Last week I was in the PICMG booth at NXTcomm08 . By way of explanation, NXTcomm is the one event that delivers the entire ecosystem of network-enabled voice, video, and data. And PICMG (PCI Industrial Computer Manufacturers Group) is a consortium of over 250 companies who collaboratively develop open specifications for high performance telecommunications and industrial computing applications. The PICMG booth at the NXTcomm08 show included exhibits from 35 of or so of the consortium members ... many of whom are relatively small companies ... particularly when compared to many of the other exhibitors in show. Directly across the aisle was Microsoft ... Nokia and Ericsson were also at the show ... as were many of the other major players in the +115 Billion Dollar enterprise equipment market ... and the +30 Billion Dollar data comm services business. My point: The ecosystem of network-enabled voice, video, and data is very big business ... and many of the largest, most technically advanced companies in the world participate in this market. But many smaller companies also participate in this market ... including many small, embedded computing companies, like the ones in the PICMG booth. IndustryWeek.com   reports that 97% of all exporting manufacturers in the U.S. have fewer than 500 employees ... and that small and medium manufacturers account for 40 percent of U.S. production value. So as I looked over the show floor from the PICMG booth, ...

Cisco Systems said it will acquire Pure Networks, a Seattle-based home network software company, for about $120 million. Home networks using Cisco's Linksys products may already use Pure's software because it is part of the Linksys Easy Link Advisor supporting home network set-up and management. Network World reports that Cisco wants to add more capabilities to Pure's software as the nature of home networks advances from merely sharing peripherals on a broadband connection to actually connecting multiple networks and applications. Applications like content sharing or utility control within the home are on every service provider's wish list, but the home networking environment for now remains an area of great complexity, with  many different wiring options, a lack of interoperability and a lack of clarity about who ultimately will take the most responsibility for managing the home network. Telcos are in the mix for that job, and probably are the most suitable candidates, but the device, interface and support system complexity involved also means that companies like Cisco and Microsoft need to play major roles. Ruckus Wireless, the vendor that led the deployment of WiFi in support of IPTV services for about 140 carriers, has launched its new 802.11n MediaFlex 7000 solution system. The system is aimed at supporting the next generation in the residential IPTV evolution--multiple streams of TV content shared among devices throughout the home. Belgian telco Belgacom is the first announced carrier customer for the system. The new platform support 50 Mbps bandwidth, and uses the vendor's BeamFlex technology to steer signal streams around the customer home. "Everybody wants HD and whole-home DVR these days and that means 40 Mbps is table stakes," said David Callisch, vice president of marketing at Ruckus Wireless. Providers of wireline-based home network systems are always quick to allege that wireless systems can't support bandwidth and service quality demands, but Callisch told FierceIPTV that carriers' trust of wireless for support of IPTV content has grown--though they also are insistent about having vendors prove the reliability of their systems. "People will use wireless for this as long as it doesn't drop packets," Callisch said. "For our testing, Belgacom wanted us to run the system for 48 hours without a dropped packet." Sprint CEO touts WiMAX, calls for end of "walled gardens" : Sprint Nextel CEO Dan Hesse took the stage at NXTcomm in Las Vegas this morning to deliver a ringing endorsement of open wireless networks. “Wireless freedom is essential for a fresh flow of new ideas, new innovations, and new investment,” he said in a speech that should make Tim Wu nearly explode with pleasure. “No walled gardens.” As Sprint prepares to launch a 4G WiMAX network (as majority owner in the new Clearwire consortium), Hesse stressed that the network would be open to any application and any device—including cameras, traffic lights, and electricity meters. ...

VoIP application company BroadSoft announced that it acquired fellow vendor Genband's M6 Communication Applications Server and related assets. The product formerly was the heart of vendor VocalData, which Genband acquired during a buying binge it carried out over the last few years. Genband had acquired VocalData, Tekelec's Taqua unit and other firms, but has since spun off Taqua and now divested the VocalData product and assets. Genband more recently has turned its attention toward media gateways, femtocells and other products, while Broadsoft specializes in VoIP apps. The deal will help Broadsoft expand its customer base in the carrier VoIP applications market. The two companies also will partner on network transformation projects. Interview: Telstra CEO Sol Trujillo : We’ll someday see ubiquitous 4G networks, but there’s no reason to make consumers wait for a mobile broadband experience, according to Telstra CEO Sol Trujillo, who stopped for a brief chat with Light Reading last week at NXTcomm. (See Telstra CEO: Survival of the Bravest.) Trujillo says the regulatory environment in Australia isn’t one that encourages fiber-to-the-home investments, but he notes that there are many other things carriers can do to make sure they deliver a complete set of services to consumers — and hold onto those customers as competition heats up. ...

