Here comes another batch of my musings from around the wide world of sports (thanks, ABC!). It's time for more Random Sports Thoughts! The Cubs lost 10-3 yesterday night. That's sad. Now pass me some more billygoat-black cat-Bartman stew! It's just too bad that the Cubs or Brewers aren't playing in Arizona. After all, they're used to big holes. Speaking of the Brewers, C.C. Sabathia finally ran out of gas. Now the know-it-alls are complaning that he's not money in the PLAYOFFS. Funny; it never stopped A-Rod from buying seventeen countries. The Rays won their first ever playoff game. Let that be a lesson to all pro teams; the Houstons Rockets-lose a lot-get high picks strategy does work! I've got a fantasy basketball league on Yahoo.com. I need ten more owners, so if you're interested (about one person), the league name is DDFBL, the league ID is 41368, and the password is nbapistons (yeah, I know that will turn off some, but I'm from Detroit, so I couldn't realistically do nbalakers!). How come the NHL season starts before the NBA season? Makes absolutely no sense to me. Tommie Harris of the Bears was suspended for the game against the Lions for violating team rules. The Bears got sad for a second... then remembered they're playing the Lions, and laughed. I'll be at Ford Field for that game Sunday (insert groans, laughter and dismay here). Chad Ocho Cinco said he ought to start drinking and acting a fool, since the Bengals won that way ... Source: blogs.squidoo.com --- 9 days ago

Brandon Dubinsky's power-play marker late in the third period proved to be the game-winner, as the New York Rangers kicked off the 2008-09 campaign with a hard-fought 2-1 triumph over the new-look Tampa Bay Lightning from the O2 Arena. Markus Naslund also scored for the Rangers, who were ousted in the second round of the PLAYOFFS last season by eventual conference champion Pittsburgh in five games. Henrik Lundqvist, a Vezina Trophy nominee in each of his first three seasons in the league, stopped 20-of-21 shots to get the win. Martin St. Louis lit the lamp for the Lightning, who made a bevy of moves in the offseason to alter a roster that finished dead last in the NHL in 2007-08. Mike Smith was strong between the pipes, making 39 saves in a losing effort. The game marked the return to the bench for Lightning coach Barry Melrose, who coached his first game since he piloted the Kings in 1994-95. Melrose replaced John Tortorella, who was fired in June. Steven Stamkos, the top pick in the 2008 draft, recorded two shots in 8:25 of ice time for Tampa Bay. ... Source: dallasmorningviewsblog.dallasnews.com --- 9 days ago
Fake TOD (or giving people what they want): -- On a scale of 1 to 10 -- with 10 being Reagan -- what is your personal expectation for Sarah Palin's debate performance tomorrow night? And what could she say, or how could she say it, to cause you to switch your vote to Obama or to McCain? Or are we media types making too much of this single event? Real TOD (or giving people what I want, since I'm all talked out on politics): -- I've long maintained that October is the single best month for sports in the U.S. NFL and college football are in full swing (with the added Texas-OU bonus around here); the NHL, NBA and college basketball get started; and, my personal favorite, the baseball PLAYOFFS leading to the World Series. Here's what ESPN needed - another new network. Come Super Bowl Sunday, the North American Sports Network, acquired by ESPN last year, will become ESPN America, the Bristol-based network announced Thursday. As such it will show the Super Bowl and 800 other North American events each year to 14 million households in 43 European countries. With its new title on Feb. 1, 2009, ESPN America will be only one in Europe "completely dedicated to North American sports," a press release said. As such it will broadcast major league baseball, NHL hockey and NFL games as well as NCAA football and basketball including in some markets the All Star Game, PLAYOFFS and World Series. It will also show the Super Bowl in a number of countries across the continent including Germany, France, the Netherlands and Poland. Many of ESPN's studio productions, including "Pardon the Interruption," "Around the Horn," "Baseball Tonight" and "College GameDay" will also be part of the mix. It brings to 24 the number of networks outside the U.S. owned in whole or part by ESPN, reaching viewers in 194 countries and territories. ESPN Classic has five networks - a UK, French, Italian, pan-European feed and South Africa) available in over 40 countries in Europe, the Middle East and Africa. ...

