A solid Q2 for Netflix , but Q3 outlook looks a bit light -- both revenue and EPS are below consensus. Meanwhile, the company raised full-year EPS guidance, now 2 cents above consensus. More to come. Join us for LIVE coverage of Netflix's (NFLX) call at 8:30 a.m. ET; refresh for the latest. We'll be looking for any update on Netflix's impact from the economy, which could have weakened its Q3 guidance; Netflix's streaming movie business, such as when it expects to add more content and support for Apple (AAPL) Mac computers; and perhaps an update on the advertising environment -- Netflix's subscriber acquisition costs were the lowest in its history as a public company. Is that because it was cheaper than ever to buy Internet ads? Key Metrics: Revenue: $337.6 million , vs. $337.6 million consensus, $334 million to $339 million guidance; up 11% y/y EPS: $0.42 , vs. $0.40 consensus, $0.33 to $0.42 guidance Subscribers: 8.41 million , vs. 8.3 million to 8.5 million guidance, 8.5 million Jefferies est., 8.44 million Lehman est. Lehman analyst Doug Anmuth remains upbeat on Netflix (NFLX) ahead of the firm's Q2 Earnings release before the open on Friday: NFLX will show continued strength in its core DVD business due to "healthy subscriber growth (+25% to 8.437 million) and low SAC and churn ($29.93 and 4.1%): NFLX will make a $65-70 million investment in digital this year. The investment is "critical for Netflix to ultimately be successful in the digital space and the benefits are not yet showing up in financials." NFLX's deal with Microsoft is "a key-although largely anticipated-win for Netflix in its efforts to gain much wider distribution of its digital offering. We believe Netflix must invest significantly in acquiring digital content in order to make the streaming service an attractive value-add for X-Box subscribers." Anmuth thinks that at least one more partnership is forthcoming but doesn't name the expected partner. Anmuth reiterated his Overweight rating and $37 price target and expects revenue of $337 million and GAAP EPS of $0.40, compared to consensus of $338 million and $0.41. ...

As promised , Netflix will start testing higher prices for hi-def , Blu-ray movies "very shortly," CEO Reed Hastings said on the company's Q2 earnings conference call this morning. Depending on how those tests go, the company will implement the new pricing across its subscriber base of 8.4 million people. Blu-ray rentals still make up a "very low," low single-digit percentage of rentals, Hastings said, but that should grow later this year and next year as cheaper Blu-ray players show up in stores this holiday shopping season. No specifics on what the price increases will look at, but we'd previously guessed it'll be a $1-$2 per month premium. We have wondered how Netflix (NFLX) would handle the fact that hi-def Blu-ray discs cost them more than standard-def DVDs . In March, we estimated that while standard DVDs cost the company around $18, Blu-ray discs cost about $23 -- or about a 28% premium. Jeffries analyst Youssef Squali thinks that Netflix (NFLX) will have a strong Q2 as a result of robust subscriber additions and flat subscriber acquisition costs. Squali, however, recommends staying on the sidelines given stronger competitive headwinds and disruption from streaming video. First, the good news. In Q2, Squali thinks subs will come in ahead of consensus: We're estimating subscriber count to increase by 270K for a total of 8.51M paying subs (vs. guidance of 8.3-8.5M). Churn should show a modest sequential increase to 4.0% due to seasonality, while acquisition cost (SAC) should remain flattish at about $29. Alas, ARPU (average revenue per use) will continue to decrease: We expect ARPU to continue to decline, reflecting the price cut and mix shift towards lower priced plans, at $13.67 vs. $14.09 in 1Q08 and $15.24 in 2Q07. In 2Q, Netflix continued to aggressively promote its service, particularly the $4.99 plan for up to 2DVDs/month. Squali thinks that with Blockbuster (BBI) no longer distracted by its Circuit City takeover attempts, BBI will redouble its efforts to hit NFLX by delivering content online: With Blockbuster (BBI, $2.42, NC) formally withdrawing its bid for Circuit City (CC, $2.12, Hold), we believe that BBI is turning its attention back on aggressively growing its online offering and launching Internet video delivery by year-end. We've seen anecdotal evidence of a pickup in BBI's ad spending over the past ...

If you bought Roku's $99 Netflix movie-streaming box , you'll be getting more content soon -- but not necessarily from Netflix. Roku tells Forbes that a software update later this year will let you stream video content from other 'big name' providers. Roku didn't say who these providers are, but we have some guesses. It's possible the set-top box could plug into Google's (GOOG) YouTube interface, the same way other gadgets like Apple's (AAPL) Apple TV and iPhone do. Or Roku might be adding a Web browser with an Adobe (ADBE) Flash plugin to its systems, which could theoretically play video off YouTube, Hulu, or potentially any other company that uses Flash for its video, like ABC or NBC. It could also be getting content from the forthcoming on-demand streaming video service from Amazon (AMZN), but we think that's less likely. Amazon's service will more directly compete with Netflix -- and this is, for now, at least, still the Netflix box. We're contacting Roku, and we'll update with any more information. Any better guesses? Let us know in comments or via our anonymous tip box . See Also: The $100 Netflix Box: A Decent Start, But Won't Change Game ...

Barron's reports that Needham has upgraded Netflix: Needham’s Charlie Wolf this morning raised his rating on Netflix (NFLX) to Hold from Under Perform, and lifted his price target on the Web-based video rental company to $25 from $22. Wolf said he has revised his model of the company’s business, and that his previous model “materially under-estimated the value of the company.” His previous model assumed the profitability of a subscriber was independent of how long someone has been a customer; but now he says that “the profitability of a subscriber increases with the length of time he maintains his... ...

Netflix (NFLX) is shutting down a unit that invested in low-budget films and documentaries intended to appeal to Netflix customers, according to Bloomberg . The unit, called Red Envelope Entertainment, invested in more than 100 films since it was launched in 2006, including " The Bituminous Coal Queens of Pennsylvania ," a doc about a small-town beauty pageant produced by Patricia Heaton. The idea was that since Netflix users tend to disproportionately rent critical favorites over blockbusters, Netflix would fund movies likely to appeal to its users. Netflix never disclosed financial results of the unit, which employed four people. The unit reported to Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos, who is remaining with the company.
