The Vancouver Canucks today re-signed young defenseman Alexander Edler to a four-year contract extension. Edler, 22, will see a significant raise over his current salary of $550K starting next season, as his new deal will be worth $3.25 million per season against the Canucks cap. That's again going to raise eyebrows and undoubtedly some complaints for paying a young player (in this case, one with currently less than 100 NHL games on his resume) that much of a raise, but it reflects the continuing trend under this collective bargaining agreement whereby general managers are willing to invest more on potential rather than on previous experience. And Edler certainly does come with promise, notching 20 points in 76 games with a plus-minus of +6 for the Canucks last season. With veteran puckmoving blueliner Mattias Ohlund eligible for unrestricted Free Agency next summer this move could also be seen as insurance in case Ohlund tests next year's UFA market, or perhaps GM Mike Gillis could be tipping his hand as to Ohlund's future with the club . 2 Comments ...

The Los Angeles Kings long contract negotiations with forward Patrick O'Sullivan ended Tuesday with the young forward inking a three-year contract extension. O'Sullivan will be paid $4 million for this season but over the course of the deal the cap hit for the Kings will be $2.95 million per season. By getting O'Sullivan under contract now the Kings avoided a potential contract holdout, something that's become a rarity in the NHL's salary cap world. O'Sullivan had a breakthrough performance in 2007-08, with 22 goals and 53 points in 82 games as part of the Kings "young guns" with Anzer Kopitar, Dustin Brown and Alexander Frolov, and is seen as a key piece of the club's rebuilding program. If he can post up similar or better numbers over the next three seasons that $2.95 million per will be considered a bargain, and in this era when teams re-sign young players to lengthy contract this one seems more prudent, although it was rumored the Kings were seeking a lengthier deal. It'll also move O'Sullivan to within one season of his eligibility for unrestricted Free Agency upon the contract's completion. He also missed all of training camp and pre-season and that could have an adverse effect on his play early in the season. History has shown that players who miss that preparation time struggle early and become susceptible to injury. Hopefully for O'Sullivan and the Kings that won't be the case. 2 Comments ...

Continuing a string of recent re-signings of key players, the Buffalo Sabres today inked right winger Jason Pominville to a five-year contract extension. Financial terms weren't disclosed but they should be available soon. Pominville stated late last week his intention to get a new contract in place with the Sabres prior to the start of training camp on Friday, a view the club's management evidently shared. It's not surprising the Sabres would lock up the 25-year-old Pominville, who has made steady improvement in each of his three NHL seasons, including an impressive 80-point performance in 2007-08, making him the Sabres second leading scorer (by one point) behind Derek Roy. The Sabres management took a lot of justifiable criticism in recent years for failing to retain their best players, losing notables such as Daniel Briere, Chris Drury, Jay McKee and JP Dumont to Free Agency. Since last summer however they've shown a willingness to retain their better young player, matching a hefty offer sheet from Edmonton for Thomas Vanek and re-upping Pominville, Roy, goalie Ryan Miller and forward Paul Gaustad. Keeping those key young players in the fold should go a long way toward improving roster morale as well as that of the team's loyal fanbase, who'd begun to question the club's committment to winning after losing those key aforementioned veteran Free agents.    1 Comment ...

Alex Ovechkin is hardly the first professional athlete to emphasize winning percentage above personal statistics, to maintain he's all about team, to insist he won't rest until he's earned a championship. "I want to win the Stanley Cup; that's why we play hockey in the NHL," he said during an interview at the Washington Capitals' charity golf event this week. "I'm always that way. I want to do everything for the victory." Standard stuff, right? Here, then, is what separates Ovechkin: He isn't just talk. This is an MVP who skates with the rookies, a $124 million man who thinks nothing of a two-hour drive on his night off to catch a little exhibition hockey, a league-leading scorer who keeps close tabs on what the club is up to during Free Agency. ...

Filed under: Blackhawks , NHL General Earlier this afternoon, TSN reported that the Chicago Blackhawks were taking care of their logjam in net by sawing off one of the logs -- in this case, by waiving goalie Nikolai Khabibulin . The veteran, who was in the last year of a 4-year, $27 million contract, joined the Hawks from Tampa Bay as a Free agent immediately after the lockout. Though the word is not yet official, our friends at Second City Hockey are hardly surprised: Doesn't really come as much of a shock to anybody, most likely. The situation from last night's 4-3 win over Dallas did seem a little fishy, as he was suddenly scratched from his start in favor of Niemi, and as the [TSN] article mentions, wasn't even on the bench. I'd have to think he will be out of a Hawks uniform within the next few days. Again, not much of a shocker, as it was all but impossible to believe that Khabibulin could possibly tolerate sharing playing time with Cristobal Huet, the Free agent goalie who arrived from Washington on the very first day of Free Agency when he signed a 4-year, $22.5 million deal , after stringing along the Capitals for a couple of weeks in order to jack up his market value. Not that there's anything wrong with that. So what's next for Khabibulin? Everyone in the world keeps speculating that the Kings ought to be doing a deal, but LA GM Dean Lombardi doesn't seem to be anxious to bail Chicago or anybody else out of a bad contract ju ...

