While the Lacrosse season raged on we announced our annual E-Lacrosse Dye-Off right here on the Re: Lax blog, and like we promised, we are featuring the winners here, as well. This was easily our best field ever with more entries, a higher level of difficulty and six worthy champions! We usually pick a first, second and third prize and we had planned to this year, as well. But we knew there would be trouble when we received more than 160 entries, 50 of which merited consideration for prizes. We got the finalists down to ten and literally voted fifteen times in between arguing. Not once did 50 percent of our panel vote for any one entry as No. 1. There were six entries that could have won and kept splitting all the votes, so we decided to double the prizes, eliminate the other four and vote again with just the final six in the mix. We got lucky and while each entry still got a No. 1 vote, we had enough criteria and differentiation in the 2nd through 6th place voting to fairly award two first-place prizes, two second-place prizes and two thirds. We were pleased because none of these six kids could be allowed to go home without a prize. You will see below why it was impossible for us to pick one winner. The prizes in our annual cult classic, as always, were provided by Baltimore’s own STX Lacrosse. The three (six now) head and shaft combinations are some of the most popular in the college game and got a lot of attention at the NCAA final ...

Steve Goins has already gotten a taste of life in College Park. The Maryland power forward recruit spent four weeks on campus earlier this summer as part of the university’s Scholastic Transitions Educational Program (S.T.E.P.). Goins took courses in English, math and study skills, while also learning the ins and outs of campus living. “It was like a [pre-college program to] get you acclimated to how life is going to be,” Goins said. “I met a lot of other athletes, not just basketball, but from Lacrosse, baseball, football, every other sport. I think it was [very beneficial]. It helped out a lot.” Goins will be back in College Park before the end of the month. He’s still waiting to be approved by the NCAA Clearinghouse. Once that approval comes, the once-improbable scenario of Goins as a Terp will finally come to fruition. “I would’ve never thought I could be playing for Maryland a few years ago when I first started playing basketball,” Goins said. “I wasn’t forced into [playing] -- I always liked basketball, but never actually played. But then I started loving to play and got a scholarship offer from Maryland. ... So I’m just enjoying it and taking everything in.” Here’s an introduction to Goins. As the Duke men's Lacrosse team enjoyed a fantastic 2008 season with an 18-2 record and an appearance in the national semifinals, local product Jason Orlando was along for the ride. Orlando, former high school Under-Armour All-American and member of the Lincoln-Sudbury class of 2007, was one of 13 defenseman on the Blue Devils roster, four of them freshmen. He appeared in six games in the spring. ``It was a really good first year, a lot of time put in but definitely enjoyable,'' said Orlando, a defender who also saw time as a long-stick midfielder. ``It was a good experience for the first year.'' With all the competition at his position, seeing the field was difficult from the start of fall ball. Orlando said his most memorable appearance came during a 21-10 win over Ohio State during the NCAA Division 1 quarterfinals. ``All of a sudden I heard coach call me name, and that was really cool,'' said Orlando, who played long-pole midfield against the Buckeyes, but seemed pretty confident he'd be more of a close defender in the future. ``I was running in and out of the field as a long stick and it was really cool to play in a big game with a lot of people there.'' Regarding future playing time, Orlando took a hopeful view in regards for the upcoming season and beyond, noting that several defenders return for the Blue Devils. ``I think its just going to take some time to keep learning the system and to put in the work before I get more of a ...

February in the Northeast is filled with snow, valentines, and vacation for several students. For Jess Crane and the women’s Lacrosse team at Gettysburg, there’s also double sessions ¾ nearly a month of them. “We wake up at 5:30 for practice, then go to classes, then have another three-hour practice in the afternoon,” said Crane, who will be a junior this fall. “We do that for a month without playing a game. It’s a bit different than L-S.” But while the hours, duration, and frequency of practices have all increased at the collegiate level, Crane, a former L-S captain and Dual County League All-Star, has once again stepped up to the task. In 2008, Crane finished the season with 42 points, starting 11 of 19 games at the midfield position as the Bullets finished 17-4 for the second consecutive year. Gettysburg also qualified for the NCAA tournament, losing 14-5 in the opening round to Middlebury, a team that the Bullets defeated earlier in the year. The path to collegiate success in Lacrosse began in seventh grade for Crane, who at that point was new to the sport in the Sudbury town leagues. A solid basketball player ¾ Crane is listed at 5-9 on the Gettysburg roster ¾ she played four years of both sports at L-S. “I never really got in the full swing of things until junior year with the varsity teams for basketball and Lacrosse,” said Crane. “I was on the JV team before the varsity. But I really liked Deb (DeJesus, L-S girl’s Lacrosse c ...

Hard-work, determination and persistence paid off for former Lincoln-Sudbury athletic standout Ashley Milley. After splitting time as the University of New Hampshire's women's Lacrosse goaltender during her freshman, sophomore and junior seasons, Milley emerged as one of the nation's top goalies during her senior campaign, by recording a miniscule 7.92 goals against average, (8th lowest in the nation) and by tallying a .483 save percentage. (16th best in the nation) She also recorded 142 saves over the span of 19 games. While Milley's individual success is evident just by browsing through the stat sheets, it should also be noted that her ability to stop her opponents from scoring translated into wins for UNH. The team enjoyed one of its most successful seasons in school history in 2008, as it recorded 13 wins, good enough to qualify for the NCAA tournament. Behind Milley's goalkeeping, UNH had an impressive performance in the NCAA tournament, as the Wildcats made it all the way to the conference championship before they were ousted by Boston University. ``We really had a great season,'' said Milley, when asked to reflect on her team's accomplishments. ``Everyone had a lot of fun and it was great to be a part of it.'' Milley's remarkable season earned her a number of accolades and awards, as she was named women's Lacrosse defensive player of the week twice in consecutive weeks in the conference.
