On Monday, I linked to a post about how little respect the WNBA Finals were getting . In one paper, the tiny mention of their Finals was shoehorned next to ads for massages and nude women. (That blog lost the moral high ground, perhaps, when it later called for WNBA games to be played in skin-tight outfits for the amusement of lusty fans.) I lost the moral high ground, however, when the WNBA Finals came and went, and I did not write one lousy word them. I have nothing against the WNBA, and have thoroughly enjoyed watching many games in the past. I have profiled several WNBA players for magazines, and have even been to their All-Star Game. But the stark truth is that this year I didn't watch any WNBA, and knew next to nothing about it. Making fun of some paper for dissing the WNBA, while effectively dissing the WNBA ? TrueHoop reader Sarah stepped up to the plate and sent me the e-mail I knew I'd get, telling me that I really ought to have covered the WNBA Finals at least a little. She was nice enough to agree to my request to write up the top ten reasons why we are idiots for not watching WNBA games. She writes: 10 Reasons that NBA fans are dumb for not caring about the WNBA (and this year's Finals in particular) 1. Detroit managed to almost completely shut down San Antonio team that hadn't lost to an eastern conference team all season (and pre-season) long . This has not even come close to happening in the NBA. I don't care abou ...

After the roller coaster ride that was the 2007-08 NBA season, we're back to square one. Thirty teams with a fresh slate that all have their eyes on one prize: an NBA title. Last season, we saw that a team can transform from a bottom feeder to a contender in just one offseason, (the Celtics) or in less time if the right moves are made before the trade deadline (the Lakers). We saw a historic rivalry regain form. Out West, we witnessed one of the most competitive conferences in the history of the Game. We saw Superman soar past his competition in the dunk contest and Chris Paul make the transition from great to unstoppable. We saw Kobe Bryant finally, and I mean finally , take home the Most Valuable Player award after demanding a trade earlier in the season. We saw Kevin Garnett reject a trade to Boston, weeks later approve the deal, and then end up winning his first ever ring. What stories will unfold during this upcoming NBA season? What team will surprise everyone and win a considerable amount of games? Without further ado, here are the Preseason Power Rankings for the 2008-09 NBA season. 1. Boston Celtics — You can't look past the world champions. While the Lakers have the potential to steal this spot pretty quickly with the return of Andrew Bynum, I have to go with the sure thing for now, and that is Boston. 2. Los Angeles Lakers — Kobe, Pau, Lamar, and Andrew. The Lakers went to the Finals and did fairly well without all of ...

The Celtics announced Monday that they have officially re-signed point guard Sam Cassell. The team did not disclose terms of the deal. Cassell was present during the team's Media Day this afternoon in Waltham, wearing his No. 28 jersey. He greeted coach Doc Rivers with a huge hug when he arrived at the Celtics practice facility. "It's going to take a lot to drag Sam Cassell away from the NBA," Rivers told reporters. Cassell is a veteran of 15 NBA seasons. He averaged 7.6 points and 2.1 assists in 17 regular season games with the Celtics last season. Brought in as a veteran backup to Rajon Rondo, Cassell played his way out of Rivers' rotation during the playoffs. He played in just four games during the conference Finals against Detroit and five games against the Lakers, averaging around 10 minutes per Game. Cassell averaged 4.5 points per Game during the playoffs, shooting 33 percent from the field and 21 percent from the three-point line. "Sam hasn't relied on his speed for a long time," said Rivers. "He's old. But he's such a smart player that he can still be effective despite losing some athleticism." Cassel has said that he would like to play one more season in Boston before joining the Celtics as an assistant coach. ...

