"I can't talk now, I think I'm in danger," a reporter in Myanmar whispered into the phone. Click. Phones are tapped and the few foreign journalists inside Myanmar are operating in secret, making it dangerous and difficult to tell the story of the cyclone that has devastated the Southeast Asian country. Covering catastrophes always carries risk in impoverished countries where disasters can cause shortages of food, clean water, outbreaks of disease and staggering death tolls. But the challenges are multiplied in Myanmar, formerly known as Burma, where the reclusive and notoriously brutal military regime does not want details of the suffering to leak out. ... YANGON, Myanmar — A U.S. plane ferried relief to Myanmar for the first time Monday to help nearly 2 million cyclone victims facing disease and starvation, but the U.N. chief criticized the military junta for its “unacceptably slow response.” Even as the death toll climbed, Myanmar’s authoritarian regime continued to bar nearly all foreigners experienced in managing humanitarian crises from reaching survivors of Cyclone Nargis. With hundreds of thousands of homes destroyed in the disaster zone, refugees packed into Buddhist monasteries or camped in the open, drinking dirty water contaminated by dead bodies and animal carcasses. Medicine and food were sorely lacking — even as supplies bottled up at the main international airport. Yangon, Myanmar’s largest city, was pounded by heavy rain Monday, and more downpours were expected throughout the week, further hindering aid deliveries. For many, the rainwater was the only source of clean drinking water. U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon chided the junta for its “unacceptably slow response” in helping victims of the disaster and warned of a deepening crisis. ... ... More aid is on the way to cyclone-ravaged Myanmar - but so is the heavy rain. "There may be cases were neighbors came back and because of the tidal surge, the bodies were dispersed" As the bloated bodies rise and fall with the current, women scrub clothes along the river bank, villagers bathe to cool themselves and a lone child sits on a dock staring aimlessly into the water. But with little aid getting through to desperate cyclone survivors, the dead have largely been forgotten _ left to decay where the brackish waters carried them or waiting to be pulled out to sea by the rising tides. 'The first few we saw, we were all very shocked,' said U Pinyatale, a monk from the area who has prayed for the dead. 'After a while, there were just too many.' Read more ...
