Grand Old Partisan salutes Nathaniel Berry, born this day in 1796. Like many recovering Democrats of the era, Berry switched from the Party of Slavery to the Free Soil Party and then to the GOP when it was established in his state. The Granite State's foremost anti-slavery activist, Berry won a two-year term as Governor in 1860. He chaired the 1862 Altoona, Pennsylvania conference of loyal governors, which endorsed the Emancipation Proclamation issued by President Abraham Lincoln (R-IL). Michael Zak is a popular speaker to Republican organizations around the country, showing office-holders, candidates and activists how they would benefit tremendously from appreciating the heritage of our Grand Old Party. Back to Basics for the Republican Party is his acclaimed history of the GOP from the Republican point of view. CONCORD, N.H.—At first glance, New Hampshire looks like it's Barack Obama's to lose. Though George W. Bush won the state in 2000, he did so narrowly. In 2004, John Kerry won a slim victory here, making it the only state where Bush failed to repeat. Then came the 2006 midterms. The Democrats practically took over the state, unseating two Republican members of Congress, winning control of both houses of the state legislature, and returning their Governor, John Lynch, to office with 74 percent of the vote. They even won a majority on the state's unusual but influential executive council, when a septuagenarian probate bondsman named John Shea beat out a moderate Republican he'd lost to four times previously. (Apparently not sanguine about his chances, Shea left for a European vacation on Election Day. After some initial confusion, he was located at a Belgian hotel and notified of his victory via fax.)                                                                                                           The Governor of NH, Governor John Lynch has proclaimed October as "Parent Involvement In Education Month". This is as a result of a collaboration between NH State PIRC (Parent Information and Resource Center), The Parent Information Center (PIC) and the Department of Education .                     The Parent Information Center has been promoting Parent Involvement in Education for over 30 years. They feel that every child can do better when a Parent takes an active role in his/her education. Studies have shown that students with above average parent involvement rated 30% higher improvement than students whose parents were not significantly involved.   Being involved in your childs education is not as difficult as you think. There are the traditional avenues...attending parent teacher conferences, volunteering in the classroom, and getting involved with the PTA. But there are simpler strategies..... Let your child know that school is important. Ask questions about school and homework. Read everything that is sent home from school. Show your child that you are well informed. Encourage your child to read at home. Maybe cut back on TV and read with them? Interact with your child by sharing what you yourself are reading. Challenge your child to read the book....before seeing the movie When your child asks for help with homework...provi ...

DOVER, NH – It was supposed to be the day Barack Obama came out swinging at his rival John McCain . His campaign launched two new ads – one of which appeared to mock McCain’s age and his long career in Washington -- and held a conference call this morning to highlight what it is calling a new stage in the race, one in which the Illinois senator will challenge McCain’s attempts to claim the “change” mantle. But while he added a few new lines to his usual stump speech at a town hall here today, and made a point of laying out how he differs from McCain, especially on tax policy, the senator lacked the kind of fire expected after his campaign manager sent reporters a memo and surrogates announced the tougher tone. In fact, one audience member asked, on behalf of supporters and campaign donors: “When and how are you going to start fighting back against attack ads and smear campaigns?” The question was greeted with applause. “Here’s what I can guarantee you: that we are going to be hitting back hard – we have been hitting back hard – but we’re hitting back on the issues that matter to families,” Obama said. "I’m not going to start making up lies about John McCain.” The senator said he would not be “distracted or dissuaded” from making his case to voters, and yet some Democrats worry that his campaign has been caught flat-footed by McCain’s selection of a young, popular, female Governor who has energized their party’s base and drawn the ...

DOVER, N.H. - Gov. Sarah Palin took her message to the first-in-the-nation primary state Wednesday where she likened AK's tax policies and outdoor tradition with Granite State values. "We all love good moose hunting, I know that, and we both so enjoy our great lands: the clean water, and the fresh air, and the abundant wildlife and good fishing," she told about 1,300 people at Dover High School. Palin noted both states' opposition to income taxes, and said NH can serve as a microcosm for the rest of the country. "I hear here in Dover, there's home to two kinds of people: the fine people of New Hampshire and the fine people of Massachusetts who got sick of paying all those taxes," she said. While NH residents are familiar with the other three candidates in this race, Palin is a new face in a state accustomed to retail politicking. She used her first appearance here to remind voters of the fiscal discipline she imposed as Governor. "I know people back home in Alaska, they know that you don't have to tax people that much if you would cut down the federal government expenditures," she said. "We know that to get our economy moving again, we must cut that wasteful spending and balance the budget and keep taxes low so that Americans can keep more of what they produce, what they earn, so they can reinvest in their priorities." Palin acknowledged John McCain 's January victory in the Republican primary, which helped propel him to the par ...

