SAN DIEGO – I landed in San Diego last night for what I’m hoping will be a relaxing week of vacation with my wife and daughter. We’ll head to Sea World soon and then later tomorrow we’ll make the drive to Los Angeles where I’ll take in the Pumps Event (charity dinner on Thursday night and the Collegiate Business Conference on Friday) for the first time and then spend a few days at Disneyland. I received rave reviews after the event from several coaches last year and I was asked to participate in a panel with other national writers and former college coaches on dealing with the media. Anyway, that’s my excuse if this blog takes a significant hit in terms of updates over the next week or so. MAKING UP FOR LOST TIME After speaking to Providence point guard Sharaud Curry, I decided to come up with a list of some of the top players in the country who will be trying to make up for lost time this season: Ron Steele – The Alabama Crimson Tide point guard took the entire season off to get his knees back to 100 percent. A.J. Price – There’s no one whose injury means more to a team’s Final Four hopes than Price’s knee. He suffered a torn ACL in the first round of the NCAA tournament – a loss to San Diego. Eric Devendorf & Andy Rautins – The Syracuse duo missed the entire season and it’s no surprise that the Orangemen didn’t make the Big Dance. The pair give Jim Boeheim perimeter scoring and also the depth the ‘Cuse was lacking a year ago. Tas ...

Does the name Buzz Bissinger mean anything to you? Unless you follow the coming and goings of sports journalism figures (and if you do with any regularity, you need a hobby), the name might not ring a bell. So to bring you up to speed, Bissinger wrote the highly-acclaimed Friday Night Lights as well as other books on sports and politics.  More recently, though, he attracted attention for being the antagonist in a television panel discussion on sports blogging with former Deadspin editor Will Leitch, who was the target of Buzz' profanity-laced ire. But in an even more recent incident, Bissinger -- who also wrote a book featuring Cardinals' manager Tony La Russa -- is beginning to look more and more like journalism's equivalent of Billy Martin.  After scuffling verbally with Leitch on TV, and following that with an apology. Bissinger literally scuffled with security at the College World Series in Omaha where he ran afoul of NCAA officials over the issue of a camera. The story appeared in the New York Times on Saturday and elsewhere on the Internet (I first spied it on The Big Lead but I'm supposing others have had it by now) but if haven't seen it, here's a sample and a link . An argument ensued, and I openly admit it got heated. An N.C.A.A. official in an orange shirt was called over. He had one of those little faces born in contempt, and he wasn’t happy. He curtly told me to take my camera bag back to my car. I told him I didn’t have ...

While the lacrosse season raged on we announced our annual E-Lacrosse Dye-Off right here on the Re: Lax blog, and like we promised, we are featuring the winners here, as well. This was easily our best field ever with more entries, a higher level of difficulty and six worthy champions! We usually pick a first, second and third prize and we had planned to this year, as well. But we knew there would be trouble when we received more than 160 entries, 50 of which merited consideration for prizes. We got the finalists down to ten and literally voted fifteen times in between arguing. Not once did 50 percent of our panel vote for any one entry as No. 1. There were six entries that could have won and kept splitting all the votes, so we decided to double the prizes, eliminate the other four and vote again with just the final six in the mix. We got lucky and while each entry still got a No. 1 vote, we had enough criteria and differentiation in the 2nd through 6th place voting to fairly award two first-place prizes, two second-place prizes and two thirds. We were pleased because none of these six kids could be allowed to go home without a prize. You will see below why it was impossible for us to pick one winner. The prizes in our annual cult classic, as always, were provided by Baltimore’s own STX Lacrosse. The three (six now) head and shaft combinations are some of the most popular in the college game and got a lot of attention at the NCAA final ...