Filed under: Maple Leafs , NHL General , NHL Free Agency , NHL Media Watch If there's been one story that everyone has beaten to death this summer, it's been Mats Sundin . No one is actually beating Mats to death, but talk of 'will he' or 'won't he' play this season and, if so, for whom has been all over the blogosphere. I don't think you can visit a hockey blog anymore without seeing his name mentioned. Filed under: Sabres , NHL General , NHL Free Agency This afternoon WGR out of Buffalo reported that the Sabres had signed RW sniper Jason Pominville to a 5 year extension, less than a day before the deadline imposed by Pominville himself on negotiations earlier this week. The 26 year old former 2nd round pick signed a 5 year, $26.5 million contract, in four of which he would ahve been an Unrestricted Free Agent. Given that he's been putting up nearly a point per game making a little over $1million per season, he might have been the best deal in the league. His interview from this afternoon with Schopp and the Bulldog is here . Again, as with the recent signings of Ryan Miller, Paul Gaustad and Daniel Paille, GM Darth Regier has stuck to his plan of locking up the talent that this team has grown from within, especially that core of guys who were so succesful together when they played at Rochester of the AHL. Getting Poms signed to an extension was nearly as much of a priority for this off-season as getting Miller signed. Aside from his being a natural goal-scorer with a deft touch, he kills penalties and is capable of running the point on the Power Play and is defensively responsible enough for that to not be a great liability. Most importantly, it's his chemistry with Jochen Hecht and abiltiy to both set up (53 assists last season) and score big goals (See the series clincher against Ottawa in the 2006 playoffs) that makes his place o ...

Canes forward Ray Whitney is heading into his 17th NHL season and his fourth with Carolina. Despite missing 16 games to injuries and illness last season, he was second on the team in goals, assists and points. Ask Whitney a question and he'll give you a straight answer. So here goes. Q: What do you like about this Hurricanes team going into preseason camp? A: "It's a fresh start. It's a lot of the same faces we had the last couple of years, but we've got some changes on defense that are exciting for us. We've got the same good three lines offensively that we had the last few years but I think our focus has to be keeping the puck out a little bit better this year." Q: One offensive guy who won't be back is Erik Cole. How much will he be missed? A: "It depends. You're always going to miss a player like that. But how much is Joni Pitkanen going to help us? I mean, that will determine how much we miss Erik Cole. "I think defensemen, when you look at the Free Agency market now, are very hard to come by and they come at a very premium price. I think if we were going to get a quality defenseman, we had to give up a quality player and we gave up a quality player in Erik. Obviously we will miss him, but it gives guys like Patrick Eaves an opportunity. ... "We'll certainly miss Erik and I'm sure he'll have a great season (in Edmonton) but he's also coming up to unrestricted Free Agency and who knows if we'd be able to keep him at the end of ...

General manager Doug Risebrough acknowledged he made a mistake by employing ten players in contract years last year. As a result, there was a lot of player movement over the summer. Rolston should have been re-signed during the previous off-season. Once it was clear he would test Free Agency, it was also clear he wouldn't be back. Risebrough tried to make up for his blunders (too many Free agents and not re-signing Rolston) by taking a stab at Marian Hossa , placing a bid for Kristian Huselius , and also making a play at a contract extension for Ma ...

by Bruce Ciskie Filed under: Wild , Western , NHL Economics , NHL Free Agency I don't like being the bearer of bad news, but sometimes it just can't be stopped. After all, I'm not smart enough to create the news. I just report it. In this case, the news is not good for Minnesota Wild fans. Michael Russo of the Minneapolis Star Tribune has an item up in his blog tonight that may be a harbinger of bad things to come for the Wild. The Marian Gaborik negotiations have hit a stalemate, and GM Doug Risebrough told me today he won't be signed by the Oct. 11 opener. "Not making any headway," said Risebrough, who last month said it would be prudent to sign Gaborik, the team's all-time leading scorer, to an extension by next Saturday's season opener. "I was trying to do something before the season. It's not happening. ... It's not going to happen by the start of the season." Asked if he'll react by putting Gaborik on the trading block, Risebrough said, "That, I'll have to determine." Might as well start packing the bags, Marian.   Permalink  |  Email this  |  Linking Blogs  |  Comments ...

Buffalo Sabres- Traded 2009 and 2010 second rounder’s to San Jose for Craig Rivet and 2010 7 th rounder.  This is a good move for San Jose, I think. They still need help defensively, and this is one of the moves that helped, along with the other trade, which I will discuss later in the article.  Grade- C+ New York Rangers- Jaromir Jagr leaves to play in Russia.  This will not get a grade, because it is nothing of New York making moves.  It is just an honorable mention to say goodbye to Jagr in the NHL, probably forever.  He had a great career, and I salute him. Phoenix Coyotes- Signed Matt Jones and Brian McGrattan.  These are two young players who have pretty good potential.  They will surely help the Coyotes out next season.  Grade- B San Jose Sharks- Along with the aforementioned trade, the Sharks traded Matt Carle, Ty Wishart, a 2009 1 st round pick and a 2010 4 th round pick to Tampa Bay for David Boyle and Brad Lukowich.  I think that San Jose lost this trade by a lot, especially since they gave up a first round pick.  Even though Carle had a bad year offensively last season, he still was great defensively.  But he will bounce back, so I think San Jose was wrong to trade him.  Boyle is somewhat overrated, and Lukowich is not the greatest player.  This lowers San Jose’s grade in my opinion.  Grade- B- St. Louis Blues- Signed Yan Stastny.  Stastny is not very good, but he will help the Blues slightly.  They have many more move ...
