TrueHoop reader Ian spotted a recent online ad promoting Seattle Sonics jerseys for sale at the NBA store. I bet they built this ad campaign months ago and failed to update it. But I see that you could also interpret it as trying to squeeze one last little bit of profit out of Seattlites. (And the NBA store does still have a Sonics section .) Ian writes: "Did you ever see the Sopranos episode where Tony removes the copper pipes from townhouses he destroyed in a housing scam, in order to get an extra $200-$300? I'm reminded of that." Vinny Del Negro and Joakim Noah happened to be in the same restaurant, and the first-year coach, according to Noah, picked up the tab. Classy. The two have spent time together several times. Then, fast forward a few weeks, and Del Negro has said publicly that he was not pleased with Noah's performance in Summer League . But everyone is OK with it, because there is goodwill built up there. That kind of stuff is important, I think. Also, here's Eric Musselman on building trust with players . The Houston Chronicle's Fran Blinebury quotes some Joey Dorsey vs. Yao Ming trash talk : "'I blocked (Yao's) shot a couple of times today. He dunked on Mike Harris. I ain't got dunked on yet, so I'm good.' When told of Dorsey's crowing, Yao grinned broadly. 'That's OK, it's practice,' he said. 'When the season starts, he won't be playing.'" K.C. Johnson of the Chicago Tribune: "After missing four practices and signing a one-year tender offer for $6.4 million, Ben Gordon joined his teammates on the Berto Center practice floor Thursday morning. Perhaps the most surprising twist to this saga came late Wednesday, when Raymond Brothers, Gordon's agent, said in a phone interview that he'd be willing to negotiate again with the Bulls next Summer when Gordon is an unrestricted free agent. This despite failing to reach terms on an extension for two straight summers. 'Ben is excited to be with the Bulls again this season and is looking forward to being the best teammate he can be,' said Raymond Brothers, Gordon's agent. 'And he will keep the window open to negotiate with the Bulls next Summer.'" Eddie Sefko of The Dallas Morning News: "Avery Johnson has made the decision to stay quiet for now. That's smart. Nothing he can say will help the situation at this point, other than perhaps poking barbs at the Mavericks and Rick Carlisle. But if Avery did want to air his thoughts, I'd bet it would go something like this: So I'm to blame for getting the Mavericks to the NBA Finals for the only time in franchise history? So I'm to blame for coaching Dirk Nowitzki while he wins the only MVP award in franchise history? So I'm to blame for stifling the offense, when we had a defense that rose into the top 10 in the League? OK, I can deal with that." A. Sherrod Blakely of Booth Newspapers: ... Don't be fooled by Phil Jackson's tan and relaxed demeanor. He's still upset about missing out on another NBA title last Summer. "There's still a little angst and anger there," the Los Angeles Lakers' coach told reporters Friday at the team's practice facility. The Lakers lost the NBA Finals to the Boston Celtics in six games in June, costing the Hall of Fame coach a chance at his League-record 10th coaching title. ... DRAFT PICK: Kevin Love, F, 6-9, UCLA. Uniquely-skilled big man was the best center at the NBA Summer League and his play there earned him an invitation to practice against the U.S. Olympic team the next week there. In the AKRON BEACON JOURNAL, Brian Windhorst writes "the Cavaliers might be close to adding another piece to their roster. Looking for depth and experience on their front line, a League source said, the team is near a deal with veteran big man Lorenzen Wright. A contract could be completed in the next few days. The Cavs talked to him last Summer before he signed with the Hawks and later was traded. The 6-foot-11 veteran of 12 NBA seasons can play forward or center and has been a solid rebounder during his career. His career averages are 8.1 points and 6.5 rebounds per game. If a contract is completed, Wright would be an insurance policy for the Cavs, who have been down a big man since trading Joe Smith in a package for point guard Mo Williams last month. ... Brook Lopez loves answering questions. Or maybe he just can't stop himself from giving interesting answers. That inherent ability toward engaging storytelling resulted in undertaking a creative writing major at Stanford, a degree he plans on finishing. But it's his on-court talent that made Lopez a lottery pick. Likely to start the season manning the middle for the New Jersey Nets, the center averaged 19.3 points and 7.5 rebounds in 25 games for the Cardinal during his sophomore season. And when he faced his first NBA-level competition at the Orlando Summer League, his scoring output improved in each of five games (from 10 in the first to 25 by the last). We had the chance to speak to Brook after one of this month's voluntary workouts. It's time to Know a Net! ...

