The Boise State men's Basketball program set one major goal at the beginning of the season—make the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1994. BSU lost 79-61 to Louisville in the first round of the Big Dance. Mission accomplished, with some big milestones achieved along the way. The Broncos shared the WAC's regular-season title and won the conference Tournament for the first time in school history. The team's 25 victories and 12 road victories also set school records. Coach Greg Graham, who completed his sixth season, is a candidate for a contract extension. Graham has one year remaining on his current contract, a five-year deal he signed after leading the Broncos to the NIT after the 2003-04 season. The Broncos will have a tough task in... ... Southern Illinois fans can't get too excited about the NIT—not after six straight trips to the NCAA Tournament. With three starters back from a Sweet 16 team, they did not expect to watch the Salukis play in the NIT this season. Those expectations turned out to be too high. SIU was overmatched early by a tough schedule and never recovered from a rough start. SIU couldn't close out close games, couldn't score and never put together a consistent stretch of good Basketball. SIU showed its potential in the NIT. The Salukis, without point guard Bryan Mullins, handled Oklahoma State 69-53 in the first game. With Mullins still out, Arizona State was too much in the next round. ...

Ohio State is one of the few Division I teams still playing college Basketball at this point in the season. South Carolina has named Darrin Horn its new men's Basketball coach, replacing the retired Dave Odom. Horn spent the past five years at Western Kentucky, guiding his alma mater to an NCAA Tournament berth this past season. The Hilltoppers won the Sun Belt Conference title to reach the field of 65, then beat Drake and San Diego before losing to UCLA in the West Region semifinals last week. Western Kentucky finished 29-7 this season and won at least 20 games in each of Horn's last four years. The Hilltoppers had a record of 111-48 in Horn's five seasons -- adding a pair of NIT berths to this year's Sweet 16 run. The 35-year-old Horn started his coaching career as an assistant at his alma mater in 1995 and has also been an assistant at Morehead State and Marquette. Odom announced his retirement in January and stepped down after the Gamecocks concluded a 14-18 campaign with an 89-87 loss to Tennessee in the quarterfinals of the SEC Tournament. ... Sports Forum ACC to Charlotte: Thanks for the hospitality The writer is the ACC's commissioner. Dear ACC Fans, I write to extend my appreciation to the City of Charlotte following this year's ACC men's Basketball Tournament. From March 13-16, the ACC and its member institutions enjoyed great hospitality while our teams competed in the 55th annual ACC Tournament that ended with the crowning of North Carolina as this year's champion. We are extremely proud of the many individuals who were the pulse behind this year's event, including the Charlotte Bobcats Arena staff, the Charlotte Local Organizing Committee, the Charlotte Regional Sports Commission and the Charlotte Regional Visitors Authority. These groups, along with the entire Charlotte community, all rallied around the Tournament and devoted an incredible amount of energy to its success. I sincerely hope everyone enjoyed this year's games along with the many special events that surrounded the Tournament. I know I speak for our 12 institutions, and specifically our men's Basketball teams, in thanking the entire Charlotte community. John D. Swofford Greensboro We Recommend MASSACHUSETTS VS. OHIO STATE 7 p.m., ESPN The National Invitation Tournament men's Basketball championship game will be missing a staple: South Carolina. A day after removing himself from the LSU search (knowing that Trent Johnson was about to take the job), Ford reportedly makes his way to Providence's campus, according to this Fox Sports report : Providence has offered its men's Basketball job to UMass coach Travis Ford, FOXSports.com has learned. Ford, 38, a candidate at LSU prior to a new athletic director being brought on board last week, was on campus at Providence on Wednesday afternoon. UMass was a senior-laden team (Forbes and Brower, anyway). So it didn't have a lot to gain by playing deep into the NIT Tournament -- other than positioning itself to lose its head coach. Two decades ago, Providence proved to be the launching pad for Rick Pitino's career when he took the Friars to the Final Four. Now, maybe one of his former UK players can try to pull the same trick, albeit in a vastly different college landscape. ... Source: www.kentucky.com --- 25 days ago
Travis Ford is leaving Massachusetts to take over the Oklahoma State Basketball program, UMass confirmed Wednesday. Massachusetts assistant athletic director Jason Yellin said athletic director John McCutcheon and several players would discuss Ford's departure during a news conference Wednesday night. Meanwhile, Oklahoma State said it had no announcement planned Wednesday for the job that opened April 1 when Sean Sutton resigned under pressure. The 38-year-old Ford turned down a job offer from Big East school Providence and had also previously been linked to an opening at LSU. A former player at Kentucky, Ford led UMass to a 25-11 record this season and an appearance in the NIT championship game, where it lost to Ohio State. Ford previously took over a losing program at Eastern Kentucky and guided it to its first NCAA Tournament appearance in 26 years. Kansas coach Bill Self turned down the Cowboys last week and signed an extension to remain with the national champion Jayhawks. ... Source: www.kansas.com --- 37 days ago
College Basketball's third postseason Tournament is here to stay. Rick Giles, the president of the College Basketball Invitational, said Thursday that the alternative to the National Invitation Tournament considers its first year a success and plans a similar event next year. In the shadows of the Final Four and the NIT, the CBI will crown its champion today when Tulsa (24-14) hosts Bradley (21-16) in Game 3 of the championship series. Initially met with skepticism as a Tournament to crown the 98th-best team in the country, the CBI has gained momentum at least in the cities where the games have been played. Tulsa drew its second-largest crowd of the season in Game 1 of the championship series, and Bradley had 9,014 fans -- about 600 shy of its season average -- on hand for Game 2. More than 6,300 tickets had been sold for the decisive third game at Tulsa's 8,355-seat Reynolds Center. ...

You know the routine... * It came as no shock that Mark Gottfried has not been, nor will be, fired. The relevant question concerns what will it take for Gottfried to get fired next year. Obviously missing the NIT will be enough to get him canned, but it's unlikely that we do that. The relevant question is this: If we make a legitimate run at the NCAA Tourney, but don't make it -- which wouldn't be a major surprise if Steele and Hendrix return -- is that enough to save Gottfried for another year? I'm leaning towards yes, but his seat will be extremely hot going into 2010, but regardless, that is the major question regarding our Basketball program right now. * I want to clear up one thing. Some people talk of, perhaps, Gottfried returning us to the "Glory Days." Some people are waxing too far nostalgically on things, and embellishing quite a bit. Do not forget, the "Glory Days" under Gottfried -- aside from one fluke NCAA Tourney run -- generally consisted of .500 at best conference records and sweating it out on Selection Sunday. And even when we did make the Tourney, we were usually beaten very early. Even the year we won the SEC, we were blown out in the second round. I'm not criticizing Gottfried, mind you, but some people have a warped perception of how good our "Glory Days" under him were. * I said all year long it was a definite down year for the SEC in Basketball, and I believe the NCAA Tournament proven that point.
