click to enlargelike most people who have an interest in technology i have been circling the hdtv islands for years like a hawk looking for its prey. $700 for a 28-30%94 tv of any kind just had a punch that i couldn%92t duck. i then saw the sanyo 28%94 wide screen with the integrated hdtv and regular tuners for $499 (sanyo ht28745) and decided that was a price that i could live with to upgrade my tv system. don%92t ask me why i am so stingy on the television price like everyone else my tv gets more use and lasts 5 times as many years as my car does. after getting this first %93low cost%94 jump into the hdtv world i am definitely going to upgrade my main tv to a 52%94 flat screen. i love the difference between regular tv and hdtv that much. for all my knowledge of electronics the education i gave myself before my first purchase there is still an %93in the dark%94 approach that i had to overcome and some disappointments that i will look to resolve in my next purchase and you will hopefully avoid in your first after reading this.first in the smaller tv that i got the 1080i (interlaced is what the %93i%94 stands for) is an incredible picture. if you%92re planning on going larger than a 30%94 then look for a hdtv that provides a 720p (the %93p%94 stands for progressive and is preferred for movies). the progressive format is better than the interlaced format so don%92t let the bigger number fool you. although you may see a bigger number on t ...

From William Bender of the Philadelphia Daily News via TrueHoop : TIM DONAGHY might be headed to jail, but he probably won't take any other NBA employees with him, federal Prosecutors said yesterday in a letter to the judge overseeing the ex-referee's gambling case. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jeffrey Goldberg, who is prosecuting the Delaware County native, told U.S. District Judge Carol Amon, of the federal court in Brooklyn, N.Y., that his office investigated Donaghy's claims of rigged basketball games and corrupt NBA executives and decided not to file charges. The investigation, Goldberg said, "did not lead to evidence of prosecutable federal offenses." [ Read ] Read more of my NBA blogs at BallerBlogger.com 4 Comments ...

From the Associated Press: SAN DIEGO -- A dispute over stolen drug money appears to be the motive for the murder of a Camp Pendleton Marine allegedly committed by two comrades, Prosecutors said. The announcement Thursday came a day before Lance Cpl. Christian William Carney and Pfc. Alvin Reed Lovely were scheduled to be arraigned in Orange County Superior Court on charges related to the murder of Pfc. Stephen Serrano, whose body -- in desert fatigues and boots -- was found in a ditch in San Clemente. Carney, 21, and Lovely, 20, were indicted this month on one count each of murder and making a criminal threat. They also face a sentencing enhancement for the personal discharge of a firearm. Carney also faces a charge of attempting to dissuade a witness. Both men have pleaded innocent. Carney, of Suffolk, N.Y., was put in the brig at Camp Pendleton on unrelated drug-dealing charges after posting $1 million bond for his release from the Orange County jail, said Marine spokesman 1st Lt. Curtis Williamson. Carney, an Iraq war veteran, was to be transferred to Orange County for arraignment. Lovely, of Dallas, is being held at the Orange County jail in lieu of $1 million bail. At the time of his arrest, he was listed by the Marines as being on unauthorized absence, a step before being declared a deserter, Williamson said. The body of Serrano, 21, of Sacramento, was found May 15 by a jogger. It was not clear whether Carney and Lovely had ...