Apparently, Josh Howard's latest brush with controversy won't cost him cash. More importantly, it won't cost him any games. An official from the NBA said the League is not likely to take any action against Howard for showing disrespect to The Star Spangled Banner. The spokesman cited previous incidents involving Charlie Ward and Allen Iverson, who both made controversial statements and received no repercussions. When you think about it, that's probably the prudent move by the League. When you start legislating against freedom of speech, you're treading on ground that is almost certain to bring up a legal discussion. Besides, the League could have plenty of other reasons to dip into Howard's bank account with his Summer street racing and last season's admission of marijuana use. ... St. Francis - The Bucks have added two players to their roster, and both took part in the single workout scheduled today. Forward Matt Freije, the former Vanderbilt star who played for the Bucks Summer League team, was signed on Wednesday and was in practice for the second straight day. Former UCLA forward T.J. Cummings, who had been waiting for some paperwork to be finished so he could sign a contract, was able to participate in camp for the first time today. The 6-foot-9 Cummings played in the Korean Basketball League last season, and prior to that spent time with the Albuquerque Thunderbirds and Los Angeles D-Fenders of the NBA Development League. Cummings is the son of former Bucks star Terry Cummings, who played in Milwaukee from 1984-'89 and in 1995-'96. "T.J. is a good player," Bucks coach Scott Skiles said. "He's athletic; he's a good runner of the floor. I was on the (Bucks) team with his dad; I have a lot of respect for his dad. "In the two days he couldn't go, because there was a problem with FIBA, he worked very hard on the side. You couldn't really tell today that he missed two days." Cummings played in 118 games in four years at UCLA and was an honorable mention all-Pacific 10 player as a senior in 2003-'04, when he averaged 12.8 points and a team-leading 6.7 rebounds. The Bucks' camp roster now stands at 19 players, including veteran Damon Jones, who will not report by mutual agreement. Also in camp are 6-2 guard K ... Source: blogs.jsonline.com --- 6 days ago
Second-year pro Ramon Sessions is expected to start at point guard in the Bucks' opening exhibition game tonight against the Minnesota Timberwolves at the Bradley Center. Luke Ridnour, projected as the Bucks' starting point guard, was ruled out of tonight's game due to knee tendinitis, according to coach Scott Skiles. Veteran point guard Tyronn Lue, signed by the Bucks during the off-season, also was out with a groin injury. "We didn't see any reason to push it," Skiles said of Ridnour's injury. Forward Joe Alexander also was ruled out due to an abdominal strain that has kept him out of contact work in training camp. "If Lue can't go, then Ramon may play more tonight," Skiles said. "That doesn't hurt at all, for Ramon to get minutes in a game like this. He's been very good in camp. As a matter of fact, the rookie League (Summer League in Las Vegas) and the big camp here, he's gotten better. "He needs all the NBA minutes he can get." Sessions had a chance to make an impression at the end of last season, and he made a good one. After playing 24 games with Tulsa in the NBA Development League, the former Nevada guard played in 17 games with the Bucks, including seven starts. He averaged 8.1 points and 7.5 assists. He also had a few big moments - a buzzer-beating shot to stun the Washington Wizards on April 2 and a franchise-record 24 assists against the Chicago Bulls on April 14. "He's got good quickness," Skiles said. "He plays very ... Source: www.yardbarker.com --- 7 days ago
The "New York Times" reported Sunday that NBA Commissioner David Stern has endorsed the first high profile player in the USA to go from high school to playing in the Euro-League. Stern interviewed by the paper on the subject of Brandon Jennings seemed totally supportive of the player's decision. Jennings had earlier signed a letter of intent to play for the University of Arizona. However he was not sure if he would have the academic requirements to attend the school. Instead he signed a three year contract with Italian power house Lottomatica Virtus Roma during the Summer. Original Story: http://www.lebasketbawl.com/2008/10/ster... . ... Greg Oden announced his delayed arrival to the NBA with a dunk two minutes into the preseason. Oden debuted to a standing ovation, as did the rest of the young Portland Trail Blazers, in a 110-81 exhibition victory over the Sacramento Kings on Tuesday night. Oden finished with 13 points in just under 20 minutes. Oden was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2007 draft, but his rookie season was postponed when he needed microfracture on his right knee. He was held out all of last season. One young fan held a sign that read: "Welcome to the show No. 52." Except for two Summer League games after he was drafted, Oden hasn't played much since he averaged 15.7 points and 9.6 rebounds in his lone season at Ohio State. He led the Buckeyes to the national championship game, scoring 25 points and grabbing 12 rebounds in the loss to Florida. ... Source: sports.aol.com --- 10 days ago
Filed under: Rockets , Western , NBA Videos I can't really pinpoint what it is about this video that I found so entertaining -- like Shoals , I'm just surprised at the guy's charisma and ease in front of a camera. Sure, we expect as much from veterans, but it's not something that's necessarily innate ( self-link alert! ) with incoming rookies. Random segue: after seeing Dorsey first-hand at the Summer League in Las Vegas, I just wanted to add that the guy is an absolute house. You can see it a little on TV, but it doesn't do him justice: he not only dwarfs reporters but also his fellow players. I'm not kidding, his shoulders make Dwight Howard blush.