Well, it wasn’t a runaway victory ala Wisconsin 2007, but Penn State's student section was deemed the best in college football by a panel of ESPN contributors. I totally stole this from NCAA's website, but I haven't seen it posted anywhere and highly recommend that you all read it thoroughly before you throw a beer bottle at your television because of such a ludicrous officiating blunder that actually is just yet another rule change.   I’d love to hear everyone’s  thoughts on these new rules because I certainly think some of them are silly and will cause more harm than good this season for teams and officials . 2008 NCAA Rules Changes From the NCAA NCAA FOOTBALL RULES COMMITTEE ACTION FOR 2008 Rogers Redding Secretary-Rules Editor NCAA Football Rules Committee Introduction In making its recommendations for rules changes in 2008, the NCAA Football Rules Committee retained its focus on player safety and consistency of making the ball ready for play. The committee also has slightly expanded the types of plays allowable for instant replay review, broadened the head coach’s ability to challenge a ruling, and made some changes in the administration of the game. The changes summarized below have been adopted by the NCAA Football Rules Committee and approved by the Playing Rules Oversight panel (PROP), which has jurisdiction over the rules committees for all sports . Rules Changes 1. Player Safety. Helmet Crown and Defenseless Players (Rule 9-1-3). The committee has refined the rules regarding the use of the helmet as a weapon and the targeting of defenseless players. (The Points of Emphasis se ...

Washburn (38-4, 12-1 MIAA), an NCAA Division II semifinalist last season, was ranked behind only defending national champion Concordia-St. Paul (Minn.). The defending MIAA champion, Truman (36-6, 12-1 MIAA), was right behind the Lady Blues with a No. 3 national ranking. Emporia State (27-9, 10-3 MIAA) was ranked No. 11, with Central Missouri (31-7, 9-4 MIAA) coming in at No. 13 and Pittsburg State (26-9, 8-5 MIAA) getting ranked 17th by the panel of 36 coaches. MIAA newcomer Nebraska-Omaha (17-9, 8-4 North Central Conference), a regional qualifier last season, was the only other conference school to receive votes on at least two ballots. The only other school from the South Central Region, West Texas A&M from the Lone Star Conference, was ranked fifth, while the LSC's Central Oklahoma also received votes. Just one conference — the Northern Sun Intercollegiate, from which Concordia-St. Paul hails — had as many schools in the top 25 as the MIAA (CUSP, No. 8 Minnesota-Duluth, No. 12 Southwest Minnesota State, No. 19 Minnesota State-Mankato and No. 20 Augustana [S.D.]). Filed under: Syracuse , Big East , NCAA Basketball Campus , NCAA Basketball Police Blotter A quiet, nasty story that stayed below the regular media in the spring, was that several Syracuse basketball players were involved in a sexual assault investigation. Eventually it was revealed that there was an investigation involving starting point guard Jonny Flynn and bench players Scoop Jardine and Rick Jackson. Ultimately the Onondaga County Grand Jury hearing the charges, found that the allegations did not rise to the standards of criminal activity and the matter was dismissed. That was only the criminal side of things. The next phase was going before the Syracuse University Judicial Hearing Board . This was much like the judicial review panel at Pacific University that suspended three players for the year after the alleged victim declined to file charges of sexual assault. The judicial review panel at many universities have come under fire for the way they conduct the hearing . You have already been cleared of all charges in a government court room by a jury of your peers. Still, you now have to stand in front of a panel of strangers who will not take that legal decision into account and will determine your fate based on not only the words of your accuser but on yours as well. You will not be allowed to have a lawyer stand next to you and advise you on legal issues or your rights. If you don't testify, it's practically an admission o ...

Filed under: Georgia , USC , ACC , NCAA FB Media Watch , General CFB Insanity The Georgia Bulldogs opened the college football season as number one overall for the first time in the history of their school. It didn't last very long. Like, until this afternoon . Blame USC. Blame the pollsters. Or blame the athletic department for scheduling Georgia Southern. "We realize that rankings so early in a season are certainly fluid. But rankings do help establish a pecking order for things later in the season," USC coach Pete Carroll said in a statement. "As for moving into the No. 1 spot, it's nice to know that people think highly of our team." The voting was close. USC received 21 first-place votes and 1,539 points from the 65-member media panel. Georgia had 20 first-place votes and 1,506 points. Ohio State got 15 first-place votes and 1,497 points. "I'd say we've evolved as pollsters," said Stewart Mandel of SI.com, who moved USC up to No. 1. "In the past, voters just kind of automatically moved teams up and kept teams where they were if they won." That's not to over-qualify Virginia as a team that deserves that much respect (sorry; no real offense intended but the ACC will take it from everyone all week long and like it whether they want to or not) but the truth of the matter, which Mandel also pointed out, is that pollsters no longer want to reward teams heavily for playing cream puffs early on in their schedule. So, lesson: play a to ...