The Bengals released Henry in April after his fifth arrest, and the NFL suspended him indefinitely. His case ended in a mistrial and Prosecutors dropped the charges, prompting Henry to seek reinstatement. “I don't think it would be productive for our football team” for Henry to play for Cincinnati again, Lewis said Tuesday. One of four men who helped a New Hampshire couple avoid arrest for tax evasion last year was sentenced to 20 years in prison, while another was sentenced to 2 1/2 years behind bars. Jason Gerhard, 22, of Brookhaven, N.Y., was convicted in April of helping tax protesters Ed and Elaine Brown, whom he brought guns during a prolonged standoff with authorities. He was sentenced Thursday to 20 years in prison for conspiracy to impede federal agents, being an accessory after the fact and possessing or carrying weapons in connection with a crime of violence. Robert Wolffe, 50, of Randolph, Vt., who pleaded guilty in January to conspiracy and accessory charges similar to Gerhard's, was sentenced Thursday to 30 months in prison. Wolffe had cooperated with Prosecutors and testified against Gerhard, Daniel Riley of Cohoes, N.Y., and Cirino Gonzalez, of Alice, Texas, at trial in April. Riley and Gonzalez were convicted. The Browns were convicted on federal tax charges in January 2007 and refused to turn themselves in to authorities when they were sentenced that April to five years and three months in prison. ...

Early yesterday morning, a woman stopped a police car in Smithtown, Long Island, claiming she was sexually assaulted on a Girls Gone Wild bus. Police ended up arresting the GGW crew supervisor Matthew O'Sullivan and charging him with first degree sexual assault \. Girls Gone Wild is currently looking for the wildest bars, and the crew had been filming a wet T-shirt contest at Nubar tavern. Apparently O'Sullivan asked a 20-year-old woman at the bar (not in the contest) to join him on the bus. From the NY Post : "She went inside with this guy just to see what was going on and, subsequently, she was assaulted," said Suffolk County Police Detective Lt. Robert Edwards, adding that other people were getting on and off the bus at the same time. "It was short of a rape situation, but it was a sexual assault," Edwards said. At O'Sullivan's arraignment yesterday, Suffolk County Prosecutors said he and the victim started touching and kissing, which she had no problem with. But things took a tawdry turn when he allegedly pulled down her shorts and underwear as he put his hands around her throat to keep her from running out. The victim's friends came aboard the bus in time and saw her struggling with O'Sullivan. The victim flagged the police cruiser down while her friends called 911. O'Sullivan pleaded not guilty and is being held on $100,000 bail or $200,000 bond. The bus was impounded. Another bar, The Crazy Donkey, where Girls Gone Wild had ...

According to the LA Times, Bruce Ivins, a government biodefense scientist at U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases, died in an apparent suicide . Sources say Ivins, who had aided the FBI with analysis in the anthrax-laced letter attacks in 2001, was going to be charged for the attacks. In 2001, letters with traces of anthrax were received by the NY Post and NBC News in September (after the 9/11 attacks) while another sent of letters were sent in October, to Senators Tom Daschle and Patrick Leahy. The letters are believed to have been mailed from Princeton, NJ, and five people died from infection. The government had suspected former Army scientist Steven Hatfill, calling him a "person of interest," but later gave him a $5.82 million settlement after he charged the leaks about the investigation ruined his reputation. Ivins, who worked at research labs at Ft. Detrick, Md., became a suspect after his unusual behavior after the mailings (the AP reports he "conducted unauthorized testing for anthrax spores outside containment areas"). Federal Prosecutors were reportedly ready to seek the death penalty in their case against Ivins. Ivins apparently overdosed on Tylenol and codeine; spokeswoman at USAMRIID said, "People here are pretty shook up about it," ...

Among the charges noted on former Governor Eliot Spitzer's campaign filings, there were two room charges at the Mayflower Hotel --the very same D.C. hotel when he trysted with an expensive hooker on February 13. Now, the NY Times says it's "unclear what nights were covered, or whether Mr. Spitzer stayed at the hotel" and Spitzer 2010 spokesperson said, "Every single hotel and airline expense in this filing, as in all filings for Spitzer 2010, was for a legitimate campaign purpose.” But given that Spitzer has the dough, why not just personally assume the charges at the hotel where everyone knows you cheated on your wife and essentially broke the law by having a hooker from NYC cross state lines? We're just saying! The Times also points out that the possible misuse of campaign funds for time with hookers is what federal Prosecutors are considering, if they decide to charge Spitzer. So far, Spitzer 2010 has refunded $1.48 million in campaign contributions. ...
