Back in April I wrote about Microsoft's Music Store closing, thus rendering any Music purchased from that Store worthless. Why? The Music is DRM infested, and thus will stop playing after they switch off their servers that are needed for license veri... (more in the full post) ...

Filed under: Desktops , Laptops , Portable Audio In a move which at best could be described as unsurprising, Yahoo! has announced that it's taking its Music Store DRM license key servers offline come September 30th... and freezing customers from ever registering their Music with another computer. Ever. Like a twin-sister rehash of Microsoft's PlaysForSure / MSN Music DRM debacle , this moves ensures that the only way you can take your tracks with you will be the (suggested!) technique of burning the songs to CD then ripping them back to your PC -- thus ensuring the absolute worst possible quality. Normally, we'd expect to see a massive backlash over a move like this, but given the near-insignificant nature of the Yahoo! Music Store, it may not be the firestorm Microsoft got itself into. Regardless of the outcry, this is a terrific reminder of the failure of DRM in general, and a slap in the face to the people who actually went to the trouble of buying their Music in the first place. British satellite megacorp Sky is gunning for Apple, and in a big way. The company says that its as yet "unamed" downlaod service has already signed Universal Music Group (home to Pavarotti and Kanye West), and will be a subscription model. TheTelegraph adds that Universal won't be the only big cat in the room: The new Music download service will be run by a new joint-venture company, in which Sky will be the majority shareholder, and Universal Music will be a shareholder. Sky said that "other key partners", thought to include the other major record labels Sony BMG, Warner and EMI, will be invited to "take a stake" in the new service in the future. The newspaper also reports that the all-you-can-eat site will be distributed in non-DRM MP3s -- definitely getting a thumbs up from us -- but we're guessing that Apple's 70 percent market share in the UK is still going to be a big hurdle to overcome. Digital Rights Management technology is dying, it's becoming understood that hobbling tunes to enforce scarcity isn't the best way to monetize the Music business online. What about all the suckers who bought DRM laden Music in recent years, though? When the Yahoo! Music Store closes its doors this fall, the company announced today, past customers dependent on their Music "phoning home" to get license approval before playing are out of luck. They'll be able to continue playing purchased tracks on a single computer, until they make any changes to their operating system. The rise and fall of the Yahoo! Music Store will make for an interesting story some day, but for now the DRM story is particularly important. Yahoo! now encourages customers to burn their Music files to CDs. That may not be a terribly onerous requirement, but the point is that when you purchased a license for songs, everyone really meant it when they said this might not last forever. As Jon Healey wrote on his LA TImes digital media blog , both Microsoft and Sony have tried to shutter their Music services without providing ongoing support for already purchased material. Both faced a substantial consumer backlash. Sony extended their support through the end of this year and Microsoft did so for 3 more years. Healey suspects that too few people ever bought Music from Yahoo! to create that kind of backlash and doesn't seem to think it's a big deal any way. Given that Y ...

http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/pos...ys-with-it.html "The bad dream of DRM continues. Yahoo e-mailed its Yahoo! Music Store customers yesterday, telling them it will be closing for good—and the company will take its DRM license key servers offline on September 30, 2008. Sure, it's bad news and yet another example of the sheer lobotomized brain-deadness that has characterized Music DRM, but the reaction of most Music fans will be: "Yahoo had an online Music Store?" " I had Yahoo! Music a few years ago and really liked it until my licenses would no longer update, and after 3-4 email exchanges, uinstall/reinstalls, I demanded a partial refund and that was the last time I'd ever deal with DRM like that again. If you have Yahoo! Music, you have about 60 days to burn what you want to CD and re-rip it unprotected so you can listen to what you purchased. And for your Music needs, see Amazon's MP3 Store . Everything there is unlocked. ...