The Knicks are no longer dressed for failure. Isiah Thomas is out and so too is the dress code that the former Knicks president and head coach instituted when he replaced Scott Layden. Under Thomas’ watch the players were required to wear a suit and tie to every Game. If nothing else, the Knicks at least looked professional. (It wasn’t a bad rule except it was silly for the players to wear a jacket and tie when they had to fly cross country. Even the coaching staff was required to wear the same shirts for practice.) Anyway, sneakers and jeans are now back in style. Zach Randolph wore a polo shirt, blue jeans and green sneakers following Wednesday’s Game in Toronto. Stephon Marbury, the last to dress and leave the locker room (some things never change), wore black leather boots, jeans and a leather jacket. He looked very European in a Cristiano Ronaldo kind of way. *** Paul is a wacky Knicks fan, the kind of guy who during the NBA Finals between Boston and the Lakers wanted to talk to me about Wilson Chandler having a breakout year under Mike D’Antoni. Paul was at it again during Wednesday’s preseason Game, e-mailing me in the second quarter to “Keep Zach.” His point was that Randolph will score and rebound like never before under D’Antoni’s system which will only help his trade value. A few hours later, D’Antoni was raving about how well Randolph and David Lee played together. I think Paul must be talking to Donnie Walsh because ...

NBA training camps have begun; the season is rapidly approaching. Can you dig it? I knew that you could. And so we continue our previews: 30 of them in 30 days. Up next is a team that you will be sick of hearing about by the end of the season (assuming you aren't already): The Los Angeles Lakers. When last we saw them: Finished 57-25, first in the Pacific Division and numero uno overall in the West. Made it all the way to the NBA Finals, where they were eliminated by the Boston Celtics in the league's first ever "six Game sweep" (oh no, that's not going to motivate them at all...). They're heeeeeeeere: Dwayne Mitchell, Josh Powell, Sun Yue They're NOT heeeeeeeere: Ira Newble, Ronny Turiaf The Good: There was very little turnover from a team that went to the NBA Finals. Kobe should still be in MVP form. Andrew Bynum is back to add muscle, rebounding, shot-blocking and those nifty little jump hooks. Thanks to Bynum's return, Grand Theft Gasol should get to spend significant time at PF instead of C, which better suits his marshmallowy goodness skill set. Derek Fisher oozes veteran leadership and, of course, hustle: Fish lead the league in drawing offensive fouls last season (54). Lamar Odom can do a little bit of everything and now gets to operate under the Kobe/Gasol/Bynum three-way safety umbrella (which is good, since Lamar tends to wilt under the bright lights). They're motivated after last season's Finals Fail . (Said coach Phi ...

Filed under: Eastern , Western , NBA Fans I love the NBA. I love the regular season, I definitely love the playoffs and I even love the summer league . But I hate the preseason. Why? First and foremost, the NBA makes it nearly impossible to watch a Game. I'm a Pistons fan, and even though they were one of the last four teams standing last year, the four months from the end of the conference Finals to the start of the preseason felt like an eternity. So when the Pistons took the court for their first preseason Game last week, I was understandably geeked ... until I realized it wasn't even televised, at least not in the Detroit market. Sadly, that's actually a common occurence for preseason games -- of the eight games on Detroit's slate, only three will be televised in metro Detroit. I'm baffled by the decision -- the best I can gather is that TV execs are worried about ratings what with the MLB playoffs, the NFL and college football, the NHL and cars with lots of advertisments driving in circles competing for the average sports fan's attention. But still, there are a lot of fans who only have eyes for the NBA, and denying them a chance to watch not one, not two, but a full 60% of the preseason? It just doesn't make sense. Certainly there's at least one station willing to show the Game, right? And if there's not, why not just put it online? In fact, that might actually be preferable since it'd kill two birds with one stone: appeasi ...

Los Angeles Lakers coach Phil Jackson was at practice Wednesday, a day after missing the team's preseason opener because of soreness and swelling in his lower legs. Team spokesman John Black said Jackson felt better, although he hadn't decided whether he would travel to Fresno for Thursday night's Game against the Los Angeles Clippers and probably wouldn't make a decision until Thursday morning. Assistant coach Kurt Rambis ran the Lakers in a 99-90 loss to Utah team in place of the 63-year-old Jackson, who remained home and watched the Game with his legs elevated. Jackson has been experiencing discomfort for the past few days and was examined Monday by a team doctor. Jackson, tied with fellow Hall of Famer Red Auerbach with nine NBA coaching titles, has undergone two hip replacement operations since October 2006 - the second one in June 2007. He used a cane for four months, including the preseason last year. Last June, Jackson coached the Lakers within two victories of the franchise's 15th championship before they lost to the Boston Celtics in the NBA Finals. ...

