At the bulk of the spots on the field for the Trojan football team, players know where they're headed and what they'll be doing come the start of fall camp. The offensive line, though, is a little different. Hit harder by graduation and the NFL Draft than any other unit, the offensive line will be taking a different shape come fall. One week gone means another week closer to kickoff. In the first positional Preview, USCfootball.com broke down the quarterback position, which remains a little bit of a question after losing John David Booty to graduation and the NFL Draft. This week, we'll break down one of the strongest units in the country — the Trojan running backs and fullbacks. Go inside for mor ...

Note: I will be on 850 The Buzz with Joe Ovies on Monday morning (9 to 10 a.m.) to talk ACC football. Here's the pre-preseason Preview, moved over from the previous blog software, and bundled by division, for your convenience. • Atlantic Division • Coastal Division If you thought the ACC was bad last year, or the year before, or the year before ... brace yourself for 2008. The conference could be even worse, if that's possible. Attrition, either through the NFL Draft, graduation or suspensions, has hit the division champs, Boston College and Virginia Tech, hard. Traditional powers Miami and Florida State, who went a combined 12-13 in 2007, are no longer reloading but out-and-out rebuilding. FSU is doing so with the handicap of an academic scandal. The ACC, and Coastal Division in particular, is so bad that Duke could equal its combined win total since 2004 before October ends. But Duke, as the worst team in Division I-A football, is only a fraction of the ACC's image problem. The ACC's biggest problem since expanding in 2004 has been the lack of an elite, national-title caliber program. When FSU owned the ACC in the 1990s, they were a top-5 team every year and twice the national champion (1993 and 1999). The ACC hasn't won its BCS bowl since the Noles beat Virginia Tech in the Sugar Bowl for the '99 title. FSU was supposed bring the rest of the ACC up to its level. Instead the ACC has sucked the Seminoles into an vortex of mediocr ...

I forget to tell you guys about this yesterday even though I knew about it. Amid the signings of our Draft picks, the Saints also released a few players. Once again, the New Orleans Saints official website gently breaks the news to us by subtly hiding it at the end of a positive article. The Saints also made three other roster moves today, waiving CB Anwar Phillips, QB Travis Lulay and DE Jeremy Geathers. The staff over at The Advocate have come out with the ultimate Saints training camp Preview, putting all over training camp Preview to shame. They are Adobe Acrobat files in .pdf format but they are cool with lots of fancy pictures. It also has full schedule, directions, players by position, coaching roster and 2007 statistics. You should definitely check it out. Here is page one and here is page two. The Advocate also had an article about how all of the major NFL publications have predicted the Saints to win the division. Old news. From the Sun Herald we have, shockingly, a training camp Preview! They give us 10 questions the Saints will face in the next month. Of course most of them are the usual queries regarding Deuce, McKenzie, Reggie, Smith and Grant, cornerback, wide receiver, etc. Here are two of the more interesting questions. 6. Is Sean Payton on the hot seat? Nope. The 2008 roster is too talented not to succeed and Payton is too innovative not to figure out how to run this offense. Like Bush, Payton should be closer to ...

This is the fourth in a series of articles previewing the NFL season, featuring the AFC South.  Whatifsports.com will utilize our NFL simulation technology, statistical research capabilities, and up-to-the minute roster and depth chart information to Preview the upcoming NFL season.   Rosters and depth charts are up-to-date and as accurate as possible as of June 8, 2008. A schedule of upcoming NFL Preview content, including links to other previews that have already been posted, is located here .  For details on how we generate the results and the definition of the Absolute Record, click here . Indianapolis Colts (11-5) It may feel like it because they are always winning, but this is not the same team that the Colts keep running out there to win the division. Each season has some defections and each season the Colts find talent within their own limited player pool to step up and fill the void. 2008 is no different. This year, some of Peyton Manning's weapons from the past few seasons are gone or banged-up and a lot of the depth on defense moved on, yet there are several great talents ready to step up. The Colts average 29.1 points per game (#3 in the NFL) and allow 20.5 points (#8) against a schedule featuring nine games against 2007 playoff teams. Absolute Record: 15-1 Most Significant Newcomer: Mike Pollak, OL - This is probably the most difficult team to pick of any in the league. The Colts build their teams from the Draft up a ...