Senator Joe Biden teared up during his debate with Governor Sarah Palin, and at my debate watch party we were riveted, touched, and applauding. We weren't the only ones. BuzzEdition , Susan, says, "Biden was more "Joe Sixpack" in that moment talking about his family than I have ever seen before. I'm touched and impressed." BlogHer's Nordette writes, "Biden choked up a tad speaking about his family. While I think it would not be in Sarah's interest to choke up as a woman (we know people would slam her for that), I do think that her answers, even her stories about her children, sound glib and rehearsed. Biden sounds more sincere.' Nordette brings up a great point- could Palin have teared up like Biden did? SharonMcP says, "it showed the pain of a loving concerned father, however if Palin had done it she would have been charcterized as weepy woman." Although Nancy says, "To borrow a phrase, there's no crying in Wasilla." When Senator Clinton teared up during a campaign stop, reaction was a bit more mixed. SisterToldjah writes, "Compare that with the lack of sustained media interest over several incidents of Joe Biden caught tearing up on the campaign trail. Yeah, several outlets reported on it, but you didn’t see the wall to wall, 24-7 coverage of any of the incidents like we did with Hillary Clinton’s show of her “softer side” while in NH." Jenny Decki says Palin couldn't have done it. Period. "If she had teared up, she would have ...

MANCHESTER, N.H. (AP) John McCain defied all sense of geography Sunday by going north and south at the same time. The Republican presidential contender visited the battleground state of New Hampshire to attend a NASCAR race especially popular in GOP strongholds down South. The twofer let McCain spend time in a state where Democrat Barack Obama has opened a lead and campaigned Saturday while simultaneously prospecting in a different region he is counting to be part of his Election Day base. The Arizona senator underscores his effort with a rally Monday in Jacksonville, Fla., another pivotal electoral state where recent polls have shown him leading Obama. McCain won the Republican primaries in Florida and New Hampshire this year. In a state like New Hampshire, no one knows better than John McCain that its direct voter contact that sways the electorate. Seizing the opportunity to meet with voters on a large stage in New Hampshire makes an enormous amount of sense, said McCain spokesman Tucker Bounds. Among those greeting McCain as he arrived in New Hampshire was Sen. John Sununu, who is in a close re-election race with Democrat Jeanne Shaheen, the states former Governor. Sununu did not endorse anyone in the Republican primary and has largely eschewed GOP events including the partys recent national convention in St. Paul, Minn. to minimize his connection to the Bush administration and any fallout from unfavorable national party trends ...

KY-Sen : Mitch McConnell reads Daily Kos! Mitch McConnell uses Daily Kos as a reliable source! According to the Courier-Journal's poll released this weekend, McConnell is holding just a one-point lead against (Democratic candidate Bruce) Lunsford. That poll was conducted from Sept. 22 to Sept. 25, during the week when politicians in Washington were considering their options after extreme economic turbulence. To bolster its dissent to the poll, McConnell's camp points to not only its own internal polls that paint a better picture for the incumbent, but also a different survey - this one commissioned by the left-leaning blog "The Daily Kos." That poll, conducted from Sept. 15 to Sept. 17, gave McConnell a thirteen-point edge over Lunsford. The campaign also questioned the credibility of the firm that conducted the poll, Mason-Dixon Polling and Research. Couple things. First, our poll was done two weeks ago. Second, Mason-Dixon is one of the best pollsters in the business, particularly in the South, and McConnell ignores this one at his peril. And finally...Mitch McConnell reads Daily Kos? NH-Sen : John Sununu is completely and utterly full of it . In this case, our man Sununu is claiming he Foresaw the economic crisis, proposed stricter regulations on Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, and that everything is Jeanne Shaheen's fault. The former Governor, of course, is quick to respond: Shaheen said it was important to "set the record straig ...

This morning, I had the opportunity to talk briefly with New Hampshire Governor Jeanne Shaheen about her U.S. Senate race this year, against incumbent Republican John Sununu. Unsurprisingly, the Governor is very gracious, articulate, and pleasant in person. She stressed the point that while polling has been overwhelmingly favorable for her campaign, she is concerned about Democratic overconfidence. She said that while New Hampshire has been trending Democratic in recent years, "anyone who thinks New Hampshire is a solidly Democratic state, doesn't know New Hampshire". She also noted that John McCain enjoys a strong base of support in the state, where he won an overwhelming victory in 2000 and was victorious again in 2008. Her polling remains very strong in the state, but the campaign seems deeply concerned that too many people are taking victory for granted in New Hampshire. Shaheen trails Sununu in the money race - she has outraised Sununu every quarter since she entered the race, but Sununu's war chest from six years in the Senate still leaves him with $3 million more on hand as of last filing. In addition, third-party organizations have already spent roughly $1.5 million in attack ads (Governor Shaheen called them "lies"). One of the biggest stories in Denver has been the flood of independent attack ads smearing local boy and U.S. Senate candidate Mark Udall; Shaheen expects more of the same in her own race. Current polling is ...

Other stops for Palin include Laconia and Salem. The Alaskan Governor shook up the presidential race when she was announced as McCain's running mate.