OC Register : EL SEGUNDO — He stood there Monday, a prince who had become king, and decreed: “I am happy. There’s a lot to be happy about, a lot to be thankful about.” Kobe Bryant rules like never before – with an improbably high approval rating and the outright confidence that his team should win the NBA championship this season. “We’ve got all the tools here,” Bryant said. “We’ve got all the pieces of the puzzle. Now it’s on us to do the work. If we do the work, we should win it.” That work began officially Tuesday with the first Lakers practice of the season, but with Bryant planning to tap only selectively into the disappointment of falling short in the NBA Finals last season: “Use it whenever you need it,” he said. “I feel great,” he said. “I feel fantastic.” He loves to tell the story about how he busted out an eye-popping windmill dunk in the layup line before one Olympic Game when Team USA was goofing around – and he found himself immediately after that Game chosen to pee into a cup with an Olympic official peeking over his shoulder. Bryant quietly believes his fanatical training and body maintenance have him way ahead of the Game in extending his career, that crooked right pinkie finger and the chronic tendinitis in the knees notwithstanding. How does his song go? It’s Jay-Z’s, and this is what it says: “30’s the new 20. … I’m so hot still.” Bryant said then that he was glad Jay-Z had come out with the “30 Something” song ...

Rodney Stuckey took a photo during the media day for the Detroit Pistons last month wearing a basketball uniform and a pair of red-and-white boxing gloves. It was fitting. The second-year guard needs to deliver a knockout performance this season if the Pistons are going to finally return to the NBA Finals. Stuckey, who emerged as a clutch performer in last year’s playoffs, is the most important piece to Detroit’s hopes for a seventh consecutive trip to the Eastern Conference Finals. With all of the talk going on about Randolph versus Hill with a side of Batum I thought it was a good time to re-iterate an old lesson that we’ve talked about before, but not for a while.   Quick, what makes a good NBA player?   Obviously talent is the base, and that talent can take many forms.   However, as long as some kind of talent is there, it’s not necessarily the determining factor in whether (and how much) you get to play in this league.   Scoring 20 points in a Game is cool, but not in itself that impressive.   Probably 350 of the 450-odd NBA players should be able to score 20 points once in a blue moon, given the chance.   It’s not a good defensive showing or a Sportscenter highlight either.   What makes you a player in this league is simple:   consistency.   Your spikes make the news, but your baseline gets you off the pines and between the lines.   Unless you get pretty lucky with your timing (as with the late, great Herm Gilliam in the ’77 Conference Finals) it’s unlikely that your Big Spike is going to coincide with the team’s Important Moment.   Witness all of these guys pulling out impressive games during the pre-season.   It shows that the potential is there, but potential unrealized doesn’t add up to anything but regrets and frustration.   In those Important Moments (and in some ways every regular season Game becomes one) coaches are going to go with guys on whom they can rely.   Now that Isiah Thomas has been r ...

by Jake Appleman Basketball is a Game of flow and movement. It’s a strange combination of dance and science. Point guards, especially good point guards, lead this dance/science, creating the initial actions that often dictate long sequences of play, and the corresponding reactions. Tony Parker is one of these good—very, very good, in fact—point guards. He might not have the savvy of Nash, the slobbering-at-the-feet-of-his-Game-like-he’s-a-basketball-Buddha respect of Kidd, the bull doggedness of D-Will, or the explosive omnipotence of CP3, but he’s right there with those guys at the top of the point guard class, and he’s gotten better grades in winning than any of them. Despite the fact that his digits would indicate that he took his 3-ball—along with the judiciousness that comes with taking said 3’s—and broke it, it’s a relatively small sample size, so we won’t really dwell. What we will dwell on is that in Game 3 of the Conference Semis, with his team staring down a 0-2 hole, he dropped 31 and 11, putting a damper on CP3 and his team’s Honeybuzz. That win began the 4 out of 5 resurgence that would be the highlight of his squad’s season, approximately a year after TP was named Finals MVP. Parker, and the blistering speed that is part and parcel of his penetration’s dominance, is a vital cog in the NBA’s most consistently well-oiled machine. That’s not to be taken lightly. His ability to put the ball in the basket at a 50 percent ...

