Posted by ESPN.com's Kevin Seifert  From an NFC North perspective, the most telling nugget within ESPN.com's July power rankings is that 80 percent of the voters considered Green Bay the team to beat. Not necessarily surprising, just revealing. ESPN.com's voting took place long after the Packers' standoff began with quarterback Brett Favre, and seems to reflect a pretty rational view: Even without Favre, the Packers have a young, athletic and deep roster. Their offense is well-suited for a quarterback transition, with a deep crew of receivers and running backs, and Aaron Rodgers has taken an ideal path in terms of quarterback development. A return by Favre, unlikely as it might be, certainly wouldn't hurt the Packers' competitiveness. By ESPN.com's preseason reckoning, the NFC North will send two teams to the playoffs -- the Packers and Minnesota Vikings. A slew of offseason additions in Minnesota inspired a pair of voters to place the Vikings ahead of the Packers in the overall rankings. In general, however, the Vikings will have to demonstrate that their new toys -- receiver Bernard Berrian and defensive end Jared Allen , chief among them -- can assimilate quickly into the program. That thought process meshes with my general feeling about the Vikings: Everything looks good on paper, but it's only fair to be cautioned by the multiple examples of teams that fall short of expectations generated by high-profile veteran additions. The Bears have bolstered their veteran presence at running back, and they just might make the Lions pay for giving up on that back. Oh, and have you really seen the Brett Favre situation covered from all angles? In Green Bay, they are paying close attention to every comment about Favre, even from those outside the football arena. ... Source: www.scout.com --- 12 days ago

Same deal as the AFC, but this one has the Super Bowl bundled with it. NFC East- 1. Cowboys- Quite honestly, the Cowboys look to be the best team in the NFC this year. Romo's coming off another good season. Owens, Crayton, and a non-injured Glenn gives him an outstanding receiver corps. Barber and Jones should give Dallas a good one-two punch run attack. Witten is one of the best TE in the league. The Cowboys have a fairly solid O-Line. It'll be hard for anyone to get past it. The Boys have a fairly average D-Line and is their biggest weakness on defense. Ware, Thomas, and Ellis make up a very good LB unit. Dallas has a great secondary this year. If Jones can stay out of trouble, he could have a great turn-around season. With Newman, Jones, and Henry; the Boys will have a top-10 secondary. Hamlin's coming the best season of his career. The Cowboys are the team to beat this year. Record: 14-2 2. Giants- The Giants just barely edge the Eagles for second in the division. It'll be interesting to see which Eli the Giants get. The Eli that plays average football, or the Eli that plays amazing football in the postseason. Burress, Toomer, and Manningham should give Manning plenty of targets. The Giants had a good rushing attack last year, and look to be even better. New York has a pretty good O-line, but not great. It'll be interesting to see how the Giants pass rush will do without Strahan. Osi should be just as good this year. Ki ... Source: ballhype.com --- 12 days ago

Welcome to News From Around the Nation, where it's all SportsBlog Nation, some of the time. If you'd like to see what's going on in the NFC South with our awful, tax-evading, drunken rivals division mates, keep reading after the jump. NFC South: Carolina Panthers: From Cat Scratch Reader, we have our first of many reports about Brett Favre going someplace. Will he end up in Carolina or Tampa Bay, or will he join the New England Patriots as a strong safety? Golly! I'm practically wetting my pants in anticipation! What does CSR think? My wife for one would love this move (She loves Brett). The rest of us are like “Why in the world would the Panthers be interested in Brett Fa v re ?” Forget asking why he might even consider coming here, but it just doesn’t fit the Panther philosophy or 2008 game plan at all. I’m positive they are content with Jake’s rehab and expect him to perform at a high level in 2008. No offense to my good buddy Jaxon over at CSR, but I'd rather have Favre than a possibly decrepit Jake Delhomme and Matt Moore, which I'm pretty sure is a stage name. Then again, once you factor in the fact that Favre has become an almost guaranteed source of three months of angry, lunacy-inspiring offseason hell, I'm not sure it's such a great idea either. I think the Panthers will be a lot better next season, too, if for no other reason than that they jettisoned the walking corpse of DeShaun Foster. It doesn't make a lot of s ...

Written by Anthony Hall Back to IGN’s sim. Not only did the Vikings win the division — they received a first round bye in the playoffs.
