center NYC Mayor's Office on Ban American Heart Association - History of Trans fats Injuryboard on mental decline and Trans fats IMAGE SOURCE: Wikimedia Commons/ Crisco in WalMart/ author : Charles Sporn Big Brother is watching you in your local New York City restaurant. In the final stages of a plan to eliminate all Trans Fat-containing food from restaurant menus, the plan goes into effect in NYC restaurants today. A year ago, spreads and frying oils were cited as carriers of the saturated Trans Fat that contributes to high cholesterol and heart attacks, not to mention contributing to the high cost of health care. Starting today, that ban extends to baked goods, frozen foods, and doughnuts. Foods that come in the original packaging remain exempt. The city health department will issue violations and a follow-up inspection will be conducted to see if the establishment is in compliance. Mayor Michael Bloomberg is careful to add that this is not an example of big government reaching into your plate. "We're not trying to take away anybody's ability to go out and have the kind of food they want in the quantities they want, but we are trying to make that food safer. If we can do it without Trans fats, you'll save . . . a couple of hundred lives a year in New York City," he tells Newsday . The ban reverses the decades-old trend of using the artificial man-made Fat with no nutritional value by manufacturers, i ...

If you live in the Big Apple or plan to visit there in the near future, you'll be happy to know that the Trans Fat ban will be in full effect by today, July 1. Exactly a year ago , all restaurants were required to eliminate Trans Fat from their cooking oils, margarines, and shortenings. This second deadline states that all prepared foods from restaurants, bakeries, cafeterias, salad bars, and food carts must contain less than .5 grams of Trans Fat per serving. Yep, by some FDA loophole, foods containing .5 grams can be labeled Trans Fat free . These various eateries do have a three-month grace period to comply with the Trans Fat ban; after that they can expect some hefty fines. Unfortunately, prepackaged foods sold in the manufacturer's original packaging at these restaurants, bakeries, etc. (like outsourced prepackaged salad dressing) are exempt from the ban. If so you'll still need to check labels on those foods. If you frequent a fast food joint, here's what you can expect: Dunkin' Donuts: Switched to a blend of palm, soybean, and cottonseed oil. McDonald's: Eliminated cooking in Trans Fat oil last year. Now their cookies and apple pies are Trans Fat free too. Burger King: In NYC chains, their fries, apple pies, and biscuits are Trans Fat free. What can you expect from other chains? To find out read more ...

Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger signed the bill into law today. The change will not take place immediately but will be phased in over the next few years. Trans fats are man-made fats that have been associated with an increase in bad cholesterol which leads to heart disease. Coronary heart disease is the number one leading cause of death in the state. "California is a leader in promoting health and nutrition , and I am pleased to continue that tradition by being the first state in the nation to phase out Trans fats," Mr. Schwarzenegger said to the New York Times . "Consuming Trans Fat is linked to coronary heart disease , and today we are taking a strong step toward creating a healthier future for California." By the year 2010 the artificial fats must be gone from baked foods and restaurant fare. A violation could bring a fine of $25 to $1,000. Food produced outside of the state and ...

Or San Diego, or New York City. It is happening in the lower income areas of South Los Angeles , where 73 percent of the restaurants offer fast-food fare. The City Council on Tuesday voted to place a moratorium on the construction of any new fast food chain restaurants because of the high numbers of obese residents. Yet to be signed into law, this is the first time a city has placed a moratorium that singles out any type of restaurant. The goal is to attract restaurants that serve healthier food , despite the fact that fast food is frequently more affordable than more quality, lower in Fat and higher in vegetables and complex carbohydrate foods. The city has a year to try and attract the new fare into the city. Fast-food chain restaurants may sue. After all, you can get a salad at Wendy's and McDonalds, they say. "It's not where you eat, it's what you eat," Andrew Puzder of Carl's Jr. Restaurants tells the Associated Press. 30 percent of South Los Angeles residents are obese, compared to 14.1 for the more affluent Westside area where 42 percent of the restaurants are fast-food.