With Darko and Darrell back in the mix, the Grizzlies will look to collect their first win of the preseason Friday night against the Charlotte Bobcats.  Memphis lost both ends of their preseason opening back-to-back against the Houston Rockets and Washington Wizards, and are hoping bounce back against the Bobcats.  The Bobcats lost their only Game of the preseason thus far to the Orlando Magic 118-80 in Orlando on Wednesday night.  As two up-and coming teams in the NBA, the contest might not preview the NBA Finals in June, but should provide an entertaining mix of athleticism and potential.  Five things to watch If you like talented, on the cusp young point guards, then this Game is for you:  Mike Conley, Kyle Lowry and Javaris Crittenton on the Grizzlies side.  Raymond Felton and D.J. Augustín on the Bobcats side.  Both the Grizzlies and the Bobcats young point guards will be battling amongst themselves for playing time and against each other in the matchup.  It’s a close call as to who is the most talented out of the group, but smart money says that its Conley if only because he was drafted the highest amongst the point guards (with the fourth overall pick by the Grizzlies in the first round of the 2007 draft).  Who will make the biggest impact in the league remains to be seen. Brown is Back in Town:  Larry Brown is making a home-coming of sorts by joining the Bobcats this year as Brown played collegiately at the University of ...

The 2007-08 NBA season was one of redemption for the Boston Celtics and GM Danny Ainge, culminating in their historic seventeenth championship. The league's best team wire to wire ended the regular season with 66 wins suffocating opposing teams with ballhawking team defense. Led by Head Coach Doc Rivers, Defensive Player of the Year PF Kevin Garnett, new assistant coach/defensive guru Tom Thibodeau, and an unselfish cast of players both veteran as well as rookies, the Celtics proved yet again that defense wins championships in a dominating 131-92 Game Six win over the offensive-minded Lake Show led by reigning MVP Kobe Bryant. With the Big Three of Garnett, Finals MVP SF Paul Pierce, and SG Ray Allen back again, can the Celtics become the first team to repeat as champions since the Kobe-Shaq Lakers (2000-2002) earlier in the decade?   FRONTCOURT KG's impact on the team was immediate. Aside from the 18.8 PPG and 9.2 RPG, he brought a level of intensity the C's were sorely lacking since the Original Big Three. Chosen to the All-Defensive first team eight times, Garnett anchored the league's second best scoring defense with plenty of help from his frontcourt mates. Fifth-year C Kendrick Perkins came into his own and became a physical presence in the paint, allowing KG to roam and help teammates while Perk manned down the middle leading the team with 1.46 blocks per Game.  Pierce, soon to be team leader in every offensive category in ...

Philadelphia 76ers President and General Manager Ed Stefanski announced today that 13-year NBA veteran Aaron McKie has rejoined the franchise as an assistant coach on Maurice Cheeks’ staff. McKie will also have additional duties in player development. McKie was originally named a member of the Sixers coaching staff back on Oct. 3, 2007. Since he never officially retired as a player, his rights still belonged to the Los Angeles Lakers. The Lakers signed McKie to a contract in order to package him in a trade with the Memphis Grizzlies for Pau Gasol on Feb. 1, 2008. Although he did not appear in a Game, McKie spent the remainder of the season on the Grizzlies roster before being waived on May 9, 2008. In 793 career games with 287 starts, McKie averaged 7.4 points, 3.3 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 1.15 steals in 24.2 minutes per Game. He enjoyed his best season as a Sixer in 2000-01, taking home Sixth Man of the Year honors while helping Philadelphia reach the NBA Finals. That same season, he recorded back-to-back triple-doubles at Sacramento on Dec. 30, 2000 (19 points, 14 assists, 10 rebounds) and vs. Atlanta on Jan. 3, 2001 (11 points, 10 rebounds, 10 assists). McKie, who had his jersey retired at Simon Gratz High School in 2002, also starred at Temple University . He finished his three-year career with the Owls tied for sixth on the school’s all-time scoring list and was named Atlantic 10 Conference Player of the Year as a junior in ...