Technology to provide home networking connectivity over power lines may have been overlooked somewhat as companies have rushed to support Multimedia over Coax, HomePNA and wireless solutions. However, power lines running through the home remain viable home network conduits, and the HomePlug standard and other solutions are for all kinds of TV and broadband companies, not just utilities. At the recent NXTcomm trade show in Las Vegas, Comtrend was promoting its PowerGrid902, and Ethernet adapter that plugs into a home outlet and connects to an IPTV set-top box via an Ethernet cable. BT and and Telefonica are among the IPTV service providers that have used Comtrend's device, and the company is now looking to move in on the U.S. market. Meanwhile, another home networking vendor, Actiontec, recently announced an in-home automation controller that sets up PCs or mobile phones to control home network functions. Service provider XO Communications has started offering a new, extended-reach Ethernet over copper service to its business customers. Based on Hatteras Networks technology, the service is targeted at business users within 11,000 feet of a point of presence or collocation spot, and it is being offered at speeds ranging from 20 Mbps to 70 Mbps in 10 Mbps increments, as well as 200 Mbps and 500 Mbps offerings. The carrier also said it is upgrading its network to support virtual private LAN service to deliver Ethernet within service classes, probably by sometime next year. Ethernet over copper technology has been around a long time, and VPLS support is a more recent goal of service providers, but both moves show how carriers in the ultra-competitive Ethernet market need to look at new ways of extending services, increasing service variety and improving service quality in order to differentiate themselves. Maybe Verizon Communications President Denny Strigl was right when he suggested during a keynote speech at NXTcomm last month that the critics of U.S. broadband penetration should hush up. Market research firm Gartner reports that about 77% of U.S. households will have a broadband subscription 2012. According to gartner's projections, that will put the U.S. in a tie for 5th place worldwide (with Japan) for broadband penetration. U.S. broadband penetration by household currently is somewhere not far past 50%, and Gartner says wireless broadband technologies will drive much of the coming growth. Still, within the last year, we have seen many predictions for slowing broadband growth. AT&T last week reported broadband subsciber additions of just 46,000 for the second quarter, and industry observers are awaiting other telco and cable TV players' earnings reports to see if the trickle is happening industry-wide. Home networks, in which IPTV capabilities will play a central role, are likely to see future integration inside the home with technologies that currently allow smart metering of utilities outside the home. That integration will give residential consumers greater control of in-home energy usage, management and costs, according to ABI Research senior analyst Sam Lucero, who has authored a report on the subject. Such "home area networks" will connect meters to "smart thermostats" and other in-home devices like air conditioners and washer/dryer units. While a few utilities today manage peak demand by directly capping these load centers' usage, a HAN system would allow the homeowner to specify a mix of consumption and efficiency across a range of devices. Lucero highlights current and new wireless technologies, such as ZigBee, Z-Wave, 6loWPAN, and HomePlug Command and Control (HPCC), as having the capability to support such applications. Could all of those IP-enabled TVs can play a role as the interface to a home energy command center? IP Multimedia Subsystem adoption was again a subject of debate at NXTcomm this year, and while carriers and vendors on panels and elsewhere had kind and thoughtful words about IMS, suggesting that the industry has become more realistic about the IMS transition, some industry folk were more critical away from the microphone. At least, one carrier executive and one vendor executive told me they were "tired" of hearing about IMS, that IMS was not necessary for service convergence plays, and that there were too many other pressing market issues for carriers to adopt grand IMS deployment plans. Another vendor spokesman said he feared carrier customers would stall IMS pilot projects and tests to deal with broadband and IPTV competition and regulatory issues, and that amid confusion about the need for IMS, some carriers would fear they are being sold "an agenda, rather than a network solution." Yet, the IMS train keeps rolling, with hundreds of projects around the world in process, and it was clear from the discussions I had with several people who didn't want their names connected with IMS criticism that the industry is at least gradually benefitting from the intentions and implications of the standard. Earlier this year, we bemoaned the lack of proven multivendor interoperability as one of the roadblocks to a successful IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS), as interoperability is needed to extend the usefulness of the IMS platform beyond voice applications. However, the IMS Forum hasn't been sitting by idly and last month at NXTcomm 08, they announced the interoperability results of NGN Plugfest 5. ...

Ethernet service provider MegaPath last week announced that it is acquiring IP Merchant Solutions, a company focused on connectivity for credit card processors. MegaPath is in the process of creating an extranet service based on a multi-protocol, label-switching, virtual private network that will be dedicated to payment processing for retail and restaurant firms. MegaPath can pledge more efficient credit card processing for retailers that presently see processing delays while purchase information travels over the network. MegaPath has offered connectivity in partnership with IP Merchant Solutions in the past, but buying the company will make service support even more efficient and will give the service provider closer ties to a particular market segment. With the Ethernet provider market now so competitive, other service providers might want to keep similar strategies in mind.