Josh Kidd enjoyed a taste of the American Hockey League last spring. He wanted more. Now he will have a season’s worth. Kidd, 19, ended his four-year Erie Otters’ career today by signing a one-year contract with Manchester, the Los Angeles Kings’ AHL affiliate in Manchester, N.H. He begins his first professional season on Saturday, when the Monarchs face Portland, the Buffalo Sabres’ affiliate, in Portland, Maine. “After being here last year and having a good run while I was here, this is where I want to be for further development,” said Kidd, a defenseman, who signed the contract on Sunday. “It’s time to move on.” Kidd had a goal, four points and a plus-9 rating in nine games with the Monarchs late last season before suffering a concussion that kept him out of the Calder Cup PLAYOFFS. He was the Kings’ seventh-round pick in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft. Kidd said he hopes his play this season will lead to a NHL contract. “There’s a lot of young guys here in their system,” he said. “If I have a good year and I can improve, I think I have a shot to sign a NHL contract in the next year.” Kidd signed with the Monarchs a week after his agent, Mark Guy, of Newport Sports Management in Mississauga, Ontario, said he expected to begin contract talks. Throughout the offseason and preseason, Kidd remained confident he would sign, even though the Kings had other contract issues to handle. “I never really went with a mindset of going back to junior,” ... Preface: I don't really have much to say on this one. I guess I'll start it off by saying the Buffalo Sabres jerseys remind me of a game of Rollerball. Which is strange because I've never seen that movie. Also, wouldn't it be neat if, before helmets, each player wore a different style of hat? Guy Lafleur was wearing a sombrero, Gordie Howe in a fedora, and Johnny Bower in a propeller-beanie—wouldn't that be sweet? On second though, I'm probably just delirious from nearing the end of the previews... The Buffalo Sabres have been an interesting team to watch. They were one of the NHL's most powerful teams coming out of the lockout, but their talent eventually caught up to them. Like any talented team (except the Detroit Red Wings), the salary cap ravaged the organization's ability to hold on to all of their stars. In fact, the Sabres almost lost three top players before the 2007-08 season. But as the cap was implemented, the "super long-term contract" was developed, which will help teams like the Sabres hold on to some of their more talented players. Roster Additions: Patrick Lalime-G (F.A.), Craig Rivet-D (Trade) Roster Subtractions: Steve Bernier-F (Trade), Michael Ryan-F (Europe), Jocelyn Thibault-G (F.A.), Dmitri Kalinin-D (F.A), Nolan Pratt-D (F.A.) How did 2007-08 go? 39-31-12, 90 points, 10th in conference, fourth in Northeast Division. 2008-09 Goal: Second or third in Northeast, make the PLAYOFFS (sixth to eighth in confe ... So here's the scenario. Bud Selig gets fired tomorrow and YOU are hired on as the commissioner to Major League Baseball. What changes would you make to baseball(if any) and why would you make them? My Changes Change # 1 - How the playoff teams are decided and to fix scheduling. I would get rid of the Wild Card and inter-league play and have a balanced schedule throughout the league. At the end of the season, the top 4 teams in each league would make it to the PLAYOFFS with the 1st seed playing the 4 seed, and the 2 seed playing the 3 seed. I would even at least really think about adding 2 more teams to the AL and even up the divisions at 16 teams each(assuming we have 2 markets that could support teams). I still don't understand why Las Vegas has 0 main stream Professional sports teams(MLB, NBA, NFL, NHL) and I would look there as expansion team 1. Expansion team 2 might be tough... Maybe Nashville? If that change would have been implemented this season, you would have the 1st round in the NL being between the Angels and the winner of a 1 game tie breaker between the Yankees and the White Sox, and the Red Sox and Rays playing. In the NL you would have the Cubs taking on the Mets, and the Phillies taking on the Brewers. Sorry Dodgers, no PLAYOFFS for you. There are 6 teams in the NL with more wins than the Dodgers. Change # 2 - The designated hitter. I know what I am about to say isn't going to go over well in an ... Source: www.boxxet.com --- 35 days ago

Some may feel that the NHL season doesn't really start until October 9. Truthfully, I feel it will be more exciting when games in North America begin—but the season is underway after two days in Europe. The Tampa Bay Lightning squared off against the New York Rangers in back-to-back matches in Prague, Czech Republic. Meanwhile, the Ottawa Senators got two early cracks at Sidney Crosby, along with the rest of the Pittsburgh Penguins team that eliminated them in last year's PLAYOFFS. Stockholm hosted their two encounters—and who makes an appearance? Mats Sundin. Of course, he has to remind us that he still hasn't made up his mind. Starting now, I will do my best to write a weekly hot-or-not piece as the season progresses. Fantasy hockey leagues allow me to follow every team and just about every player. The issue, if there is one, will be the time I have. My first edition won't have much, with only four teams in action this week. Here are some of the quick starters, and lousy finishers in the young season: HOT With Jaromir Jagr gone, Scott Gomez looks ready to lead the Broadway show. After picking up an assist in Saturday's game, Gomez potted the game winner along with a helper in Sunday's meeting with Tampa Bay. Two games, two points. Not bad for Markus Naslund —considering many have given up on him. He displayed some great stick-handling in both matches, and his down-low feed to Wade Redden for a power-play goal was superb. The Boston Bruins made Patrice Bergeron’s return memorable. Not so for Tony Granato. Bergeron, out for nearly a year with a serious concussion, had an assist and David Krejci scored the game-winner with 2:36 remaining, lifting the Bruins to a 5-4 win over the Colorado Avalanche on Thursday night in the season opener for both teams. "I couldn’t wait for this day," Bergeron said. Bergeron missed all but 10 games last season after he was driven face-first into the end boards by Philadelphia defenseman Randy Jones. He had to watch the Bruins’ march to the PLAYOFFS from the sideline, anxiously awaiting his chance to return. "I looked forward to this like nothing else," he said. Granato’s debut in his second stint in charge of the Avalanche didn’t go as he envisioned. The goalie he has backed, Peter Budaj, gave up five goals, and his promise of an uptempo brand of hockey was marred by passes that just missed their mark. "We did skate well, we did create enough offensively, but there are areas we can improve," Granato said. Blake Wheeler provided a spark for the Bruins in his first NHL game, scoring a goal in the first period. "It was a dream come true and you couldn’t write it any better," the rookie said. Tim Thomas stopped 35 shots, including a late flurry in the last 10 seconds. He even caught sight of Joe Sakic in the scrum, causing even more trepidation. "I know from watching him over the years that he can go anywhere from five-h ... Source: www.boxxet.com --- 2 days ago