8. Larry Johnson , Kansas City: After compiling an NFL record 416 rushing attempts in 2006, Johnson missed the last eight games of 2007 season with a foot injury. Combined with his training camp holdout, a previous heavy workload, a rebuilding offensive line and a new inexperienced starter at quarterback, Johnson was doomed to post a subpar season. In his favor, he's only had two seasons of a full workload, so at age 28 he still has the potential to post an excellent season once again. He may not reach 2,000 total yards like he did in '05 and '06, but he can still be a productive top-10 running back. In addition, Johnson's schedule is much easier after facing the tough run defenses of the AFC South and NFC North last season. This year, he meets the softer defenses of the Miami's and Jets' of the AFC East and the Atlanta's and New Orleans' of the NFC South. It's been a few days since my wide receiver  Preview, but now I'm back on track with the next edition of the Missouri Tigers position previews. It's never easy to replace an NFL Draft picks, but the Missouri Tigers look to do just that at the tight end position. However, some think that the incumbent, Chase Coffman, will be even better then Martin Rucker, so the position will likely see little-to-no drop off. TIGHT END: As mentioned, Coffman already has a lot of experience and notoriety, both nationally and in Columbia. His 6'6'' frame and great leaping, and running ability has some are projecting him as a better pro prospect then Martin Rucker. He already has 20 TD in Tiger Black and Gold, a school record. While Coffman will be a primary target for the first time in his career, backup Jon Gissinger will, also be seeing a lot of minutes for the first time in his days at Mizzou. His size and tutelage for the past couple seasons will make him a solid option.  True freshman Andrew Jones, a Coffman clone, might see the field this fall. Another option is WR-TE hybrid Wes Kemp, who has a strong build with lightning speed. Kemp will almost certainly forgo a red shirt, while Jones probably will as well. As long as Coffman, who has had injuries in the past, can stay healthy, this unit will be very fun to watch. Coffman's reckless and physical style of play will help Tiger fans forget about Rucker, and Gissinger should contribute as well. W ...

Somewhere, I saw panic about the Rams reaching a deal with Chris Long. And I suppose to some extent I understand. Out of the top four picks from this year's Draft, he's the only one who hasn't signed. Some thoughts on that. The top overall pick, Jake Long, signed ahead of the Draft, if you'll recall. Matt Ryan, the third overall pick, signed a tricked out deal to become the richest rookie in the Draft class and one of the best paid QBs in the league. That complicates contract negotiations which are usually based on the order of the Draft. Still, word is that Long wants to sign and will get a deal more like the other Long's than Ryan's. And a little bit of history for you. Last year's first round pick, Adam Carriker, was the last of the Rams 2007 Draft class to ink a deal. He came to terms with the Rams, a deal appropriate to his Draft position, on July 27, 2007, the eve of training camp. So don't be surprised if Long and some of the other picks aren't signed until much later in the month, in the midnight hour, relatively speaking, before camp gets under way. Now, a few link-ys: A Preview that doesn't like the Rams chances this season, mostly because they foresee a 1-6 start to the season.  Chris Long got some media quotes in at the NFL's rookie symposium, and many feel that he already has an NFL work ethic.  Billy Devaney's thoughts on where Keenan Burton fits in.  Drew Bennett is 100% healthy heading into camp and expects to rebound u ...

Double-T Nation News: I worked quite a bit over the weekend, trying to get ahead so that I can post with a little more frequency.  I've finished the UMass Preview, so look for it later this morning.  Tomorrow, I will post an interview with UMass Football Blog so we can all get to know the Minutemen a little bit better. I've also got a couple of other things in the works, as well as the return of community projections. Texas Tech Football: ESPN's Paul Kuharsky writes about the possibility of a number of juniors testing the NFL Draft in April of 2009 because of a lack of a rookie pay scale and surprise, surprise, Mike Leach had a thought or two about players leaving early: "I don't think that would happen, because if they leave early, they're idiots because the scale would go up [the next year]," he said. "They need to remember that the success rate of players who leave early is dismal. Historically, guys lose money if they come out early, and a lot of these agents are nothing but loan sharks. And all these players who would be so worried about how much money they're going to make just need to be worried about making the team." Tell 'em how you really feel Mike. Never one to mince words, I would imagine that Mike has a certain motivation to ensure that one of his better players doesn't come out early, that one player being Mr. Crabtree. Although historically it may be detrimental for juniors, and in Mr. Crabtree's situation, a Draft ...

Big Dave/Phinfever MySpace In my obsession with Fantasy Football, I bought the new NFL.COM Fantasy Football 2008 Preview. Sure, it is a little too early to put these in print, and really, the best evaluations are the ones that are online as they change with the changes. Still, I’ve got to do a little reading about the upcoming FFL season. Below is an article in the magazine (sure, I have to type it out for you) that will make you better during the Fantasy Football season. By the way, if you’ve been with the site for a while you will not be surprised by our obsession with Fantasy Football. We have an annual league (you can take a look at it in the FFL links in the downloadable Phinfever Browser Toolbar), and we will have several Yahoo leagues that anyone can be a part of. So, enjoy! Dave Draft Day Do 's And Don’t s DO be sure to understand your league scoring rules to make sure you get value players appropriately. If QBs get 6 points per TD pass (as on NFL.com), you might want to Draft one earlier than in a league where they only get 4 points. DO decide if you will fill empty positions or just choose the best available player. This will let you know whether to take that third RB in Round 3 if there are no appealing QBs or WRs left. DON'T take too many players from the same team. DO try to get the backups for your expected starters, but DON'T waste a high prick on them (if you get Adrian Peterson in the first round, you may not want to u ...
