Hi on this Tuesday, May 6, 2008. I'm Rebecca Field in for Kristin Volk with today's top news update. The Death Toll has jumped again from that catastrophic Cyclone in Myanmar. A local government radio station reports more than 22,000 people are dead and 41,000 are still missing after the storm hit over the weekend. The U.N. is reportedly estimating a million people could be left homeless from the destruction. Relief organizations have started to arrive in the area providing food and other supplies. Meanwhile President Bush and first Lady Laura Bush are offering U.S. aid to Myanmar. The President called on the military government earlier today to allow the U.S. to come in and help. His wife made a similar plea yesterday, asking officials to let in the disaster response team to assess the situation. Bush says the U.S. has already given some aid, but wants to do much more. Voters in Indiana and North Carolina are heading to the polls today…a day that could be the final straw in the battle between Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama. 187 delegates are up for grabs today and the New York senator would need to take 70 percent of them to match up with the Obama. Clinton recognizes the importance of today's primaries…she called the election a game changer. Oil prices have hit another record high today. Oil futures reached more than 121 dollars a barrel…reportedly because of worries about a weak U.S. dollar and limited supply. The dollar w ... Source: mathaba.net --- 13 days ago

Local media reports nearly 4,000 are dead and another 3,000 people are still missing after the 10 hour long deadly storm hit. Government officials say the count could reach 10,000. Relief organizations like the Red Cross are preparing to send aid. The government from neighboring Thailand is also reportedly sending over aid supplies...at the request of Myanmar's leaders. The United Nations Secretary-General ban Ki-Moon says the UN will provide assistance as needed. Animal rights groups are all fired up after the Kentucky Derby race went sour over the weekend. PETA is requesting jockey Gabriel Saez be suspended after his horse Eight Belles broke both her front ankles during the race. The animal had to be euthanized following their second place finish. The group says the horse was injured before the finish, and is asking for an investigation to find out if the jockey was aware of that. If found at fault, PETA wants to second place prize of $400,000 to be taken away. Early trading numbers show investors are dropping Yahoo shares. Myanmar urgently needs diesel fuel to run the rice-tilling machines that are replacing water buffalo killed by Cyclone Nargis in the Irrawaddy delta, a senior U.N. official said Friday. The call by U.N. Undersecretary-General Noeleen Heyzer, head of the world body's headquarters for Asia, came as Myanmar's state-controlled press said that aid from the United States could not be trusted. Tens of millions of dollars have been donated to help Myanmar's Cyclone victims, but the ruling military junta has been reluctant to accept foreign relief experts in large numbers and restricted their access to the hard-hit delta. The U.N. estimates more than 1 million survivors, mostly in the delta, still need help more than five weeks after the Cyclone struck. The government's official Death Toll is above 78,000 and an additional 56,000 people are missing. Heyzer called for Myanmar's Southeast Asian neighbors, foreign aid donors and traditional oil suppliers to assist the country by supplying it with 1 million gallons of diesel fuel. ... Myanmar's ruling junta has announced that 84,500 people perished in Cyclone Nargis in May, up from an earlier confirmed Toll of 77,700. Deputy Foreign Minister Kyaw Thu told reporters Tuesday that the official Death Toll stood at 84,537 and 53,836 still missing. Cyclone Nargis on May 2-3 cut a swath of destruction through the Irrawaddy river delta and in and around the country's largest city, Yangon. A major international effort is under way to aid some 2.4 million survivors of the natural disaster, the worst in Myanmar's modern history. Tuesday's update was the first since May 17, when officials said 77,738 had died and 55,917 were missing. ... Source: www.mlive.com --- 31 days ago
